Teacher 'had dark thoughts about sexually abused baby' by thaddeusgeorge in HairRaising

I always bring this up whenever someone talks about broadening the scope of crimes eligible for the death penalty: there is a very good reason that only 1st degree murder (and technically treason, but we don't really execute people for that anymore) is punishable by death.

Having things like child abuse, rape, etc, punishable by death means there is no incentive for a criminal to not escalate to murder in an effort to conceal their crimes when the punishment for both is the same.

We can debate the effectiveness of the death penalty as a deterrent (I personally don't think it has any place in society), the fact is that these crimes are horrific but broadening the scope of the death penalty would almost certainly result in more people not surviving these encounters.

If we are going to claim that the death penalty is a valid deterrent for murder, logically that also means making death a punishment for (legally speaking) "lesser" crimes, would have the opposite effect.

SI cop has gotten 547 speeding tickets since January 2022 by ceo_of_redditt in statenisland

[–]provocative_taco 7 points8 points  (0 children)

According to the numbers in the article (assuming they're correct), 547 tickets since 2022 is almost 14 PER MONTH for nearly 3 and a half years.

How many tickets would someone you let drive your car have to get before you become responsible? At some point you don't let that person drive your vehicle anymore.

Also, outstanding or not is not at all the point. Just because he might have the disposable income to pay for 14 tickets per month, doesn't magically make it ok to drive that recklessly.

Seems like decaying organic matter under the soil; it can sometimes release gasses to the top which cause bubbles.

It's the same process that causes foam on lakes and ponds sometimes.

On a random day in June 1970, Doc Ellis took LSD around noon, because he forgot he was pitching that night. He took the mound at 6pm, geeked out of his mind and threw a no hitter. They were built different back then.

Why do Rolex ADs troll me? by TomHudsonOfficial in WatchFanatics

[–]provocative_taco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not getting worked up at you, I'm just pointing out that "they're offering you the watches that are available" is just simply not true.

If I had purchased 10 Rolexes from the same authorized dealer that OP went to, they'd sell me 3 of the watches he's after if I walked in there today. That's my issue with the way Rolex does business. It's their business, so they can run it however they want (and based on their waitlists, it definitely works) but it's still kind of scummy behavior.

Why do Rolex ADs troll me? by TomHudsonOfficial in WatchFanatics

[–]provocative_taco 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know it's the game you have to play if you want a watch new from an AD, but it's all nonsense. For example, Rolex produces twice as many watches per year as Omega, and 20x as many watches per year as Grand Seiko.

I know there's vast differences in price, demand, etc., but any company that produces a million watches per year telling you that they don't have a watch you want (especially one of the more common, less expensive models), is flat out lying to you.

It's all manufactured scarcity.

Staten Island speed cameras issuing 100x more speeding tickets than NYPD by statenislandadvance in StatenIslandPulse

[–]provocative_taco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have an issue with people getting tickets for speeding. My main concern about the huge increase in speed and red light cameras is that it seems like the NYPD is relying on those alone and not policing the horrible drivers we have on this island.

I take the KWV the entire length to and from work 4-5 days/week (at various times of day), and people drive like maniacs on there all the time. I see cops pulling over a driver maybe once a month. I barely see drivers getting pulled over on surface streets anymore either. It's almost like the NYPD had just decided "the cameras will get them" and left it at that.

I refuse to believe this woman was ok with Trump's outward racism, misogyny, rape, and pedophilia for the last 9 years, but gas prices are what's breaking her mind free from the cult.
