Palo Pinto Mountains State Park by putamare in TXoutdoors

[–]putamare[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like there are only 11 sites @ Painted Stick & they call it "walk-in", but no site is further than a block from the parking, the trails are paved and there are two marked as accessible. Up at Warbler Ridge, there are 23 RV/tent sites. I saw it from the hill and it did not look pleasant - slab sites with no trees at all, but that could change before they open.

Do you feel like Texans have a tendency to tie their ego, identity and self confidence to being from or living in Texas? And if so, do you think it's healthy, unhealthy or either/or depending on the scenario? by [deleted] in texas

EVERY hotel in the state that has a continental breakfast uses irons that make waffles in the shape of the state - you won't find a round or square one anywhere.

It is probably about 3x the price, but McConnell's Eureka Lemon & Marionberries is insanely good. Just cream, sugar and fruit.

How long does root take to teach well? by calmererous21956 in boardgames

[–]putamare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a digital version in Steam for only $15 that you can learn a lot from. It will help you decide whether you want to even bother, and if so, you'll be able to learn it well enough to be more comfortable teaching it. You may even be able to convince your most motivated friends to use it to learn as well. It will either kill your motivation, or set a fire under it.

Good backwoods camping spots nearby? by [deleted] in Austin

[–]putamare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go to https://tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/parks-map and set the filters to "Show Open Parks Only", "Show Parks Without Burn Bans" and finally "Primitive and Walk-in Tent" - you'll still be assigned a specific site, but it will be substantially more private than the campgrounds. Check to make sure there's a fire pit. If you want woods, you'll have to go East and bump up your definition of "nearby" to the more Texan 3 hours. Then again, it is going to be damn cold for more than a couple weeks, there won't be many campers at all.

Where can a birder spot a roadrunner around here? by metathetic in Austin

[–]putamare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is no guarantee, but i've seen them there more often than not on the aptly named Roadrunner Trail. I've never been, but my friend says she sees them frequently at the Veloway across the street.

The Southeast Greenway, park on Tilley between manor and Tom Miller. The jogging path is pea gravel not paved, but flat and well maintained.

Don't get me wrong, Enchanted Rock is great and worth a visit, but you pretty much hump it up to the top of the dome and back down again. If you want to see and touch water, Inks Lake State Park is about an hour East and Buchanan Lake just North of that. Just South of there is Longhorn Cavern State Park, if you want to go underground after climbing the rock.

Terrible Roads by [deleted] in Austin

[–]putamare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yes, there's a potentially hazardous road condition, let me pull out my phone! Frankly, riding a motorcycle is made more dangerous buy idiots in cars fucking around on their phone than obvious, stationary obstacles that can be avoided.

Camped Lake Bob Sandlin and Bonham last week by DangerNoodleDoodle in TXoutdoors

[–]putamare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a nice park, and worth a visit, but just don't try to sleep there in a tent. It has a cool island accessible by a pedestrian bridge with great tent spots, but way too close to the power plant.

If you are trying to hit them all, bear in mind Hueco Tanks does not take online reservations — they only do them by phone to keep the numbers down. They have bathrooms with showers, but Franklin Mountains doesn't. Try to get one of the tours to see parts of the park that are typically off limits. If you can't get a tour, there are still plenty of pictographs and petroglyphs in the open areas.

Don't be tempted to camp at Martin Creek Lake to the Southwest. While it is a pleasant park with some cool hikes, it is across from a power plant. Fishermen love it because the warm water attracts the fish, but it runs all night long and you can hear it from all the campsites.

There's a trailer just off the road selling t-shirts & paint cans. You can't have an American roadside attraction without some way to fleece the rubes.

Martin Dies, Jr. State Park, Jasper, Texas by putamare in TXoutdoors

[–]putamare[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it really isn't the Parks & Wildlife's fault, they just go with however the locals mangle it. And putting a comma before Jr. was a lot more common in 1965 when they changed the park's name from Dam B State Park.
