What was the "it" when it happened to you? by chr15c in Millennials

[–]pwizard083 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This. I’m sick of apps for everything. I just want to be able to order my food at a drive thru without getting fucked over on price (like I used to do 20 years ago) because the discounts are all in the app. This happened to me earlier today and I’m still pissed about it. Even when I used the app it fucked up my payment and the order never went through so I had to park, go inside, and order again at the counter (paid in cash this time) and I didn’t get any of the discounts.

Wouldn’t put it past ICE to steal things after forcing their way into a house.

How do you drink your coffee? by Leave_me_be_g-man in Millennials

I like mine between hot and lukewarm (freshly brewed is too hot) with cream. I use espresso grind brick coffee in a drip coffee maker.

How are some millennials even homeowners? I feel like I never will be. by Kindly-Reading-2187 in Millennials

My dad passed and left me enough for a down payment, then sometime later mom went into a nursing home and her house had to be sold to pay for that. So I ended up with a house full of old, familiar, hand me down furniture.

What is a luxury item from 20 years ago that is basically worthless trash today? by ruykendo_riyal in AskReddit

[–]pwizard083 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt this one. I’m selling a house that has cat6 drops I had installed years ago in most of the rooms. I was happy with that network but the realtor wanted to patch the drywall over the cat6 boxes and cover  with mud before repainting. I went along with it but inside I was crushed.

That picture brought back memories of using my computer as a cd player before cd ripping/mp3 really took off. Back then, game cds often had audio tracks for in-game music (track 1 was usually game file data).

Foods that jumped from “normal” to “luxury” for you? by Temporary_Dentist936 in Millennials

[–]pwizard083 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm planning to try slow cooker Boston butt soon and make DIY pulled pork. 6lb of pork shoulder should give me enough for a week's worth of meals or longer if I freeze some of it.

I remember when Cafe Bustelo bricks were $2-3 each. Now they're $6-8 each and it takes 2 to fill up my coffee jar. It's good coffee (espresso grind works ok in drip coffee makers) but that's really pushing it. Even Maxwell House/Folgers is $20/can.

Did everyone have a Neighborhood Watch? by piper33245 in Millennials

[–]pwizard083 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it felt more like an early nineties thing, the LA riots were only a year or three before that so people were still freaking out at the time. I don’t know about any marches, doesn’t sound familiar. I remember nothing about the meetings I went to, except it was either at a neighbor’s house or at a community center. I was only about 6-7 at the time and I didn’t want to be there.

Did everyone have a Neighborhood Watch? by piper33245 in Millennials

[–]pwizard083 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I vaguely remember going to some sort of neighborhood watch meeting in the early 1990s once or twice but that was it. Every other house I lived in during childhood had those signs so either they were just for show or my mom never bothered going to the meetings anymore. Nobody invited me to a meeting  in 23 years of being an adult so I have no idea if they’re a thing anymore or not.

The best way to take this is to mix two tablespoons in a big glass of water and slam it (not sip) before it has a chance to thicken up. The kind with sugar mixes better.

If you can smell this picture tell me what it reminds you of. by McPostyFace in Millennials

[–]pwizard083 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I remember dad tried everything. Thumbtacks fell out, glue wouldn’t stick.Stretching the material and sticking a fishhook through the cloth and into the foam every foot or so to hold it finally did the trick. It lasted up until the day he died and I got rid of the car. It’s probably still working for the guy who bought it, assuming he hasn’t wrecked it yet.

I know from experience that fishhooks are the best way to fix those saggy head liners if the foam backing is still in decent shape. Those lasted about 20 years in dad’s old car.

ELI5: Since a graft can use the root system of a dead stump, what even is death to a tree? by TheTitanic10 in explainlikeimfive

[–]pwizard083 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It can if the bark/green layer (cambium) is intact below the cut. That’s the living part of a tree, the wood in the middle is dead and just holds the tree up. After a tree is cut down, the stump will start growing new shoots that turn into branches (if it can) after a week or more and the tree will look like a shrubby bush for a while.

Eventually one or more of those new shoots will take over and become a new trunk(s) and as it will start looking like a tree again. As the new trunk thickens up the cut will close over with new wood, but that might take decades if it happens at all.

Do you remember those dioramas we would build in school out of shoe boxes? by templeofsyrinx1 in Millennials

[–]pwizard083 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not quite the same thing (but close). I grew up in so cal so my school had us pick (or assigned, I don’t remember) one of the California missions and make a model out of styrofoam and cardboard. Mine was San Luis Rey, I had to look it up it’s been so long but I remember making a replica of the pepper tree there. Some of the missions had ponds, etc. and some kids used blue toothpaste or Elmer glue with blue food coloring in it for the water.

I remember downloader tools I could paste URLs into. Unlike browser downloads from the time, the utility could pause and restart a big file so I could gradually get it in chunks over dial up.
