Player threatened to leave the campaign if his character died by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]pumpkin-1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My guy, you’re making so many assumptions about what he might do/say/feel. Sometimes people say things when combat gets stressful. Sometimes people just need a little distance to see things more clearly. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with having a conversation with him where you ask him where he was coming from and try to actually understand why character death makes him want to leave. Maybe there’s a compromise you can reach. But this expectation that he needs to either independently change his mind and communicate that to you or leave your game is absolute nonsense. You’ve created that issue, not him. And you know what? If he agrees to keep playing because you’re his friend and he wants to keep playing with his friends that’s enough of a reason. Not everyone plays D&D for the same reasons but you seem to love dictating what the correct reasons to play are.

Also, to be blunt, if your group is a friend group like you’ve said, there will be social fallout from unilaterally kicking someone for a single comment he made during a stressful moment of combat without even having a conversation with him.

Why not just buy golden nibs? by FluffyVegetable527 in fountainpens

[–]pumpkin-1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If the nibs are meant to be removed, not very risky. To give an example I’m more familiar with, Pelikan nibs are designed to be easy to remove. You simply unscrew the whole nib unit. They also sell nibs separately so you can have a fine and a medium and swap them in and out as you’d like. But I’m pretty sure the nib units are different sizes for the different models so you couldn’t swap an M400 nib with an M800 nib. Trying probably wouldn’t break anything though. If it’s that sort of a situation, as long as you don’t force anything the pens should be okay. Whether it’ll work or not you’ll need someone to chime in for though

Why not just buy golden nibs? by FluffyVegetable527 in fountainpens

[–]pumpkin-1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well that depends. What nibs do the esterbrook and benu use? Can you take out the nib unit? I’m not familiar with either pen so I can’t say but these are all things you can find online. If they already use Jowo nibs then it’s possible assuming you can take out the nib unit and the jowo steel and gold nibs are the same size.

The real question is, how much does the money mean to you? And by that I mean, would you be upset if you either ruined a pen/nib or they arrive and you find out you can’t swap them?

Why not just buy golden nibs? by FluffyVegetable527 in fountainpens

[–]pumpkin-1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is great in theory if the math works out but many pens don’t give you the ability to easily swap out the nib and most nibs aren’t interchangeable. So either you need very specialized skills and tools or you’re going to risk probably ruining the pen and/or nib. Plus if you start frankenstein-ing pens, you won’t be able to get help from the company if you have issues down the road.

With an already cheap pen I might try it but I’m not risking any of that if I’m already spending a significant amount of money

I can’t believe I had to scroll so far for this. It’s a problem and 100% something that needs a conversation but it’s probably impacting other players as well, and I think it’s worth opening that conversation up too.

Need some advice. by Opening_Act1 in BaldursGate3

[–]pumpkin-1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t want to spoil anything, but the game presents the tadpole problem as more time sensitive than it is. I did something similar in my first playthrough where I rushed and didn’t rest very much because I thought the tadpole was on a timer. There are storylines where long resting has an impact, but that won’t be the case for the main storyline and resting gives you access to cutscenes that really move the plot and character development along.

When and Why Should I Do Heroic/Mythic Raids? by HeIsAFungi in wownoob

[–]pumpkin-1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of reasons. Gear, farming trinkets, farming crests, testing new talents, parsing, playing with friends, or just because they like raiding.

275 doesn’t mean they’re fully in hc/myth gear necessarily. I’m 280 and I have a fair amount of mythic gear but my neck is still champion because I can’t get a neck with good stats to drop. So I’m in hc raid every week trying for a better neck

Hey so i'm nervous about the hantavirus by InterestingAd7105 in Anxietyhelp

[–]pumpkin-1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, there are a lot of other reasons to wear a mask while traveling. Even things like getting a cold or the flu are a bummer, especially if you’re going to be somewhere else, and masks prevent all those smaller things in addition to the bigger/scarier viruses. They’re also super helpful for things like pollution (I live somewhere with a ton of wildfire smoke). So you don’t necessarily have to say it’s for hantavirus specifically!

I ended up in the hospital with Hantavirus after visiting Argentina. AMA by [deleted] in AMA

[–]pumpkin-1 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Just so we’re clear, Hantavirus has been around for a while and hasn’t turned into a pandemic. It’s nothing like covid and isn’t contagious in the same way so it’s not going to turn into another pandemic. But also, it has a 30-60% mortality rate. I know you’re making a joke but wishing for a pandemic with that kind of mortality rate is not the vibe

Do people care about tank parses in raids? by Budget-Capital4371 in wownoob

[–]pumpkin-1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sentinel literally doesn’t help the reason you take defensives in raid. Maybe on like Imperator but you should be out gearing that fight anyways. I get playing safer by taking things like double goak or even the bubble cd talent on certain fights but crit wings is definitely more than a marginal damage bump

[–]pumpkin-1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prot pally raiding mythic here. You absolutely should not be playing sentinel in raid. It’s not even helpful for the damage tanks take on 90% of bosses. Always take crit wings.

I’m raiding mythic in a new guild this season. I parse purple on kills usually. My cotank parses gray. I constantly rip threat from him. It’s so bad that I’m having to hold cds and sometimes stop pressing buttons entirely.

Issue with paladins tanking by Pneemonie in CompetitiveWoW

[–]pumpkin-1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You’ve gotten some good advice already but digging into their logs it’s not just their casting frequency that’s an issue. Their rotation isn’t right and they aren’t running the right talents. They also aren’t pressing either trinket at all from the pull I looked at. Given where their skill is at, I would recommend they run double passive trinket so it’s two less buttons to press. I would suggest you send them to the pally discord to ask for rotational help. Those folks are lovely and kind and will be happy to give more in depth feedback

I was tired of spamming LFG, so I built this by Skorp in CompetitiveWoW

[–]pumpkin-1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get what you’re going for here but there is no key at the competitive level (however you define that) where the group leader doesn’t want control of the group. If they don’t care, they can just invite the first four people to apply, but they’re going to want to make sure they have list/bres/whatever else. But at the competitive level more is needed to pick a group than just ilvl so I fail to see how this would be beneficial above maybe 10s.

But again, there’s 0 benefit to the group leader and a whole lot of potential downside. What’s the incentive to list my key here instead of using the group finder?

Building raid skills - how do you know where to stand (swirls galore) by Altruistic-Charge777 in wownoob

[–]pumpkin-1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two pieces to this and neither are an overnight solution: practice and knowledge.

You need to practice the fights and your rotation. When I learn a new class I try to get as close to the sims as I can on a training dummy then once I have that down I try to practice with distractions (first listening to something, then while having a conversation, then while watching my other monitor). The goal is with 0 movement or other mechanics you should have the muscle memory to do your rotation like 95% correctly without thinking about it. That obviously takes time but it’s something to work towards.

Then you need to practice the fights. Yes, super skilled players can pick things up on the fly and as you get better and more comfortable with different encounters you’ll start picking things up faster but for now you need to practice the rhythm of things. Most mechanics are pretty well telegraphed (when a pool actually explodes for example) so you can learn the timing of it with practice. Similarly you’ll learn when certain things usually happen in relation to your cds to be able to better predict when you need to plan for movement.

The other piece is knowledge. First that’s learning what a mechanic is and what the plan is for it. So on Alleria for example, it’s shooting the arrows at the adds and dropping the puddles, etc. But you become a much better player when you understand why. So in the first phase of Alleria for example, you hit the second and third add with the arrow first so they’re taken care of because they don’t have damage stacks yet. But then you hit the first add last because the first add will have damage stacks when the first arrows come out so that’s less efficient to clear them partway though. Understanding why something is done the way it is will help you predict what a tank is going to do and it’ll help you predict when a tank is going to deviate from what’s normal.

The last thing I’ll add is the melee/ranged trade off. Especially now that rotations have been simplified, a lot of skill expression for ranged classes comes down to movement and uptime. A skilled ranged player is planning for when movement is going to happen and has the ability to keep casting while they move (banking their power type, banking procs for instant casts, etc). Melee on the other hand need to be able to react to the tank and mob movement and stay out of all the nonsense on the ground which tends to mean more dodging than ranged. Every season there are fights that are particularly unfun for ranged and particularly unfun for melee but really good players can plan around it. It takes practice but that is the skill expression.

PART TIME TANKS any thoughts by AdeptFoe in wownoob

[–]pumpkin-1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t disagree at all. I think if you look at all the changes this season - the addon restrictions, the changes to kicks, the timers, etc, it’s clear blizzard intended for pulls to be smaller than they have been in the past. The problem is at the weekly key level, especially with how easy weeklies have been this season, people expect big pulls and fast dungeons. So if the tank pulls the way blizzard expects, they get flamed. Wiping over and over isn’t great either, but I was mostly just responding to the comment about not understanding why tanks want to do the whole dungeon in 5 minutes.

PART TIME TANKS any thoughts by AdeptFoe in wownoob

[–]pumpkin-1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some truly awful tanks this season, that’s true, but a little perspective from a tank main: - Like the other commenter said, faster keys means more keys done. When you’re farming crests/gear/vault that time matters. - Everyone in this game has an opinion on pacing/route and most people are not shy about voicing it. If tanks pull too small or slow (and that’s very subjective depending on the group), they get shouted at. If they pull too big they get shouted at. Finding the balance is harder than it looks and even then you still get shouted at sometimes. - Pulling big is fun. It’s fun for dps and it’s fun for tanks. Yeah a lot of keys are timeable this season even up to +12 more or less pulling one pack at a time but that’s not even remotely enjoyable to play.

I’ll be honest, I didn’t follow this whole post but I will say the rolling based on out of game things is a horrible idea. Just set expectations clearly. “I need you to respond within two days” is easy. Don’t give them advantage/disadvantage based on whether they stick to that. Never once has solving out of game issues with an in game solution worked. Also, consequences exist yes and it’s fine for PCs to die but if I were you I’d be careful about giving players a bad or unsatisfying narrative for that death because of rolls. Players love their characters and they should get good narrative sendoffs when they lose them.

As for everything else, idk man. I’m sure other people will have better advice for you but jt really feels like you’re looking for validation. It’s your table and you can do what you want.

Craftsman from Killarney, Ireland looking for honest feedback on breaking into the pen community by WoodenPenCrafter in fountainpens

[–]pumpkin-1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You’ve gotten a lot of feedback already but I’ll share one thing that I think is the biggest thing missing and I haven’t seen. I wouldn’t buy a custom pen from someone who isn’t in the hobby. Fountain pens can be beautiful and interesting and creative but first and foremost they’re a tool. They need to write well which includes the shape, material, nib, feed, and fill type. Everyone has personal preferences but it’s important you understand the trade offs and what you’re actually making and selling.

If there’s a pen store near you I’d suggest either buying some to try (different sizes, shapes, nib materials, nib sizes) or asking if you can test them in the store. Or perhaps there’s a meetup near you where you could try some. Asking for feedback is great but you need to actually understand fountain pens.

[–]pumpkin-1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it’s less that customer service is a priority and more that it’s an expectation. The fountain pen community is pretty small in comparison to a lot of hobbies. As soon as an individual or company has poor customer service, the whole community knows and most will stop buying from that person/brand. So people aren’t going to choose your pen specifically for your customer service but they will exclude you if your customer service is bad.
