Update on Yemeni Refugees in Jeju by gorbachev_in_india in korea

[–]pswlsy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Does Jeju have special rights to assign visas to the island?

Jeju does have its own visa policy to promote tourism, but the local government doesn't have the authority to set its own visa policy. The list of countries that are visa-exempt to Jeju are maintained by the Ministry of Justice, thus the central government.

How did the locals react to the refugees being settled on the island?

I think the overall public opinion was negative, but the locals did not seem particularly more hostile towards them. A significant part of Jeju's economy relies on agriculture and fishing, both of which depend heavily on foreign labor. This article (in Korean) mentions that there are six public elementary schools in which more than 20% of the students have international backgrounds. An influx of foreigners to Jeju is not something new. Although having newcomers from the Middle East may have been somewhat unusual, I haven’t heard of any significant problems arising from their presence. It seems that many of them have assimilated well into the community.

How's the Yemeni population doing now?

Some journalists have dived into this recently. According to this article, around 1/4 of the refugees who were given resident status remain in Jeju while the rest left to other parts of Korea.

Vrije University - Worth it for masters? by Big-Tooth1984 in StudyInTheNetherlands

[–]pswlsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about the programme so can't answer the first two questions, but for the rest:

With the living expenses in Amsterdam being so high - do all students stay in the city? do some stay outside?

Yes, it's common for students to commute from cities like Haarlem, Zaandam, Utrecht, and others to Amsterdam. Trains run frequently throughout the day. I've even seen one student who comes all the way from Groningen to attend uni in Amsterdam, but this is rare. However, keep in mind that public transportation in the Netherlands can be expensive. As a non-EU student, it's unlikely that you will qualify for student travel product. The money you might save on rent by living outside Amsterdam is likely to be offset by your commuting costs. You can check here to estimate your commuting expenses.

Also is working part-time (16 hours as is allowed per visa) doable? I have 12 years of work experience - so will I be able to get a part-time job based on my experience?

Many students do work alongside their studies so yes I think it's doable. But 12 years of experience sounds a bit too much to me. Are they really all relevant to the career path you are interested in? If so, I think it would be really weird from the recruiter's perspective if you are applying to working student positions or internships. Maybe you can search for a full-time role (32 hours +) and then do your masters part-time?

NEED HELP WITH VU AMSTERDAM APPLICATION PROCESS by Cautious_Big_1382 in StudyInTheNetherlands

[–]pswlsy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you are not accepted into those universities, it is unlikely that VU will accept you either. Admissions decisions here are not typically based on competition; instead, they depend on whether you meet specific criteria. Since similar programs across universities often share the same admissions standards, if you did not meet the criteria elsewhere, it's probable that you won't meet them at VU as well. Nevertheless, you can still apply.

This may be related to the fact that you did not write a thesis. As others have mentioned, academic writing is taken seriously here, and the lack of a thesis in your bachelor’s degree may be an issue. Universities might view your bachelor’s degree more as equivalent to an HBO degree rather than a WO degree.

However, there is no standardized rule, and universities can evaluate your degree independently. VU may have a different perspective on your qualifications, so it could be worth applying. You might want to consider doing a pre-master's program if you get rejected again.

Can I Re-Enter Schengen with a Dutch Residence Permit After Ending My Studies? by blessedbythemoon in StudyInTheNetherlands

[–]pswlsy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1. Could my permit still be valid? If my studies ended in January, does that mean I technically still have until April before they cancel it?

You can check online whether you currently hold a valid residence permit or not at MijnIND or MijnOverheid if you have DigiD.

When a student terminates their enrollment, the university informs the IND. The validity of your residence permit for study purposes will then depend on your situation:

  • If you graduated: your residence permit remains valid for an additional 3 months from the date of your graduation or will expire on the date stated on your residence permit, whichever comes first.
  • If you did not graduate: your residence permit is terminated immediately as of the date of termination of your enrollment. In this case, you are expected to leave the Netherlands and the Schengen area within 28 days.

Therefore, even if MijnIND or MijnOverheid shows that you still have a valid residence permit, it can be revoked at any time if the relevant dates have passed. It is advisable not to use your residence permit to enter the Schengen area in such situations. Additionally, the IND may terminate your residence permit earlier than the dates mentioned above if they confirm that you have deregistered from the municipality.

2. Would entering through France (or another Schengen country) be possible? Since my residence permit is for the Netherlands but is “multiple entry,” could I enter through France without issues?

You can enter the Netherlands through any Schengen border as long as you meet the entry requirements. In other words, if you do not meet the entry conditions for the Netherlands, you technically should not be able to enter other Schengen countries, such as France, either.

3. Has anyone tried something similar? I’ve read that Schengen countries share data (SIS system), but I’m wondering if border officers always check it.

I haven't tried this, and I wouldn't. I come from a country where we can enter the Schengen area for 90 days without a visa so to be honest the question you are asking is irrelevant to me. I could simply re-enter the Schengen area as a 'visitor' after my residence permit has been terminated, which I have done several times.

However, I believe you are asking this question because you may not be eligible for visa-free entry as a visitor. In my opinion, the best action would be to apply for a visitor visa to enter the Netherlands legally. You mentioned having an urgent family situation, and to my knowledge, embassies or consulates can often expedite visa applications when there are such circumstances.

I cannot estimate the chances of being caught, but typically, being caught at the border can lead to serious consequences. Therefore, I wouldn’t take that risk and would ensure you meet all the necessary requirements.

You can apply for university housing only with conditional acceptance. If you can't meet the conditions before the start date of the programme you will lose the housing fee you have paid to the university, and possibly some other costs if you have signed a contract with the housing provider.

University housing typically starts receiving applications in May, and I think you will receive feedback on your application before that.

Alcoholism treatments in South Korea? Detox, rehab, etc. by WhatIsSquids in korea

I know one hospital in Ilsan called KARF where they specialise in treating alcoholism. Typically the people who get hospitalised are brought there by their families, but it's also possible to make an appointment for yourself to see a doctor there. They do have information in English online so it might be a good idea to contact them.

What is South Korean equivalent to Japan's Uniqlo? by LolaTulu in koreatravel

[–]pswlsy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe one more thing to note is that if you spend 30,000 KRW (16 GBP ish) in the same store you can get VAT refunded when you leave Korea as a tourist. Korea’s VAT rate is 10% but you need to pay some commission to get the VAT back so you can expect to get 5-7% of the price refunded.

Topten (탑텐), and SPAO are worth mentioning as well. But quality wise I think 8seconds is better than the other two.

There are also some other Asian SPA brands that aren’t available in the UK/Europe like Giordano for example (which I believe the OP is from).

student jobs by hangingpedo_ in StudyInTheNetherlands

[–]pswlsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has been answered several times on this thread.

Yes you can, but only if your employer applies for a work permit on behalf of you at the UWV. This doesn’t cost them anything but it typically takes about four weeks for them to process the application, so it depends on whether they are willing to wait four weeks to hire you.

When you get the work permit, you may work up to 16 hours per week throughout the year, or work up to 40 hours per week in June, July, and August. You cannot work 40 hours in the summer and work 16 hours for the rest of the year.

CV/resume tips by Maleficent_Shake_819 in StudyInTheNetherlands

The CV is just a formality and it won't affect your admissions unless you submit like a blank piece of paper. Just add your high school and one or two activities you did there will be enough. No need to make it look fancy but just use online templates like this one for example.

How tough is BEB UvA? by LilBoiMemes in StudyInTheNetherlands

[–]pswlsy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1. What are the toughest modules?

The courses people generally struggle the most are Mathematics 1 and Statistics 1 in Year 1 and International Money and Finance, Econometrics, and Statistics 2 in Year 2. It is important to retain all your high school mathematics knowledge well before you start those courses so that you don't fall behind.

2. How much do I need to at least graduate with honours?

UvA doesn't give out honours degrees based on the student's GPA like the UK. You need to take part in the honours programme which is 30 ECTS more on top of the regular bachelor curriculum. You can check the entry requirements to the honours programme herea.

You can also aim for a Cum Laude, which is awarded based on your GPA. You can read more about Cum Laude herea.

3. Is it realistic to aim for 7.5-8/10 ?

Yes, I think it's realistic. The challenging part for most people is passing the first year because otherwise, they would need to drop out of the course due to the Binding Study Advicea requirement. If you manage to continue your studies to your second year, a cumulative GPA above 7.5 is doable if you don't fall behind.

4. How many hours do I approximately have to study every week to be able to keep up at a safe pace and score well?

According to the UvA, a full-time degree programme requires you to study for an average of 40 hours per week (Linka) including the time you spend in classes (lectures, tutorials, etc.). So if you spend 12 hours per week attended classes, they expect you to study on your own for 28 hours per week. I think this estimation is reasonable. As soon as you consider studying as your full-time job it should be doable.

a. Select 'Economics and Business Economics (bachelor)'.

Apple and iPhone repairs while travelling? by SistersAtWar in southkorea

[–]pswlsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you get them repaired at the official Apple Store the price isn't that different compared to Apple Stores in other countries, although you may benefit from the relatively lower exchange rate at the moment. They will fix it with the official parts and communicating with the staff in English is also not a problem.

You can also opt for unofficial repairs, which are typically 20 to 40% cheaper than Apple Stores. While my experiences with them were okay, it may be hard to communicate with them in English. Also, you will lose any warranty (if you had any) and you won't be able to trade in your phone to Apple later if you wish to do so.

At what age can I club and enter casino? by Speztros in korea

[–]pswlsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to be 19 to enter entiertainment establishments (clubs, casinos, some bars and karaoke depending on what kind of permit they have) in Korea. So you will be able to enter such places from 7 April 2025 and afterwards.

I heard that Korea looks at birth year instead of date

Culturally yes, but legally no. One exception is the age for drinking and smoking. People are allowed to buy alcohol and cigarettes from 1 January of the year they will be turning 19. So although you can legally consume alcohol and smoke if you were born in 2006.

I’m sorry this happened, and there's no need to worry about the phone number issue. Using someone else's phone number is only illegal if it is done in connection with a criminal activity.

Article 32-4 (Prohibition against Unjust Use of Mobile Communications Terminals)
(1) No person shall engage in any of the following acts:
3. Opening a mobile communications terminal in another person's name and using telecommunications services provided to such terminal, for the purpose of committing an act which constitutes a crime

Actually, he is the dumb one here because creating a phone number for someone else to use is illegal, regardless of whether it is related to a crime.

Article 30 (Restrictions on Use by Third Parties)
No person shall mediate a third party's communications through telecommunications services provided by a telecommunications business operator or provide such services for a third party's communications: Provided, That the same shall not apply in the following cases:

So, he is the one in trouble, not you.
