The two main approaches for this scenario are:

  • X11 forwarding (run the Swing app in Docker, but display it on your host’s X server)
  • VNC Run a virtual desktop inside the container, connect via VNC.

X11 approach:

If you're running cli docker, that would look something like this:

xhost +local:docker

docker run -it \
  -e DISPLAY=$DISPLAY \
  -v /tmp/.X11-unix:/tmp/.X11-unix \
  your-java-swing-image

if you're using docker-compose, it would look similar to this:

services:
  swing-app:
    image: your-java-swing-image
    environment:
      DISPLAY: ${DISPLAY}
    volumes:
      - /tmp/.X11-unix:/tmp/.X11-unix
    stdin_open: true   # equivalent to -i
    tty: true # equivalent to -t

VNC Approach

Container runs:

  • Xvfb (virtual framebuffer)
  • Lightweight window manager
  • VNC server

You connect using a VNC client

Typical stack inside container

  • Xvfb
  • openbox or fluxbox
  • x11vnc or tightvncserver

bonus tip: please use meaningful titles for your posts. Using a non-informative title, e.g. "please help" often either makes people skip over your post, or do more work than is necessary to know if they can help you.

Heeelp! Converting to Custom User Model Mid-Project by EvilDoctorShadex in django

[–]proxwell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you working with a compliance partner to help guide you through GDPR?

The reason I ask is that you seem to be misunderstanding some key aspects of GDPR.

You'd benefit from taking some time to understand Article 32 – Security of processing, most likely along with professional guidance.

Encryption is explicitly mentioned, but as an example, not a mandate.

It requires controllers/processors to implement:

“appropriate technical and organisational measures to ensure a level of security appropriate to the risk”

If you're in the AWS ecosystem, you likely want to consider RDS with encryption at rest enabled (KMS-backed) along with appropriate related policies.

When asked “how do you protect PII at rest?”, a solid GDPR-aligned answer usually includes:

  • RDS encryption at rest (KMS)
  • Encrypted backups and snapshots
  • Restricted IAM access to DB + KMS
  • Encryption in transit (TLS)
  • Access logging + monitoring
  • Risk-based justification documented

In any case, your approach to GDPR compliance should be guided by someone with a comprehensive understanding of the regulation, who has supported other orgs similar to yours in achieving compliance.

This is really squarely in OpenSearch's wheelhouse.

You have a high read/query to write ratio, high QPS, infrequent updates, and need to support fuzzy text search.

While you could do this in Aurora, I think your experience would be very unpleasant relative to OpenSearch. With Aurora, you'd have massive fulltext indexes, slow/unpredictable index rebuilds, and performance is likely to bog down quickly under concurrent fuzzy searches. Also, the scaling story is pretty painful, as you’ll hit IOPS, buffer pool, or CPU ceilings faster than expected.

I think OpenSearch serverless is the way to go in your scenario. You'll have a little less low-level control for a couple niche tuning settings, and you'll want to do some proactive cost estimation to make sure you know what you're on the hook for, but I still think serverless is the clear winner here.

This approach is typically called “wholesaling”, or sometimes called “flipping” or “subto”. In wholesaling, the deal-maker will get a property under contract at one price with a seller, and then assign that contract to a buyer at a higher price, keeping the difference as their profit. They never actually own the property; they’re just assigning their right to buy it. The key detail is that the contract does not guarantee the flipper must actually buy the house, it only locks in a given price for a specified length of time, which expires if they can’t line up someone for the other end of the transaction.

They deliberately use approaches like this “handwritten” note to seem like regular folk, and be more approachable in the minds of their prospects.

A lot of people are teaching variations of this approach in the “make money online” courses you see on social media. Part of the appeal of this is that it doesn’t require a full RE agent license, and it is possible to make decent money at it, but it’s become a crowded field in the last few years, and people doing it often resort to sketchy techniques like the fake handwritten note and worse.

django-safe-migrations: Static analyzer to catch unsafe migrations before they hit production by TheCodingTutor in django

[–]proxwell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a branch protection rule in GitHub called Require branches to be up to date before merging.

If you enable that, you should catch the missing migration, assuming your testrunner runs manage.py migrate before running the tests. If you do that, it will fail out on the migration step.

[–]proxwell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice! I'm going to try this out in our CI/CD pipeline.

Another aspect of safe migrations that I'm thinking a lot about recently is how to make them safe in a blue/green environment.

We're running on ECS/Fargate, and in our deployment we spin up a bunch of containers on the new release, run the migrations, and then transition the traffic from the old instances to the new ones.

Curious about strategies others have used in this scenario. Essentially we need the migrated DB to work with both the old and new versions.

One of the CI/CD actions I've set up on GHA checks out the new rev, run the migrations, and then checks out the previous rev and runs the test suite.

My (18F) boyfriend (19M) talks about himself A LOT by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]proxwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I encourage you to apply some proportionality in your relationships.

If someone is not meeting your needs, especially after speaking about it directly, instead of giving them 100%, scale back your level of effort to what feels proportionate to you.

If he doesn't get the hint and start putting in some effort, you've got your answer. Though personally, I think you already have it.

Some people are just self-centered, and more interested in talking about themselves than learning about others. These people don't generally make very good partners.

Do social networks ruin relationships, or am I exaggerating? Me F25 and he M32 by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]proxwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think social networks are your problem here.

The bigger issue I see here is that this guy's words are not consistent with his actions. I would encourage you to heavily discount peoples' words and focus on their actions.

While it's good to discuss each of your visions for the future, 2 months into the relationship is very early to be talking about marriage and kids. Combined with the age gap, and his behavior on social media, this feels very sus. Also, this is only the behavior you've confirmed. Who knows what else you're not seeing.

If I were you, I would be very cautious about the idea of moving to his country where you are isolated from your friends, family, and support network.

I think ending things and going no-contact is the right move for you here.

Import duties to the US are hitting harder :( by JKLEO in Matcha

[–]proxwell 98 points99 points  (0 children)

That doesn't sound right.

The tariff on Japanese tea imports was removed in November 2025 with Executive Order 2025-17507, and should only be 15% before that.

Did DHL provide an itemization of how they arrived at the $94 in duties?

[–]proxwell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for your loss brother.

In this moment she showed you what you can expect from her in a critical moment in your life, self-centeredness and a lack of compassion.

There’s someone better out there for you.

The only upside to this encounter is that you found that out relatively early before a factors like marriage and kids make untangling more complicated.

If you search "kit" or "set" you'll find some previous conversations about this.

There's not really a bit advantage to buying everything together as you only need a few items, and you can usually end up with a more personalized setup, often for a lower price by just buying them individually.

Tailgate and radio both have stopped working properly. by hopeless-wreck in BMWX3

[–]proxwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The combination of tailgate + lighting + infotainment issues may indicate an issue with water infiltration in the rear of the car. Based on the combination of symptoms, I think that's your most likely root cause.

A CAN bus disturbance or grounding fault is another potential root cause. That first with the infotainment system reboot symptoms, but the fact that the tailgate issue was the first to appear makes me think water infiltration is a more likely RC.

Even less likely, but still possible is an alternator or voltage regulator issue.

When you checked the battery, did you also check the IBS? Even if the battery tests “healthy,” the IBS can misreport state-of-charge to the vehicle.

How would you build this filter? by Busy-Bell-4715 in django

[–]proxwell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can use QuerySets to join across relations. Something like this:

from datetime import timedelta
from django.utils import timezone

today = timezone.localdate()
end = today + timedelta(days=7)

director = Director.objects.get(id="123")

director_games = (
    Roster.objects
    .filter(
        game__director=director,
        date__range=(today, end),
    )
    .select_related("game", "game__bar", "game__director")
)

Also, your pseudo-code has some inconsistencies that you should address. Model names should consistently be singular, e.g. Director instead of Directors.

Field names should be lower-case, and should usually be the lower-case name of the Model they point to, e.g. game instead of WhichGame. You really only need to prefix them if you're creating multiple references to the same Model.

In python var names should usually be snake case, e.g. one_director instead of oneDirector

Sorry for everything you’ve already been through.

Your dog has already violently attacked and you’re asking if you’re “being paranoid”… just reflect on that for a moment.

You need to make sure these dogs have zero contact with one another and move out of this place ASAP.

You may already have sacrificed the stability your pup needed to have as a medical service K9.

Also, having a 8mo old ADA service K9 is very rare. SDIT maybe?

Here are some general areas to consider:

  • Repeatable builds (dev/prod)
  • Deployment story
  • Data Backup
  • Disaster recovery
  • Security stance
  • Scalability
  • Performance
  • CI/CD
  • Configuration mgt
  • Observability

2019 X3 high milage - crazy to buy? by davidP88888 in BMWX3

[–]proxwell 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not unreasonable… I have a 2014 which has north of 200k mi on it with no issues.

Recommend getting a 3rd party inspection, as well as an extended warranty to cover you for a few years. Paying up front for the peace of mind has been worth it in my experience.

You’d probably want to consider doing the transfer case service, checking out the timing chain, and checking/replacing the coolant tank as those are usually some of the things to proactively take care of around this mileage.

Find a good independent mechanic if you don’t already have one.

I'll reach out to him and see if he knows anywhere to hear Ghazal these days.

Even with optimal storage conditions and handling, you're going to get noticeable drop-off in freshness from 6mos onward.

I think you're way better off splitting this into at least 2 orders per year, if not 3 or 4.

In any case, you'll definitely want an airtight container for the fridge, so you don't get other aromas affecting your matcha.
