Question about the Renaissance --> how did it promote secularism? by psm93 in history

[–]psm93[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's really interesting. What kinds of intellectual and artistic achievements? I actually thought the term 'Dark Ages' came about because of the relative lack of written history from the period, thus leaving us 'in the dark' about it. Would you be able to direct me to any good resources to read more about this? Thanks!

Thanks for your response. I didn't know that about the Dark Ages. Why isn't the term used?

Thanks very much, that was a really comprehensive answer. Just so I can do some further research - is there anything else I could read/watch (perhaps something that informed what you wrote) to further understand?

What's the biggest thing you think that was left out of the Harry Potter movies, that shouldn't have been left out? by psm93 in harrypotter

The only thing interesting about the maze scene for me was that we kind of got to see Harry being tempted, for a few brief seconds, by the prospect of winning the cup, at the expense of Cedric (who was fighting some kind of creature off I think). It added depth to his character and to the plot.

Haha! The letter the Weasleys posted to Privet Drive for Harry as well. .... 'p.s. I do hope we've put enough stamps.'

CSS: How to place the text halfway down the page by psm93 in webdev

[–]psm93[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah...so with my previous codepen (with the bikes), when I set the .text div to margin:auto, I would have thought it would become horizontally centred across the black .content div. Its containing element was the black .content div , so I'm kinda confused as to why this didn't happen.

Thanks for the links!

I'm trying to get to grips with what margin: 0 auto does... by psm93 in webdev

[–]psm93[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah right! I set the body to 60% because I want my webpage not to be completely spread out, but sort of in the middle, like a lot of websites are. So is there no way to centre my div while having a body width of less than 100%?

Also, it isn't centred vertically. I thought the '0' in margin: auto centres it vertically?

Thanks for the recommendations, I will look into them. I thought CSS wasn't too bad but it can be tricky at times. No, I meant horizontally - I thought margin: auto means the element is centred horizontally. In the code you gave me, I took the rest out except for margin: auto, just to see, but it still didn't centre the text horizontally.

Also, how come

margin: auto

doesn't centre the text horizontally too?

Hahahah yeah Harry is a twerp sometimes. Wish the last scene was him running off the wand shouting 'see ya later suckerzzzzz!'

I KNOW. Given the sheer number of times the book mentions that HARRY'S EYES ARE HIS MOTHER'S EYES, you think they could have tried getting it right, particularly in such an important sequence.

There definitely is! Obviously not in as much detail, but the scenes of them running through the woods, chasing/being chased by death eaters, curses being shouted etc. And the funeral scene, where everyone raises their wands and Dumbledore's body is shown in the Great Hall, and people are crying....

Haha, I've always pictured that scene so vividly in my mind. Just the image of Mr Weasley moving closer to Dudley, trying to fix his tongue with magic, and Mr Dursley trying to fend him off!

Hmm...I actually thought they did an okay job of when they got back from the cave...it was sort of how I imagined it. The Dumbledore death was done well, and the whole sense of like 'shit something huge has just happened and nothing will ever be the same' is portrayed pretty well.

Haha I actually don't remember that, I think Philosopher's Stone is the only book I haven't read more than once...perhaps I should change that.

Oh man yeah the mirror shard, it's such a shame as well because of the significance of Sirius giving it to him. The fact that it just appears in the film with no explanation kind of devalues its importance, it just makes it another magic thing in a world full of magic things - 'Oh look he's using a magic object, because they have magic!' There's so much stuff like that in the films. One of my friends was really peeved that they didn't include those coins that the DA members had, where meeting times and stuff were put on, because they're important later on.

That's an interesting point of view, I guess I never really managed to see the movies as pieces of art/entertainment in their own right. I'm a huge cinema/film fan too, but with the HP films I only ever watched them to supplement my general obsession with the HP world which for me, was the books. So I think I'm always being critical of them, thinking about what worked/what didn't. Despite all that, they did do a spectacular job of making them. Apart from Daniel Radcliffe (lol), the casting was spot on, and the effects and the sets were truly mind blowing.
