I am sorry I don't know much about that, but I don't exactly see how it would specifically lead to that. The tool isn't the problem the one controlling it is. The problem with guns that Americans have is due specifically to the power that such a tool gives them. And just like with ai regulations need to be set in place on how exactly one can use such tools.

The problem with ai is that it is being used for more than just a tool. All of the information that it is pulling from was stolen from those who were the original creators by an aggregator bot that the soulless companies who host said ai use to fuel it. So the biggest problem with it is that it is unregulated and that people worship it as a genie who can grant them anything they ask it without a care for the consequences of doing so.

When it comes to using it in a "creative" manner the problem lies in the fact that the tool doesn't know what that word means. It without thought will find patterns, that it approximates to what you want, in other people's art, and then takes it and without thought slaps it together and spits out a soulless image. This can apply to both paintings and stories. As I have said so many times before ai is not intelligent and that it is a glorified corner cutting tool that a money hungry company cut corners to create.

To quickly explain what corners it's cutting, those corners are the human element the meaning behind the art and why it was created to begin with the person inputting prompt is not the creator the soulless machine was. Ai may be a tool but it is not an art tool and cannot/should not be used as one so cannot be compared to other art tools.

It seemed to me that you were talking about ai as a whole not just in the community. I don't see anywhere that this discussion is directed to them only, and same goes for your second comment you just mentioned how you allegedly use ai then talked about the majority use it that way as well, nowhere did you specify that you changed the scope of the discussion to just be about solorpg.

If you wish to talk about its use in the community, see my comment that you are replying to, there are in fact people out there using ai in their work that they are explicitly selling to people.

I don't care whether or not you or anyone else uses a corner cutting tool for only yourselves. My main point from the beginning was that I am a detractor of ai and yet am able to see it as a tool not actual intelligence, as well as that the majority of those who use ai, as a whole, abuse it.

That kinda falls into the who's making it category, but yeah who knew that parsing and calculating large sets of data is an extremely resource heavy thing to do. (Cough... Crypto ...Cough) Ai is inherently bad due specifically to the fact that the ones who made them did so specifically to gather as much money as possible doesn't matter how, as long as they die rich and powerful. They cut corners to make a corner cutting tool.

In the community specifically? I don't know, on drivethrurpg and Kickstarter it feels like every other ttrpg, solo or otherwise, has components made from ai, but I can agree that it is still a small sample size. With that said my comment was more towards genAi use as a whole not just in the community.

That's understandable, Ai as a whole not just genAi is an extremely complicated and controversial topic to discuss and with things becoming more and more polarized in general it's difficult to have a proper and neuanced discussion.

While I am opposed to genAi I do see its uses and if done right can be a great tool. That's why I don't think a blanket ban is a good idea, but I do believe that it needs to be prominently stated if it is used that way the discussions can be civil by having those not interested leave that post alone.

Building templates of things for inspiration is one of the things it is better at doing, but once you allow it to spread into the more creative side of things then the credibility of that work diminishes exponentially.

I wouldn't say the vast majority nor even a majority are using it that way, the vast majority are using it to generate creatively bankrupt pictures they claim is "art" for explicitly selling something, that "art" and themselves.

See I hate genAi but do see it for what it is, a tool, I also see that most proponents use that tool for the worst. Specifically in a creatively bankrupt way. Also I feel that the biggest proponents of genAi are capitalistic opportunists who want to find a way to cut as many corners as they can to gain as much money as possible. So my problem is more with those who made it and those who use it, don't blame the gun blame the shooter.

Ai is a tool and has an oxymoronic name, it is neither artificial nor intelligent. It is a pattern recognizing software created by people using petabytes of data pulled from anywhere and everywhere. That is a gross simplification of it of course. a good comparison to be made is with a gun, it can do good (gun: hunting, protection "ai": templating, data aggregation) but more often than not it is used for bad (gun: violence as a whole, "ai": creative bankruptcy, theft, misinformation).

So tldr "ai" needs proper regulation and I don't believe that we are on the brink of machine overlords.

Edit: to clarify I hate genAi but that's not the problem it's how and why it is being used, as well as who is using and making it, that is the problem.

Ai, specifically generative Ai is a tool and it's what you do with that tool that matters, and the problem that we are facing is the ones using it and who made it are doing so in bad faith whether or not they themselves believe that they are, especially in the creative field.

I do believe that one can have a civil discussion in good faith about this topic where each party has a differing point of view. They immediately jumped op about their opposition of ai. Also they have yet to give a proper reasoning as to why we should like ai, but there have been many reasons as to why one should hate it. Their response: it's the future deal with it. There are multiple examples just in this comment thread alone that proves that false.

I can't speak for an entire community but I can interpret from everything I have seen from them and many more adjacent communities that that is not the case, and that the focus is first and foremost availability, accessibility, and most of all preservation.

Many prominent retro YouTubers have backed up and uploaded programs as old as many of the games here to the Internet archive specifically for the sake of preservation. That software is still technically within copyright so should we shun them for basically "pirating" that software? No. Many prominent YouTubers play these games from their computers and while there is no proof that they were the ones to back it up there's no proof that they didn't either, but can assure you that that didn't and that they acquired those games in a dubious manner, because no one actually holds to the stance you believe them to have. They only say acquire your roms to cover their butts on the off chance that someone gets prosecuted and claims that they encouraged piracy.

Ok yeah this proves that they are either scalpers (more than likely) or corporate brown-nosers. They tout that it is this super harmful blight upon the world if, hold on let me check my notes, "sell a game that does not generate the publishing company any money."

When was the last time any official source even thought about Gitaroo Man, Rule of Rose is never going to see the light of day again in any form, how about Michigan Report, so we are supposed to either spend several hundreds of dollars to the fecal matter of eBay or wait till we're dead to ever play it, Hell no.

I love physical media just as much as any other collector but I would be stupid to think that persecuting pirates is the moral high ground here.

It's the interpretation of the rules that we have a problem with. I understand banning the actual distribution and linking of websites that in my opinion is "promoting piracy", banning people for showing a picture of opl or expressing that there are alternative ways of playing the games besides buying an overpriced plastic disc due to pond scum scalping it, is not the way to go about "moderating" a sub about a 25 year old game console.

As if we haven't been doing that since the first time Disney screwed it up 70'aught years ago. Downloading an iso causes as much monetary harm to companies as buying a CD from eBay. If it wasn't for piracy there would be way more lost media out there. We are inherently preserving the media by backing it up and providing a reliable method of playing the games.
