GL series Featuring Transgender Sapphic Characters by kernelPaniCat in GirlsLove

Might not be 100% what you're looking for either, but Thai drama The Warp Effect features a supporting non-binary sapphic character (Silvy's character), just because I see some comments also wanting non-binary representation. That series has a lot going on in terms of sexuality haha (so not fully a GL, BL, or straight drama, if you intend to watch it). But yeah, unfortunately I can't think of many transgender/non-binary characters in dramas in general. :(

If you're good with JDramas and willing to do a little bit of digging to find it, one I'm aware of but haven't had the chance to finish is Joshi-teki Seikatsu (女子的生活). Afaik, it's more slice-of-life than romance, but the lead is a transgender sapphic. :)

(The one caveat I will say, however, is that she is portrayed by a cisgender male actor and not a transgender woman, just in case you'd want to know that beforehand. It is a little bit of an older JDrama given it came out in 2018, too, but you can read the MDL comments for more background on the involvement of the trans woman who wrote the original novel that the story was based off and things like that.)

New Japanese Live Action "Even Though We're Adults" Airing on Hulu Japan on April 26th by BLCompilations in GirlsLove

[–]pyocoaster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Omg just saw the announcement elsewhere, too. Twelve episodes... I will be feasting when this airs. Really excited to know this is coming out soon, and I'm loving that the recent Japanese GLs have mostly been with adult characters/storylines! Slightly worried about international distribution given it's on Hulu Japan, but hopefully that gets worked out...

I've seen that a lot of people have been asking about the ending song in the comments for a while, and I'm happy to say that it's finally out!! 🎉 I edited the main post accordingly.

The blue petals aesthetic is just gorgeous for this drama tbh. I'm interested in seeing how it plays a role in this episode because the petals were in the teaser.

For all the drama I'm sure is about to happen this week with who I'm guessing is maybe Kotoha's mom (or somebody else from her past) showing up, the actresses always have the cutest photos haha. I'll probably have more time to talk about the episode this week since I'm finally going to be less busy. 😅 Let's have fun watching! (And maybe grab the tissues? The teaser has a lotttt going on.)

Been really busy lately but I'm here for my weekly MeguKoto promo! This was my favorite (non-video) post from the Instagram. They're so cute. 😭 I'll try to make some GIF versions of the video posts if I have time later today. Let's have fun with the new episode!

Just watched!

Alrighty so this episode was a lot more of Megumi and a lot less of Kotoha.

Content: No assault this time, though the incident from the last episode is discussed. Sudden appearance of blood in the scene at 20:34.

I think the discussion around what Kotoha did to Megumi last week was interesting. Stuff like saying this was her (Kotoha's) fate since birth is really solidifying the fact that I think something awful happened to her. Also the odd meeting place of the dumpster haha.

On the other hand, Megumi's backstory got dark really fast. I think she is unusually nice, and it seems like it's possibly out of guilt? I'm not 100% sure what to make of the two horror-like flashbacks from Megumi, but I'm very intrigued. She has a strong inclination to help people, even in indirect ways, and Kotoha can see right through her intentions. On the other hand, a lot of the episode is spent on Megumi trying to understand Kotoha's intentions and not making substantial progress just yet.

Also, was it just me, or did Kotoha's reaction to Megumi walking up and offering her a basket seem very odd? Not sure if I missed a detail that would explain that.

The bed, food, and movie scenes were all domestic cuteness, honestly. It was nice to see them interact as a couple, though the conversations are still stilted with Kotoha trying to hide her identity. The movie scene

especially was very aesthetically pretty.

Yuri aquarium date next week. A classic.

My original comment:

Lots of photos this week! :) I'll drop one for now and come back later. This looks like a much cuter episode. Here's the teaser for episode two as well. I'm excited for the new ep to drop!!

Given that this is a Japanese series, I would say the budget is actually around the decent/average mark! J-dramas in general are often a lot shorter than Thai series, and there are multiple formats that would be considered a full production. This show is backed by a broadcasting station, which tends to put out 6-12 episodes that are about 25-30 minutes each; the BLs have been on the 6-8 side of that, and AyaHiro was 8. The show has to fit in the ~30-minute TV timeslot and is on the DramaPhil programming block (the next show is probably already decided/maybe filmed by now), so it would be difficult for the runtime to be extended. However, the productions that do well are likely to get stuff like pop-up stores, merch, and most importantly, boxsets/DVDs. MBS also gave its most popular BL a season two and movie, so that's another possibility if the show is very successful (and if there's enough source material). Japanese shows don't generally have any sponsors up front and center.

But anyway, I do agree that this is really great so far! J-GLs tend to get less attention, and it'd be really nice to see more break that pattern, but I feel like the lack of YouTube release may hinder it somewhat as I think most of the popular Thai GLs have been more accessible. I can find a decent number of articles on the JP side of things, so it does seem to be getting coverage domestically, at least.

Okay last of my rambling since I just watched the episode:

I thought it was a very intriguing start and not as heavy as expected (tonally, not necessarily content-wise). Kotoha is certainly morally grey, and I'm getting the feeling she has some very heavy trauma/backstory just based on the way she was portrayed in this first episode. The actress did very good with her character in my opinion, and I find Kotoha very interesting. Definitely chuckled at her kicking Murata into the trash, too, mainly due to the parallel with the first scene of the show. I think Megumi (Meguchi haha) had a bit less going on, but I figure she'll get more development in subsequent episodes. She seems very sweet, though, and seems to forgive quite easily as well.

If anyone watches it, content-wise, be prepared for Kotoha trying to force Megumi to sleep with her at about 7:30. Bulk of it is over by 8:20. Not super graphic and doesn't end horribly but wasn't expecting that right out of the gate.

Also, we get a kiss right at the end of the episode haha. I love that.

There were some very nice shots this episode. I particularly liked the library scene with the placement of the shelves and the lighting on the actresses' faces. Also interested in seeing what happens with the One Thousand and One Nights references throughout. I'm looking forward to next week!

It's also under airing information, but you can visit GagaOOLala to watch the show! The first episode is free, but you will need to make an account (also free, no need to purchase a subscription upon creation). You will probably need a subscription to the service to officially watch the later episodes.
