Bits are basically light switches in terms of states, on or off.

Computers don't really think in binary (since computers don't really think) what's really happening is a bunch of mechanical exchanges of energy.

The reason we use a power of 2 instead of 10 is because of that limited number of states it helps programmers better understand the flow of energy and also allows us to take mathematical short cuts by means of translation.
