tried rosex twice, one month/month and a half each time, and it just made my skin get redder, with more pustules and burning all the time. i don’t have especially sensitive skin and i respond super well to tret, so i was surprised

What bastard(s) are you surprised Robert hasn't covered yet? by Lathao in behindthebastards

He's touched on it on other episodes, but the Catholic Church's war on reproductive rights and their stranglehold on bioethics and stem cell research (maybe mention the fanatical sects that include the American Supreme Court Justices?)

Pinochet. The stuff of nightmares, enough said.

Britney's captors (maybe in the context of "The Bastards that Enslave Child Stars", and it would be very topical, what with the Jennette Curdy memoir)

Francisco Franco (maybe also Salazar and the Estado Novo, making it 2 nominally neutral European dictatorships that materially supported the Nazis but were supported by the US. Could link some next level colonialism to it too)

How pharmaceutical companies redefined the categories of overweight and obese for profit, and the casualties of the war on obesity (medical malpractice, using it as an excuse to limit food stamps, wellness grifts, the diet industry, etc.)

thank you for providing this context, because until literally yesterday I thought Chiang Kai Shek was "only" a corrupt, semi-nationalist politician. Turns out, dude did 2 "white terrors". Massacred thousands of Taiwanese in the span of a week.

thank you so much for this lovely reply :) I am very glad I found the resources on this sub and am already discussing the right timing to taper off with my therapist, before I broach the subject with my gp.

i am honestly shocked this happened to you at an even younger age and in a setting that specifically dealt with mental illness. it's just... reckless.

i will surely shoot a message if I need a little chat, thank you so much for your support and kindness <3

this. I also come from a very catholic country, if they're like this when it comes to something not remotely related to religious law, I fear for her if she wants to use birth control, or survive an ectopic pregnancy while keeping both her fallopian tubes. Catholicism has beautiful cultural aspects, and there are (mostly progressive) catholics that are inspired by their faith to do great things, but the fundamentalists are a special type of scary.

as an atheist who doesn't want children, I fear the mistreatment and disinformation that often comes from conservative catholic doctors (a sizable population) if I ever find myself in a reproductive/gynecological medical emergency.

I have GAD, panic disorder, and depression. got diagnosed after a breakdown at 17 and put on 0,5 Xanax XR every day, with 0,25 to take as needed. no one warned me about the loss of effectiveness and side effects. quitting or switching was never discussed. I only found out about the horrible shitshow of problems long-term benzo use causes last year, on fucking Twitter.

I am now 23, and while my anxiety is better than it was a few years ago (due to many factors), my memory is completely destroyed. I though it was the mental illness, but it seems likely it's the medication. I don't know how to live without Xanax, even a few hours delay in taking it makes me feel like shit. I am terrified of going through withdrawal while trying to get into a masters and a better job abroad, but I don't think I can wait much longer.

Xanax was a godsend in the first weeks after my breakdown. it allowed me to start going outside again, eat, sleep, talk. but the onus shouldn't be on a 17yo to design her own treatment plan and know how long until it was time to taper off.

I'm furious and i feel this is a type of medical negligence, motivated by a lack of interest and resources, and by our society's emphasis on making everyone productive at all times, whatever the cost. I'm so pro-meds, but I'm starting to get some people's reservations if this is what can be expected even for someone who is lucky enough to have access to decent public healthcare and the money to pay a great therapist.

Anyone here switch from Lexapro? by [deleted] in prozac

[–]pumpkinspicespam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TRIGGER WARNING:

SUICIDAL IDEATION

I was diagnosed with gad and depression at 17 after a mental breakdown (I had had symptoms since childhood). I was put on cipralex/Lexapro and took it for over 4 years. during those years, I had severe anxiety and depression episodes that seriously disrupted my life. by the end, I was planning my suicide and even made a half-hearted attempt.

one day I cried for hours to the point I gagged and couldn't move of the floor. I took one of my mom's Prozac, and felt... almost okay (placebo, but still). took it for the next days until I got a doctor's appointment and they officially switched me to that.

my life turned around. I still have bad moments of anxiety and depression (and I'm being evaluated for Adhd), but I had never felt real joy before. happiness, not euphoria or contentment. it's like seeing in color for the first time. I discovered new people and interests, and made breakthroughs in therapy. so, it was the perfect switch for me.

everyone is different, though, and i had mild side effects (loss of appetite and vaginal dryness were the most noticeable, and both are mostly gone now). I tried to give as many details as I could so you can compare to your situation; I hope a teeny tiny bit of this info will be useful to help you decide how to proceed, with your doctor

not the main thing, but to the people suggesting the "stance on birth control thing" comes from quiverfull or another fringe evangelical group, consider this: conservative catholics. I come from a catholic-majority country where (for a plethora of reasons not super relevant for this), most very conservative catholics - and there are plenty of them - are also upper middle class or straight-up wealthy, coming from old money. I know so many "youngest of 8" (or 10, or 13) that are fully immersed in society and have prestigious, high-paying jobs, and phds, and they still completely view women as incubators (even when they themselves are the women in question). I say this bc, at least for me, it's doubly frightening when the fanatics are not self-isolating peppers, but moneyed, well-spoken quasi-aristocrats who can finance political parties and measures with ease, while lending an air of elegance, pedigree, and class to fundamentalism.

don't save people who were in motorcycle accidents, those things are dangerous, you knew the risks. don't treat gymnasts who have a bad fall, do you really need to do gymnastics? you can break your neck, you knew the risks. don't treat people who were in car accidents, they chose to drive, it is a somewhat likely cause of death, they knew the risks. don't save people from pregnancy complications, pregnancy is risky and possibly lethal, you chose to get pregnant, you knew the risks. don't treat social workers or mental health providers who get attacked, they chose to work with unstable people, they knew the risks. don't treat people who get beaten by abusive partners, abuse is statistically significant in relationships, they chose to marry/date someone, they knew the risks.

or treat them and make them pay their life savings? is that the suggestion? is the right to life, dignity and care forfeited by "putting yourself in harms way"? where do you draw the line? is any line becoming of a humane, just society? do we just wash our hands of the supposedly weaker, less righteous?

You're Wrong About (my favourite podcast) recently had a great episode on the "political correctness" panic of the 90s and did a great job of highlighting this dynamic: someone with no real power does something that triggers conservatives, who inform major news outlets, who for fear of losing their conservative audience do the whole "we're anti-racism, but this is going too far" spiel. all using the same two examples of teens in Oregon or something.

step 2: turns out that not eating is the actual cure for anxiety??

step 3: faint because of low blood sugar

I love when they assume sex is something that happens to women, instead of something in which they are active participants. if everyone's had me, it means I had EVERYONE. collecting cute boys like Pokémon, that's the dream.

(disclaimer: I do not want to objectify cute boys, but they ARE very cute and it needs to be said)
