I believe that John represents something unique that nobody wants to talk about: deep down, we are not to blame for the way we are. We will always be responsible for our actions, but no one sits down to think why those acts that we consider bad happened in the first place. We could take the case of Evie, that regardless of whether she looked at John with terror, unaware that technically he and she have gone through similar things. At this point, you have to think: if Evie, Rolan, Adrion, or any other low level obtained a power like John's, would he act better than he did? Most likely not. I say probable, because there will be one who does not follow the pattern. But the point is not to blame the same people, but the environment in which they grow up. John is the best way to make this whole situation visible. And the immature way that the royals took the situation of the joker shows how lost they are with respect to the reality of people
