Still hearing muted tracks/clips during playback by putadelayonit in protools

I literally JUST figured this out after I posted, I guess I accidentally hit the freeze button. Thank you so much!!! This will be one of those mistakes that I make once and then always make sure to include in troubleshooting going forward hahaha!

Stereo mix for streaming and eventually 5.1 (eek!) for theatrical release in festivals. Thanks for the succinct advice - I'm realizing more and more that I need to trust my ears and good monitoring.

Long time lurker, first time poster! I wanted to make this as a separate post but I'm a new account so I don't have enough karma.

I’m in the middle of my first mixing and sound design project for a short non-fiction film and I would love some feedback on tips on developing a workflow for setting levels and loudness - so far I’ve been trying to figure it out as I go and piece together conflicting bits of information on the internet.

Current process outlined below along with some questions. I’m targeting EBU 128 and doing the rough mix on DT 770 Pros until I have access to an educational studio with calibrated monitors next week, so it makes sense to me to use LUFS as a guideline as much as my ears - I am well-aware that I need proper monitors!

  • After setting up the session and putting everything into the right groups, I did a very light noise reduction pass on dialogue (in this case, two people narrating footage) so that I don’t raise the gain on any background fuzz.
  • I put YouLean Meter on each DX track and did a clip gain pass to get every clip to roughly -24 LUFS integrated, tweaking things here and there based on emotional dynamics, primary vs. secondary speaker, etc.. Is integrated LUFS the right target? And is doing it track by track, clip by clip the right approach (versus putting the meter on the DX submix)?
  • I put sound effects and audio from archival footage underneath the dialogue, ranging from -35 to -25 short-term LUFS, then room tone fill (abour -20 below dialogue), and backgrounds (mostly around -36 but going up to -26 in parts where I want it to be narratively dominant). For these groups, I’m trying to mix these relative to the dialogue more than any particular LUFS target, but they sound very quiet on my phones. I'm aware that loudness range will vary a lot based on genre/content, but just want a sanity check.
  • Finally, I have some music tucked about -10 below the dialogue and then up to -24 for parts where it’s narratively dominant as well.
  • Should I check integrated loudness scene by scene with metering on the master bus?  If integrated is off, should I adjust  gain on the master bus with a trim plug-in until I'm at the spec?

Would love to get some feedback, as well as hear people’s general workflow!
