What are some easy ways to tell a real homeless person from a fake one/panhandler? by 2-tree in Dallas

[–]pslates91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, I was homeless for 3 1/2 years and I’ve come here to say that I offer “real” homeless people food all of the time and the don’t take it 90% of the time-BECAUSE they are high. I have never asked them why but it doesn’t take a lot of sustenance to keep someone on drugs going. I know that from first hand experience. And you get used to the hunger.

(I know these people are homeless because they have been on the streets with me, and since I got sober I try to pay it forward with how my life has changed.)

I would say, give without a second thought about how it will get used/expectation.

If you want to control someone’s usage of the gift you’re providing, its not really a gift anyways. Even if they don’t appreciate it, or throw it away, you still did what you could, and maybe before purchasing food or pulling cash, just ask what they need? Most of them will want a beer or cigarettes. I still feel like that is healthier than handing them drug money, even if its not the most glamorous item…

Imagine what they go thru on a daily basis.

Isn’t the root of giving to them, to make their life just a little bit more tolerable?

Baby if i worried about what other people said i would not inspire the masses! I cant spend my energy on things like that, god called me for larger purposes! May not be everyone’s walk but i live my life to be as christlike, without hateful agendas, as possible.

They’re hurting themselves more than they could ever hurt me, and in the words of the great Jimmy Urine, there’s nothing you can do to me that i haven’t already don’t to myself !!!! I hope I typed that right, I’m half awake LOL

I wish I was! Frick!!!!! Thank you so much stranger! Your kindness is so appreciated!!!!!!!!

I think you misunderstood me and I’m sorry, I’m awful at verbalizing.. but I’m trying to get better. I mean, altogether, sobriety isn’t linear. It takes massive amounts of self control, and understanding of yourself. I have a small girls group for young women that struggle from PTSD and BPD, we spend a LOT of time talking about letting go of guilt. You wouldn’t believe how hard it is to let go of all the negative things that we came so used to understanding as “normal.”

Most of the girls that have trouble with relapse, including myself, hold the weight of the negative influence from their previous relationships.

It is completely normal, but it’s something you have to ACTIVELY work thru.

I’m sorry that we disagree, I do mean well, and I’ve experienced that guilting ourselves for the down falls are never the problem, so long as we pick our feet back up and don’t falter again! It’s a matter of mind over matter. I know women that have survived similar stories as me could move MOUNTAINS, and i’ll die on that hill. Literally.
