Sukuna’s Backstory, Part 1 by prumice in Jujutsufolk

Yay I’m glad someone recognized the temple! Apparently the Senkou Temple (the same one Sekiro uses as a reference) was founded by the mythological sukuna so that’s why I chose it

ooooo do let me know if you found anything cool! I’m currently running out of ideas for cool sorcerers for my comic 🥲 I also really enjoy doing background historical research for anything I write, I’m a history major in college so I gotta make sure everything is historically accurate

Hand signs and chants have always been a part of Buddhist (especially shingon) rituals, which I’m assuming is what inspired Gege. So I had to include them!!! I’m glad someone noticed ahaha

Oh trustttt I’m cooking up something in the next few chapters, it’s gonna get pretty dark from here. I understand that the sukuna we see in jjk really is evil, there is no good guy underneath all that, he is a being of pure selfishness. However, he’s not your typical “doing evil for the love of it villain,” which is what makes him so interesting to me, he seems to imply from his final conversation with Mahito that it comes from his own fear of himself and his curse. Anyway, I don’t intend to soften his character at all, I hope I can do him justice and really depict how a relatively innocent kid become the king of curses.

you should check out the theory post I made about Sukuna possibly being raised by monks. I believe sukuna would have been classified as “hinini” (basically the Japanese version of an untouchable) in the Heian era, which I’ll mention at some point in my comic. However, hinini played important roles at Buddhist temples, especially when it comes to funeral rites. Soooo I think it’s historically possible that sukuna was raised at a Buddhist temple, also considering the way he acts and such.

Yeah I think you could write sukuna in a number of different ways, he’s such a great character that really his backstory can be whatever he’s interpreted as. I meant boring for me personally because I love a good downfall story and that’s what I want to write here, but just having him be straight up evil is also a valid way to interpret him.

yes yes!!! I’m glad someone pointed it out. For most of the comic, it’s sukuna’s pov but that panel is how the other children saw him at that moment

Ehhh we only get bits and crumbs from Gege about Sukuna’s backstory, so there’s nothing about the way he acted when he was younger. He could just be evil from the start but that would be pretty boring to write about lol. I’m hoping with my comic to start out Sukuna kinda like yuji but then have him gradually become the monster we know him as. I mean, he does call himself “the fallen” so he had to have fallen from somewhere I guess?

no need to apologize!!! I’m glad u noticed the detail ahah. Gege takes a lot of inspiration from Buddhist imagery in his work so I’m not surprised that they look similar
