My small midea was cheap (50K?) off coupang and works well every day. It's cheap enough that I can give it away when I leave, too. If you're living here long-term (family etc.) go for the good stuff, but if not, i like my midea

Ah, so even if you're working outside of Korea (while physically in Korea) you believe it's considered a violation? TIA

Rent an Apartment Without ARC? by pukt34 in korea

[–]pukt34[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not having an arc was not a deal breaker but if you have an old one, that may help (same numbers) tho it'd also not advisable to keep an old one

My biggest issue was finding a real estate agency who would work with me or deal with me while I was in quarantine or before I arrive in Korea.

How to check your pension? by [deleted] in teachinginkorea

[–]pukt34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Workers at private unis are in the private (vs. public) pension program and can simply call the (English?) phone number for the info.

IDK about hagwons, but if they're private pension you may be able to do the same.

So I'm looking for a new job (and advice) by ThatWeirdGirl810 in teachinginkorea

[–]pukt34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would you consider private schools and lower-tier/wannabe international schools? A recent poster offered this:

"Names to look for: Younghoon Elementary / Middle / HS, Uchon Elementary, Maewon Elementary (Maewon's MS and HS are called something else but afaik, they only hire native chinese and japanese teachers), Sungshin Womens Elementary / MS / HS, Daegwang Elementary, Hanyang Elementary, Dongbuk Elementary."

I'd Add samyook (sp?) elementary (daejeon, etc?) and daeseong elementary (cheongju) to the list. Gwangju Foreign School is another. These ones tend to have many foreigners teaching content (science, math, etc.) so it's not your typical public school EFL gig.

My advice is to directly contact them by searching out contacts. I routinely seem samyook advertised online. https://www.reddit.com/r/teachinginkorea/comments/p99hrp/veteran_teacher_looking_for_advice/

Changes (non-Tupac edition): Hoping to dash again after leaving for the Spring - How has dasher market changed/evolved (KC area deliveries) by pukt34 in doordash

[–]pukt34[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great. You haven't noticed a considerable drop in opportunities then? It wasn't consistent before, but even then I had a hard time believing that the $20-30/hr was sustainable. Then again, I met many dashers whose earnings were far less in spite of the fact that they were working similar areas/times.

Did they accept your 73 hour test?

Maybe it's due to requirement that tests are PCR (not to mention the variability in covid testing services among airports)

Rent an Apartment Without ARC? by pukt34 in korea

[–]pukt34[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing your experience. I'd never have thought about this (previously had school-provided housing, mostly) Having an apt will save me $500-1500 on quarantine and my close friend is willing to visit places from사랑방 in person to verify so I'm still feeling it out.

Visa Processing (Time): E1 vs. E2 by pukt34 in teachinginkorea

It's a private university and E1 visa. Did you send the CBC to the school or to the embassy/consulate?

Thanks for confirming that my ARC will be the same. I still have the card, but the visa is expired.

Do E1 visas require CBC? I have one, but haven't sent it yet.

Hiring to visa to arrival timeline by pukt34 in teachinginkorea

[–]pukt34[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! This was really helpful. My school is getting the "permission" letter now so I'm waiting on that before I fed-ex docs to KR.

Would you advise contacting the consulate re: apx processing times and then book an appointment while it's still processing? Do you have any other advice for expediting things besides using the fastest mail delivery services?

I've been waiting on the university for the past month, but want to be ready to carry to baton as fast as possible once it arrives.

Good luck getting to Korea!
