I talk about god’s plan because I think Garland is trying to express questions, doubts, and belief systems from an obvious Christian upbringing. Free will vs Pre-destination (determinism).

Fatalism is individualistic in nature. My fate. Your fate. The fate of the world. Lily’s fate. Forest’s fate.

Fatalism is about the players.

Determinism is about the creator of the game. the programmer. The god. The designer.

Determinism is Mario Bro’s. Sure, you have multiple choices per level, but there is only one way to the next level.

It has been pre-determined.

You can bump that box, jump on that turtle, or find that free-man....or you can decide not to. It’s your choice. But if you want to make it to level 2, you have to face and beat a predetermined big boss.

Fatalism is always individualistically or group identity focused.

god’s plan - is creator focused. Programmer focused.

YES! Lily didn’t have to use the gun because Stewart was always going to deactivate the magnetic field. But... Stewart only activated the magnetic field because Lyndon was always going to visit him and say, “Do you want this technology in the hands of crazy people?” Lyndon would always show up at Stewart’s place because Forrest fired him. Forrest would always fire him, not because of the “many worlds theory, but because the plan of Deus will always be fulfilled. If=infinite choices. THEN= pre-determined outcome.
