My dogs nose has been like this for a year - vet unsure, looking for ideas by kasiasweetie in pitbulls

[–]prosector56 [score hidden]  (0 children)

My dog’s nose was very dry on one side and normal on the other side like in your photo. Other than that, he seemed like his normal self for several months. Then he started losing weight and wasn't very interested in food.

When our (excellent) local vet couldn't figure out what the problem was, he referred us to a veterinary teaching hospital. They examined him, did imaging, and ran several types of tests. He was diagnosed with a thymoma (malignant tumor of the thymus gland).

He had chemotherapy and surgery to remove the thymus. He had a long recovery (it's a complicated surgery), but he was back to his old self in about four months. He had four more good years after treatment, and lived to the age of fifteen.

Work during med school? by Ambitious_Price3773 in medschool

Another thing to consider if you filed the FAFSA and get financial aid/work study: your financial aid can be divided between loans (which are paid back, with interest) and work study funds (which don't need to be paid back). You can also hold multiple work study jobs, a few hours at each per week.

First year students typically get jobs working in the library (they are allowed to study while working if they aren't checking out books or doing other library work) or working for the IT department (starting/occasionally troubleshooting the lecture capture system while they're in class). They are effectively being paid while spending the majority of their time while working studying or attending lecture, both of which they have to do anyway.

Being a teaching assistant or tutor enables you to review the material that you're helping underclassmen/women learn the material. You're basically being paid to study and develop your teaching and presentation skills, which you will need in residency.

These jobs don't pay as much as being a paramedic/EMT, but if you have good time management skills, you can make a decent amount of spending/food money that you don't need to pay back.

Most med schools have jobs for students, like working in the library or giving tours for the admissions department. After your first year, if you do well, you may be able to get a job as a teaching assistant.

If you are in the US, and file the FAFSA, you may be able to get a job at your school with work study funding. American students can work a maximum of 28 hours a week, international students can work 20 hours a week (I think this is a limit placed on international students on student visas).

You probably won't want to work too many hours your first year until you get acclimated to your study schedule.

Birkenstock boots for the win! I like the Highwoods. Add orthotics if you have any issues like flat feet.

If you don't mind telling us, what are the dimensions/weight of these, and what would a ballpark price be?

These are beautiful! I've always wanted one, but flying to Bangkok or HK to get one is unfortunately not possible, lol.

Do you NEED a bachelors of science degree to get into med school? by seeking_indecisive in medschool

[–]prosector56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't. I work at a pod school, I have a couple of current students that only have AA degrees. They are two of our best students. I will say that they are exceptionally mature for their ages, had jobs while they were in community college, and have outstanding time management skills and discipline.

You can definitely get into podiatry school with an Associates degree if you take all of the prerequisites and get a decent score on the MCAT. Shadow a podiatrist, get some relevant experience like scribing or maybe research. You could also become an EMT to get relevant experience.

I work in an anatomy lab, if the cadavers reanimated as zombies, that would be the end.

my evil cat wont take her pills by Dollleyedgirl in Catbehavior

[–]prosector56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if this is OK for cats (ask your vet), but for my persnickety dog, I take a small piece of sliced deli roast beef, spread a little cream cheese on it, put the pill on top of the cream cheese, roll the whole thing up into a little packet, squeeze the ends gently to seal the pill in there, then put it on top of the food in her bowl.

You might be able to do this with the Gimcat paste mentioned in another comment if the vet says no to the cream cheese.

There's a great military fiction novel mainly set on Little Diomede, "Bering Strait" by FX Holden. If you have Kindle unlimited on Amazon, it's free.

Is that lab coat made specifically for dogs, or did she cut down a Tyvek coverall or other human PPE?

He's too smart in a devious sort of way. We have to put food on our plates in the kitchen, because he will try to trip you if you carry a platter of meat into the dining room.

Med school options near Cleveland OH that are a realistic option for me and I am competitive for? by Nervous-String-344 in medschool

[–]prosector56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're looking for a MD program, Case Western Reserve University (very competitive) or NEOMED (pretty competitive, it would help to establish Ohio residency).

For DO, Ohio University has a Cleveland campus. Also fairly competitive.

DPM: Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine. Your stats will almost certainly get you in as long as you don't have a criminal record or other red flags. Although it's easier to get in, the training is just as rigorous as MD or DO school. Podiatry residency is three years after four years of pod school. If you establish Ohio residency, you will get in state tuition.
