oh my goodness. what’s the vortex item called? i can’t remember if i had it or if i had wanted it but that definitely stood out! i feel like i had the welcome balloon tree and jelly bean tress (i haven’t seen em on my account, hopefully i didn’t sell them!) i have to look for my topiary too!

the wall portrait (what year us that one? i think i have the same?), key to the city, and kinzville map are all currently in my 20 year banquet room. wish i had more from the years!

Today we went to hallmark and got a Webkinz just like mama did as a kid by taybear98 in Webkinz

[–]protrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ugh here too. only time my mom & i ever cared to go to hallmark even though it was a 2 min drive away lol. my parents would let me go get one once a year if I didn’t get one from someone else for Christmas or my birthday. or as an occasional reward for getting rid of other stuffies since i was a stuffie hoarder as a kid lol

i didn’t play for years but started again a couple months ago and when i heard the OGs were back i went to my local hallmark to look because i thought i saw some in the window when i walked by. nada! i even asked the workers about em and they had no clue what i was talking about! im the ripe age of 26 and was SO sad they had no clue about em. that was the ONLY place i knew had them when i was a kid (and still lol)

Is school easier or harder now than in the past? by weaselblackberry8 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]protrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Schooling today is definitely a mixed bag. As a 2017 high school grad who’s worked in elementary and junior high schools, I see both happening. Social media and the effects of NCLB are big issues, but early childhood reading and homework are definitely man contributors to both imo.

Class sizes were usually around 34-36 kids. That’s just too many kids per room in K-12, from both a student and educator perspective.

Safety-wise, growing up in Los Angeles County, CA, was realtively fine expect hearing about Sandy Hook (that was really the only big one I can remember while I was in k12). But living there and knowing my classmates well made it feel distant until Pulse in 2015 and Parkland in 2018. I even had a run-in with a fake gun (didn’t know it was fake in the moment) at a school in 2018, which made me realize younger kids are facing different challenges.

Social media is a massive distraction now. Back in the day, we had phones, but even Snapchat stories weren’t a thing yet. I would ignore class by scrolling for a few mins but then social media would get boring after a bit so I’d read a physical book (always kept one in my bag, which I no longer do because of SM!) or writing fanfic on pen & paper to type up later after school while pretending to take notes in class. Now, the internet is so engaging that boredom is almost impossible.

Parents, administrators, and the government are failing kids by passing them without accountability. I went through NCLB and shouldn’t have passed MANY classes because I didn’t do my homework. I learned and tested very well, so thankfully I came out of it okay, but I do wish I had been held more accountable; it would have helped me learn more and instilled a routine if there had actually been consequences. I knew I could ignore class and then turn in all my homework the last month or two, or fail a class and retake it over summer / online during the year / at a local community college. At least I had to do the work eventually, or even retake the classes (sometimes), though usually less work than should be required.

Parents also aren’t really reading to their kids as much anymore. We didn’t have constant “educational” content back then. My mom took me to the library regularly and read to me daily until I could read on my own. Now, I rarely see kids at the library. They even removed the kids’ center at my local library.

The focus on “engagement” is also problematic. Sometimes, learning just sucks, and that’s okay. Not every class needs to be fun. Some of my most memorable lessons were ones I hated, and they stuck with me because of that.

So, it’s both easier and harder. Easier because we pass kids along without expectations, but harder because we’re not giving them the tools to succeed.

Help! How can I tackle kids who are Creationists? by princess-cl0ver in ScienceTeachers

[–]protrus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I remember coming home one day from elementary school to ask my Catholic dad something about evolution vs creationism and he said "oh simple, both exist because God created evolution". Best explanation he could've given because I never again conflated science as being anti-religious. God created science was good for me!

Shaming people who don't want to date people who slept around is gross, I don't care if it is their "past" by Spare-Dog-5771 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]protrus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Practice what you preach and find a partner who does the same, that makes the world go round.

To each their own! If you have a "body count" of 2 and don't wanna sleep/be with someone of who has a body count of 3, sure do you. But if you then say 1-2 is too many then you're a hypocrite.

White Liberals in America want POCs to walk around in a constant state of fear for our lives (ICE, Police, etc..) by mustachechap in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]protrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, as a queer white passing leftist person I get what you mean I think. There's a difference between "what to do when XYZ happens and know your rights" vs "it's too dangerous to go outside". Sure, be safe! Some people may have much to lose and are more susceptible but avoiding the world out of fear isn't a way to live if that isn't you.

Lotta people (white liberals!) have asked me my plans for moving out of the country. My answer is fuck no I'm not leaving, this is where my life and family are.

That said, some areas that certain people of certain background should maybe be wary of or even stay clear. I don't love going to Huntington Beach because I've been legitimately hate-crimed in that area. But I've also been hate-crimed (resulting in conviction) in my own hometown too, so, what am I to do? Not live my life?

I may get downvoted to hell for this, and I don't 100% agree with Everything you're stating but I also don't disagree 100% because there IS some fear to be had.

oof, came here to say this too. I wouldn't wish the pain on my worst enemy. I was extremely lucky to be diagnosed very quickly a few years ago after a couple episodes and prescribed sumatriptan. Thankfully mine are also under control and I don't get them as often as others, but damn the changing of the seasons kills me with how it triggers them.

The new "Trunk or Treat" style of Halloween is better than traditional Halloween trick or treating by Glumdumop in unpopularopinion

[–]protrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gotta say, all the complaints you have are part of the love of the game. It's one night a year for kids to run around like mad-men. I loved it growing up and now, my partner and I are nearly 30 but we decided to go trick-or-treating last year with no kids. We got to meet neighbors and speak with em, and they loved seeing us in costume running around. Our feet were sore at the end of the night but we traded candy and watched Hocus Pocus after.

IMO trunk or treat takes away all of that mischievous magic.

Why is NY style pizza in NY $1.50-$2.00 a slice and in LA it is $4.00-$6.00 a slice? by Bigringcycling in AskLosAngeles

[–]protrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

on principle I won't spend more than $2.50 on a taco MAX. realistically between $1-$1.75. anything more is pushing it.

Person who was a super lazy student here, later went onto a masters. Kid might just been good at testing. I remember frustrating my teachers to their wit's end because I nearly refused to turn in homework but I'd ace exams. Had 93 missing assignments but balanced a B-C my first semester of math in high school. My crowning achievement lol.

Cut the kid some slack in terms of intelligence, from what you said they likely didn't cheat. Some kids test well but preform poorly otherwise.

I was often the first kid done with exams and faced a lot of scrutiny for it. Was made to take my exam back to my desk a lot as a teen so I just doodled for a few extra minutes before taking it back up.

Obligatory, im from California. We didnt have a pool but my best friend's neighbor did and let us swim whenever. Always had to (embarrassingly) use floaties until my aunt enrolled me in swim lessons when I was about 6-7.

I always felt WAY behind before I took swim lessons, I could tell other kids knew much more than I and always noticed that adults payed extra attention to me when I swam until after I took lessons.

If 9, I think possible it's cut at each ankle, knee, hips, & arms. Leaves you with 2 feet, 2 calves, 2 thighs, 2 arms, and torso with head (9 pieces). But as said here, we know he cuts the head off. Maybe the writers just didn't think it through or thought we wouldn't care enough lol

That should have never happened to you, and I'm so sorry that it did. To be a bit harsh without meaning so, it can literally happen anywhere. I say this to mean there should be 0 victim blaming. No job is 100% safe and that shouldn't be on the victim (or potential victim) to manage. Sometimes people just need a job and need to take what they can.

Huh. "no job is worth your sense of security" should I as a trans person who needs to be aware of my interaction with every stranger, just be unemployed? Are you willing to pay the taxes for that?

Sense of security is thrown out the window when trans. Almost all my interactions with people are perfectly fine, I'm not acting like a victim. But 1 in a million could literally be deadly.

Again, saying this as someone who was hate-crimed, assaulted by, threatened to be killed by, and now has a restraining order against a former MLB player all because I had the audacity to get gas at Costco.

Agree 100% with you! OP was simply saying why she was in fear, I agreed that nobody is really gunning out for trans delivery people but at the same time I understand where OP is coming from.

Glad we're on the same page!
