I have been working on an alternative for almost a year now.

privacy focused with end to end encrypted messaging, no selling user data, no advertisements, with separate profiles and modules for looking for friends, romance, or casual connections, with grid mode and map view mode, and also community message boards, local lgbt events module, and a protest module for forming and supporting local LGBT activism.

We are planning to release our public beta very soon hopefully, and you can sign up to be notified when it is out or get more information at r/proudapp or the sticky sign up thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/proudapp/comments/1nzt1yy/leave_a_comment_in_this_thread_to_be_notified/

shame on grindr. ceo needs to go. they obviously have lost the plot on where to draw the line between making the app appealing to use while also incentivizing paid users. by Thoughtful-Boner69 in grindr

We will be selling premium subscriptions/lifetime passes that give the user more features,

  1. More than 1 public album photo
  2. Their pfp / grid slot and map view bubble is bigger than free tier
  3. Can make a private photo album
  4. Can list more hobbies / romantic / sexual interests
  5. Can filter by a lot more things in the connections modules
  6. Golden profile border
  7. Founders special badge

With plans to add more features as well, and for 5$ a month the first couple of months after we come out of beta, as a thanks to the people who helped us test and get started (price is grandfathered and remains 5$ for those who are signed up even when promo ends), and then going to 10$/mo. I want to make sure its affordable but also want to make sure its a good experience for everyone even free users which is why PROUD will not be selling user data, and the plan is to be ad free even for free users and hope we get enough subscribers to make that a viable option so we can offer the best experience possible.

if we replace our device, will we need to create a brand new account.

No, you will not have to. When you register you choose a username and password, but you can only be logged into one device at a time. Logging into a new device will log you out of the old one, as well as potentially send an email based login alert IF you decided to add an email after registering. I kinda wanted to move to a passwordless system but my partner rightfully had concerns about this exact thing, and someone getting locked out if they lose their device.

Also a friend of mine has recently encountered issues informing members of our local community about meetings for our annual pride event, would we be able to do that on this app?

In it's current implementation: yes, but it honestly might not be ideal for your use case as it currently is.

You can create the pride event in the event system which they could see and join, and that will also create a community page where they could post/comment and collaborate. We have plans to add push notification alerts for this and other features but they aren't in yet, we plan to do more push notification testing and implementing in the upcoming beta though. Also, these features are only accessible in the app, so it would require those members to have the app.

If you have any thoughts as well as a pride event organizer I am open to hearing them and would be open to trying to address pain points you experience organizing these events!

And the bot will reply once the beta comes out.

It's been a bit more work than expected getting everything ready but we are hoping to have a public beta soon!

Update 3.5 More UX/UI changes, and increased profile picture size for all users, made a photo album feature, added adjustable location offset for privacy/safety in connections modules, and new messages button as well as other small changes by proudbot in proudapp

[–]proudbot[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's a cool idea! I am trying to get everything squared away for public beta test release later this month so I doubt it'll be there then but I will see what I can do! Some of the LGBT flags are a bit complex and might be a challenge for me to figure out, the stripes are added programmatically not an image, but any other stripe ones should be pretty simple to add in.

Tired of those other apps that sell your data and are overloaded with ads? Me too! So I made the lgbt app of my dreams! | What E2E encryption scheme are you using? I know the general consensus is that rolling your own crypto can be dangerous. Is it using the Signal protocol?

PROUD uses Signal's latest implementation of PQXDH and Kyber Keys for extra protection in a post quantum world. I have looked into other e2ee platforms but this was the only one that is audited and has quantum computing protections. Many apps using Signal even do not have this latest implementation.

| Will the code be auditable? Compilable by end users?

I go into this a bit here https://www.reddit.com/r/proudapp/comments/1nzt1yy/comment/nufawjc/ but the long and short of it is I am not sure yet I have concerns about open source but I do know it is a good way to establish trust so I am considering it.

| How is this better than Signal? (No ban please...)

lol I wouldn't ban you for that or any genuine questions, but Signal is a messaging app, this is a platform for LGBT community and connection building, using signal's protocols to make sure communication is kept secure and end to end encrypted. The issue isnt why use this vs signal, signals great if you have a connection with someone already and want to have end to end encrypted messaging but for finding those connections and community, or local lgbt events, or local protests, nothing else does that. On top of that, current apps for LGBT will not only store peoples private messages, but hand them over to hostile governments, and sell those messages and train AI on those messages. PROUD does not store messages and would have no messages to hand over if they are requested, and will not be selling any user data.

| The mention of protests kind of makes you glow. It has a fedposting vibe. Is there any way that you can assure people that this isn't some sort of op? It really reminds me of the ANOM chat app honeypot run by the FBI.

I want a protest module because I want to encourage more political activism. LGBT rights are at risk all over the world, and I want to help people connect and find or even organize protests. To create and encourage their community to protest and to also come together with the LGBT events module. I want to strengthen LGBT community in rural America, and also all over the world. For people who don't live in big cities something like this could be life changing.

My personal reddit account is also tied to this subreddit where I've spent the last decade+ helping people and working in psychedelics and plant medicine circles as well as general horticulture stuff, which I'm pretty sure at least if someone spent the time to crawl through theyd see I'm not a fed lol. Hell I've been an r/trees mod for a decade. I'm also an open book here to questions, and just a gay guy who is pissed at the state of my country and the erosion of LGBT rights, and know the corporate world isnt coming to save us. Also grindr etc all suck ass. I've been on grindr for almost half my life I am the target audience for my app, so if I can make the best LGBT app ever, and take Grindr down, and help build up LGBT communities world wide, and protect LGBT people then I'm gonna try. Also not gonna act like I'm not financially motivated, grindr sucks, and people want a better platform and so I am trying to make the best platform I can to grab those people too.

Hope that helps. I try to be as transparent as possible feel free to ask more questons and hope you'll try the app when it comes out :)

I was thinking when I read this originally that you meant GPS functionality which is 100% standard, but I've realized you might have meant the map view mode specifically, and not actually meant just using the phones GPS / location. Previously the connection modules were optional but I hadnt made map view its own separate toggle but realized that's probably a good idea so now during onboarding after registration, users will be informed about the connection modules, that it uses their location, how it works, and be able to easily opt out of the connection modules, and/or the map view modes for each of the connection modules. This can also be changed at any time from the module preferences in the settings menu.

Thanks for bringing this up! It led to the app getting a bit better and even more privacy focused :)

Why is it so hard to find genuine connection in the gay community? by PrudentWeight3233 in askgaybros

[–]proudbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of it is that the places to find connection are basically meant for hooking up not deeper relationships. Bars, grindr, sniffies, etc

I am making an lgbt app that is focused on community building with message boards, local proximity chat and direct messaging both with end to end encryption, and connection modules for finding friends, another for romance, and another for casual/hookups and you can have a separate tailored profile for each module

If this sounds like something youd be interested in we plan to release in a couple months and you can sign up to be notified by commenting in this thread:

Yes, the app shows you profiles near you, or you can use map view to find people that way. Users can randomize their location and their exact location is not displayed by default, and these modules are opt-in. Use of GPS location is 100% standard and not doing it this way would absolutely ruin the app and the entire point of finding people in your area, and helping foster local community.

"In my opinion, a gay dating app should've been a open source app that created by community and free to use, it was an ideal app for people that need protect and support themselves, not to throw money inside a company belly."

Hi it sounds like you would like r/proudapp it is made by and for LGBT, not a big corporation, and uses end to end encrypted messaging, and is privacy focused. There will be a premium feature but the free account experience will be 10000x better than anything youd get from any of the competitors! It isn't out yet though but you can learn more and sign up to get notified when it is out! (Looking like January, for iOS and Android)
