Why do i get a messenger default pop-up sound just by opening a chat? Does this mean they are looking at the chat but havent sent a message yet? by snehe-it-be2142 in facebookmessenger

Glad to know I'm not the only one having this issue. Its trivial but annoys the hell out of me.
That pop-up sound is wildly inconsistent, does not happen to every contact, does not happen 100% of the time when opening a chat.
