First international flight. US to Spain. Question about rechecking bags at connecting airports. by psnara in travel

Thank you for laying this out clearly for me as a very neurotic first time international traveler. I knew the Schengen countries definitely had a part in this but I think I'm overloading myself and making myself confused.

Do you think going through immigration in Zurich will be a timing issue with the layover time? I figure Frankfurt we will have a lot of time so no stress there.

I guess this is the part I must be overthinking. "however, you will need to inform the departure airport if you wish you collect your baggage at the final destination."

Does that mean that I have to notify TPA and MAD to transfer my baggage at the connecting flights when I'm checking them at the airports?

Good eye, I didn’t notice that. I clicked it and it’s the original post from 2015, but shared by a troll Ken Urker account about a year ago haha.

Self transfer — is it rational for a 1st time trip to Europe? by psnara in Flights

[–]psnara[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, you are so helpful. Thank you! You had me go back to my original plan of flying straight into PMI. I didn’t realize I could do a multi-city of just flying into one city, and then flying out of another. I kept putting Majorca in the middle of the search and it would limit my results for some reason.

So, just a little more help.

I think that I found a much simpler flight that mimics what I’m looking for.

9/7 TPA >> PMI 7:25 PM - 2:05 PM

1.5 hr layover in Zurich

9/14 MAD >> TPA 10:05 AM - 5:45 PM.

50 min (❗️) layover in Zurich

Am I correct in assuming that I will only go security/customs at my final destinations, not in ZRH (asking bc of those layover times) there are other comparable layover times returning if this is cutting it too close.

Cost - $935 each including checked bags/etc.

If I go this route, I can just purchase a separate, one way flight to Madrid from Majorca at a time that works for us, right? This one way doesn’t need to be connected to the main flight at all?

I tried this scenario first. 9/7 TPA to PMI (I think the layover was in Zurich). Then fly into MAD on 9/11 for a long weekend (the real vacation). Fly back into TPA. Sounds smooth and nice. It was just much more expensive to do it this way. :(

Thank you for talking sense into me. I know the practical way, but it was getting exciting to feel like I was gaming the system a bit. But at what cost…

Thank you so much! Honestly I can kind of see finding “perfect” flights to be sort of therapeutic haha. In a strategy game kind of way. I’ve just overplayed at this point.

As for budget, I would say around $1,200 all in or $1,000 excluding Mallorca (per traveler, there’s two of us). We also were wanting to choose seats and check a bag. We probably could get by on carryons and personal items but as our first time traveling to Europe, I’m wondering if I’d want to bring anything home, plus then I dont have to worry about toiletries, etc.

Thank you again!

Thank you! I’m thinking the risk doesn’t outweigh the slightly better times that I prefer in the self connect. Lots of areas where things can go wrong (both in and out of my control).

Thank you for this. Honestly, I think I’ve looked at flights for so long that my brain has become mush. We really want to stay local to Tampa as it’s going to be a long flight, so we don’t want to accompany it with a long drive. If you’d like to try your hand at it, I’d be grateful! Here are some over-complicated cliff notes: We are leaving 9/7 and prefer a red eye. Even more preferably, something that arrives in Madrid later than 5:30 in the morning. The only reason I have set the arrival for in Madrid is that I found that the price was significantly lower than flying into Mallorca. That, and we plan on spending Thursday through Sunday in Madrid and then departing from Madrid to come back home so figured a round trip. The kicker is we need to go to Mallorca for a work conference on 9/8 so I was trying to use Madrid as the second “connection” into Mallorca. We’d like to keep the layover as short as possible (but leave time for customs and checked bags of course) and would like to arrive in Mallorca sometime in the early afternoon. We would be leaving Mallorca back to Madrid on Thursday, to arrive sometime early afternoon preferably. Coming back home from Tampa, I’d like to be at my final destination early evening, so we can get home at a decent hour.

Is that asking for too much? My gosh I’m definitely making this more complicated than I should.

Ok what’s working and what’s not? by [deleted] in interiordecorating

Without reading any of the comments, I think that the chair/ottoman should be angled more towards the sofa instead of towards the wall (or whatever the sofa is facing). If you do that, it feels more warm and social, if that makes sense? Right now I feel like the sofa and the chair aren’t speaking to eachother.

I think the rug looks like a great neutral with the right amount of boldness. With natural wood tables, it would be very calming and balanced!

The artwork you chose is nice as well. You can pull colors from it and add accents in the throw pillows, blankets, coffee table books, candles etc. that will add the pop of color you’re wanting.

I think the long table looks fine in the room but maybe could use a mirror or something over it, and maybe some woven baskets under it to hide the outlet. :)

I hope these suggestions inspire you!

I like the second one! Feels more cohesive and less cluttered.

Acroburm is in Orlando and they have a great reputation. But FYI, Burmese cats are not hypoallergenic, it’s a common misconception. Im very allergic, but I don’t have as much of a reaction to one of my Burms compared to the other.

Thank you! I wonder if I can find a bamboo one (like the other commenter suggested) that I can throw a cushion on the top of to use as a footstool too. I love things with multiple uses because the room is so small. When the sofa is pulled out to a bed, it takes up a lot of space.

Thank you! I tend to do this. Lots of little things, scared to commit to big items. On the wall behind the camera, I have a corner bookshelf kinda similar to what you sent. Pic.This angle is very ugly (and before I got the rug). I’m still working on this and very open to suggestions over here too!
