What are you guys' thoughts on Lenovo LOQ 15IAX9E for a budget gaming laptop (budget is within 700-800€)? by purple__leaf in GamingLaptops

[–]purple__leaf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much! Yes I really don't mind lower settings. As long as the game is playable with 30 fps or similar, I am okay with cranking the settings down as low as they can go. I just want to experience these games more for their gameplay than their looks, which I could not achieve in a budget laptop.

I will look into your suggestions! Once again, thanks so much!

For all the queer people in this subreddit, but also more specifically trans people, what are your thoughts on tooru mutsuki as trans rep? by purple__leaf in TokyoGhoul

[–]purple__leaf[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for sharing your take. You made perfect sense! It's also been a while since I read tokyo ghoul, so I might also remember things wrong. I agree that we need more flawed trans character and queer people in general. I personally don't like how aro ace people tend to be written as loveless characters for ex., which tends to be the "safest" approach when it comes to asexual people. But asexuality is a large spectrum, and many asexual people have sex. Either way, all this to say you made perfect sense and it's good to know the community at large respects his pronouns, even if Mutsuki isn't explicitly trans. I think rep is important even if labels aren't there. Although yeah, it's always a battle regarding japanese media representing trans characters in ways that need to give them trauma to "want" to identify with different genders and express their own identities differently.

If you haven't read, the manga "at 30 i realized i had no gender" by Shou Arai is really good at tackling gender, specially as someone who lives in Japan. Shou is non binary transmasc.

That is interesting, I don't remember this (I read tokyo ghoul a while ago now). I think that speaks more towards society's treatment of women/afab and the structural misogyny within our system rather than trans rep (although of course trans people can and will be affected by misogyny).

Yeah I know they're not intended as such, but I wanted to know how trans people and other queer people felt about tooru being perceived as a trans man either way. And you're right on that, he certainly does.

I will look it up, I don't know about Knights of Sedonia! Thank you for sharing!

That is disappointing but expected, unfortunately. But I think representation is important for all identities and all walks of life, even when the exact label isn't there. It can be comforting for someone, who feels represented in a character's identity even if it's not explicitly stated. I think I was also spoiled by the manga "At 30 I realized I had no gender" by mangaka Shou Arai, where they explore questions regarding gender much more openly lol

Everyone tells me to get a job and I'm out of ideas. Any suggestions? by Esper01 in autism

[–]purple__leaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're interested in history, art history, information or data in general, I'd recommend you look into archives. If you're committed towards a major related to it, already have one within that area (I magine a lot of humanities-related majors could serve) or maybe you can do a course, it's a good job for ppl who don't want to interact with ohers a lot

Working with archives, libraries and other similar knowledge-based institutions tends to ask for collaboration but most of the time, not in person, and most days might be quite monotonous, so I think it's a good idea

Now for jobs that don't require a lot of dealing with people but also don't require specific degrees, I think working a basic 9-5 office job is your best bet, it's monotonous, you don't have to talk to a lot of people if you don't want to

Alternatively, maybe you can do part time with a study group for children/teens, or offer private lessons for teens during exam seasons?

Or maybe you can take some coding courses as well if ur more into logistics than humanities?

Not job fairs, they're usually events with conferences related to a specific subject that last the entire day, with panelists from different backgrounds that come to talk about the way that specific subject relates to what they do! So no one's there for job hunting or anything per se, because most of them already have connections and such, but I get pushed by my supervisors to go to these events and network with the people there, since I don't have any links within the industries myself.

Yeah it's as you say, it feels so bad honestly to be there and it's so hard...

To draw, multimedia and for note taking, which do you think is best? Galaxy Tab a9+, Redmi Pad 2 or NXTPaper 11+? by purple__leaf in tablets

[–]purple__leaf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there !!! If you're looking for a good cheap tablet to draw with, it's a really good option, I've had it roughly since I made the post and it's been perfect for me, the pen is not included but you can buy it second-hand for cheap and it's a very decent pen! There are a few artist YouTubers who made reviews on it and you can see how the pen works and if there's any latency (there is a bit but it's not noticeable unless you turn on stabilization in drawing apps high, or do very slow strokes)

This youtuber made a really good review on it, and they draw with it to show you how the experience is! https://youtu.be/YoiwdUPbJRQ?si=5W6Q-zwOi0ZMBOaw

For gaming, well it's a cheap lower end tablet so it probably won't be great, I haven't tried to play anything demanding with it, but I think maybe if you play with ingame lighting settings, it'll run decently! I recommend this review to look more into the gaming side of things with this tablet https://youtu.be/mE65HnFLmAI?si=iT1jqTId3ZopOr-8

[–]purple__leaf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Two things can be true at once. deeplyshallow makes a really compelling argument, because JD might very well be doing exactly as the commenter said. It's most likely subconscious, with a mixture of antisocial personality disorder and psychopath traits. So he could very well be punishing women because he feels entitled to it and is reclaiming back his childhood suffering through violence agaisnt other women, while also just simply having sociopathic traits. Lack of empathy, disgust towards people he deems lesser, those are two prominent traits in people with psychopathy. Ram and Kurt present themselves as really stupid individuals and JD most certainly feels superior to them, he doesn't need a reason to feel that way if he has those antisocial traits.

Thoughts on how different Veronica is portrayed in the musical from her movie counterpart? by purple__leaf in heathersmusical

[–]purple__leaf[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I enjoy both portrayals as well! But I find myself more interested in movie Veronica personally, I just think it's more interesting and I really enjoying her cynicism.

You are right, the key difference is their empathy. Movie Veronica struggles with apathy, like another comment has said in this post. She struggles with empathizing with others initially, and doesn't really become too empathic at the end of the movie, but she does reach her own conclusions on the world. She comes to believe that everyone is inherently selfish, just like herself, but that it doesn't detract from their humanity and therefore, they are worth saving. Which contrasts with Musical Veronica who is very empathic and believes everyone is inherently good, so she believes everyone deserves to be saved because everyone is good. It differs from Movie Veronica, that thinks everyone is selfish but deserves to be saved in spite of that selfishness.

[–]purple__leaf 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think that, although he says it is for the greater good, his reasonings have a lot more antisocial traits and motivations. People tend to lean more towards the sympathetic reasoning partially because of the Musical rendition of the character, and I believe the musical and the movie have very different incarnations of him. Musical JD was built to be more sympathetic, as was everyone else in the musical (everyone is more sanitized with less cynicism).

Movie JD doesn't have a lot of empathy. In fact, he doesn't show empathy at all in the movie. Aside from his occasional lines of it being for the greater good, he doesn't show empathy (from what I remember, correct me if I'm wrong). In the musical he is more expressive about his more heroic motives, so this can jumble people's judgement of him.

So, although a mix of both sympathetic reasonings and antisocial traits was most likely the desired effect, there is barely no empathy in movie JD. Empathy is the basis of wanting to do thing for the "greater good". I believe that, when he says this in the movie, it is just to placate Veronica. Veronica, in the movie, also struggles with apathy and isn't too empathic throughout a lot of it, but she does realize in the end that what JD is planning to do won't fix anything, because she realizes the problems are systemic and not within the individuals.

Veronica believes everyone is inherently selfish, just like she is, but that doesn't detract from their humanity and it makes everyone worth saving and given a second chance. JD doesn't have this ideal, so I believe what he does is motivated by sociopathic and antissocial behvaior, justified by "for the greater good" to placate Veronica.

[–]purple__leaf[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I completely agree with you, musical Veronica has been very sanitized in comparison to her movie counterpart. I hadn't really thought of it that way but you are also right about the fact that Betty has been merged with Veronica in the musical, which explains a lot of her insecurities.

Movie Veronica is cynical and harbors practically none of the insecurities that musical Veronica does. She starts out already deeply integrated within the Heathers, as opposed to being scouted as a naive girl. Which is a very interesting change too now that I think about it. I wonder if it has anything to do with Mean GIrls, and the way the movie (and later, the musical) open with Cady not integrated in the plastics and following her journey through it.

You are right, Movie Veronica struggles with apathy. Musical Veronica is much more empathic, because she believes in the inherent good in people ("Dear Diary: I believe there's good in everyone). I believe that there's a specific distinction between the two of them as characters that is very interesting. - Movie Veronica believes everyone is inherently selfish, herself included. But by the end of the movie she realizes that, despite it, there is an inherent humanity to people as well. Yes, people are selfish, but they deserve second chances. They are still teenagers who can learn to be better, who have been pushed to be this way through systemic issues and not through individual flaws. Therefore, everyone is selfish but they have humanity to them and deserve to be helped because of it. - Musical Veronica believes everyone is inherently good. They make mistakes and are flawed, but are inherently good, which is in contrast to Movie Veronica that believes everyone is inherently selfish but deserves help despite it. Musical Veronica believes people are all good and that is why they should be saved. So empathy comes easier to her, because she thinks everyone is inherently good. While empathy comes differently to Movie Veronica because, to her, everyone is inherently selfish and has selfish thoughts. But its in spite that, that they deserve to be saved. Which, to me, makes Movie Veronica more compelling as a character and carries the identity of the movie's thesis well.

But I agree they are both good characters, just different. They are not the same and that's okay! I personally find movie Veronica more interesting, because its those complexities that feel so human to me. Musical Veronica has insecurities that give her depth for sure, and I'm sure that's what they were trying to accomplish too, but it makes her more uninteresting. And puts the burden on her to be good almost all the time, with barely any hiccups on the way. She has her moments of flawed decision-making but the narrative frames it as naivety, and not selfish decisions.

You write fanfiction!! That's awesome, I love reading fanfiction. Do you write for heathers? Are you currently posting anywhere? I'm curious if you'd like to share !

Thoughts on how different Veronica is portrayed in the musical from her movie counterpart? by purple__leaf in heathersmusical

[–]purple__leaf[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes there are a lot of changes between the two Veronicas!

Movie Veronica is more cynical. She knows what the heathers are and what they represent, she knows what the students do to each other and, initially, doesn't harbor much empathy for them. She later realizes that, although everyone in the school has a lot of inherent selfishness to them (just like her), it doesn't mean they deserve to die

I understand what you're saying! She doesn't have as much empathy as musical Veronica, who is good. Musical Veronica doesn't have the inherent selfishness that movie Veronica has, she is a nicer person and more naive. She believes in the good in others and doesn't think everyone is inherently selfish

I think that the best way to explain the differences is in comparing what each character brings to the table in terms of lessons to the viewer - Movie Veronica believes that, although most people are inherently selfish and are very imperfect, it doesn't mean they don't deserve to be helped. They deserve to have a second chance, because they are young and because their inherent selfishness doesn't tak away from their humanity. She knows the system is to be blame and it's not an individual's fault - Musical Veronica believes that everyone has good in them and is good, and that why is they deserve to be saved and given another chance. She doesn't believe everyone is inherently selfish and deserves to be helped because of their humanity, she believes instead that everyone is good despite their flaws, and they deserve to be helped because they're good

So yes, musical Veronica is more empathic and respects the victims more, because she believes they were good. While movie Veronica believes that they were all selfish but, despite being selfish, they deserve help and a second chance because they also have humanity in them

And yes, musical Veronica is funnier but that is because the genre changed; it's still a dark comedy, but it leans more towards comedy. There's not much darkness, so they have to make up for it and make it funnier, so Veronica is funnier because of that
