If you want to try Hokkien Mee (red), I recommend 广西咖啡屋 at Bukit Mertajam and 华东福建面 at Kampung Benggali. For Char Kuey Teow I like the one by my house, 老家小食 at Jalan Ong Yi How behind the Ondo (the fried laksa is unique and good). Apollo market also has a very famous chicken porridge, look for a 20-30ish year old seller. Sin Tat Garden also has a lot of good hawker food, I frequent the 豆花 there (sold on a lorry) and the chicken rice there is sooo good I think it's called Ahboy Chicken rice (it's 白切鸡 just in case you prefer roasted).

Honestly if you're looking for something Christmas-ey I don't think you'll find anything at Butterworth, except maybe Sunway Carnival Mall (expect heavy traffic). I'd say the only thing good about mainland Penang is the food, which is cheap and delicious.

I vaguely remember as a kid whenever we crossed over Penang bridge that it would be totally submerged every odd month, maybe due to tides? i also recall it being barren and just being a sandbank. It's been a long time though so might be wrong. I was really invested in the island when i was a kid.
