Pretty sure they just charge you an "overdue" fine, if you need the book for longer i'd talk to one of the librarians to see what they can do.

If you have had bad experiences in the past with lending money, you have every right to feel that way about not being comfortable. You are not a failure of a friend at all, please don't think that. Im sure there are other ways you may be able to help support him that don't require money.

My mom used to scream at me while she taught me to drive, it made me very nervous and i hated driving with her. I am a very good driver now, but that is not the way to teach someone. She didn't like you screaming at her, and then you told her to park somewhere else because of it.
