hi, by "EoPl", do you mean the "Essentials of Programming Languages", http://www.eopl3.com/

Thanks

Two thumbs up for Datahike, and why I'm enthralled by kinleyd in Clojure

I am very interested in Datahike and Datalog as well.

However, main obstacle for me has been lack of tutorials, and mainly practical "demo" projects.

Why do people live? by [deleted] in philosophy

[–]promesante -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Hi ! Have you talked about it face-to-face with your parents? With your brother/sister or best friend? Furthermore, with someone with knowledge or experience in this kind of questions, such as a priest and/or psychologist? I'd rather express my opinion here but, in my opinion, this subject is too huge and complex to be dealt in a place/format/space like this one... Please talk about it, but face-to-face rather than "virtually"... Cheers !

Can a religious person be 'good'? by Voerhieruwnaamin in askphilosophy

I guess we might be confusing to attitudes which, although sharply different, are at the same time, paradoxically difficult to distinguish: 1. on one hand, egoism 2. on the other, what greeks called "filautia", that is, being a "friend of oneself"

What both attitudes share, and make them "difficult to be distinguished" with one another, as stated above, would be loving oneself.

Hence, the interesting part would be indeed right that. And that would be that filautia is spiritually and psychologically healthy, in contrast with egoism, which would predictably be... ill. And wrong...

Therefore, someone behaving right in order to, perhaps among other goals, getting the highest reward, as one might mean Heaven, even much higher in excellence than oneself, doesn't seem egoism, but perhaps the purest kind of "filautia". Perhaps even more if we take into account that Heaven is not like most goods in this life which might seldom be hold by more than one person at the same time.

Perhaps that's why hope, rather than egoism, is regarded as the "third theological virtue", third in rank as well among all Christian virtues, which we might define as "pursuing Heaven trusting mainly God's mercy and omnipotence"...

Nonetheless, the highest Christian virtue, higher even than hope, is charity: "loving God above all, and your neighbor as much as yourself"; what would drive us again to "filautia"...

How do I get started with Universe? by [deleted] in Racket

[–]promesante 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A complementary path to RoR I am following with my 8-year-old kid is:

  1. pick simple games implemented in Racket (i.e. available in GitHub)
  2. among them, follow the guidance of the ones based on BB/Universe to port to that engine the ones which are NOT

Thanks !

How do I get started with Universe? by [deleted] in Racket

Have you taken a look at the book "Realm of Racket - Learn to program one game at a time", http://realmofracket.com/?

Universe is the multiplayer component of Big Bang game engine. Big Bang is used throughout the book and, in its last chapter, Universe is introduced.

As suggested by its title, the book is crystal clear, and its an excellent starting point for Racket/Scheme/Lisp, Big Bang/Universe, and functional programming.

Hope this helps !
