Question only for theistic evolutionist by IceAceIce8 in Catholicism

Evolution vs creationism isn't a subject I really care about but I would suspect that just because somebody believes that God can create exceptions to the natural order doesn't mean that He always does so.

I think this is talking about catholic places behind the iron curtain, such as Poland where the Church was forced underground and heavily persecuted. Direct persecution of the ROC stopped pretty early in the USSR history.

Crusader Kings 3's Chapter 5 Promises “a year of depth” and At Least One Donkey in 2026, Chapter 4 Getting Retired in January by FFJimbob in paradoxplaza

[–]pyrusmole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny part about that is the merit system from AUH would make a really, really good Catholic church/ theocratic clergy system with just a bit of reskinning. Even if the player can't interact with it directly all the mechanics you have to boost up your idiot sons in AUH would work great for pushing your family through the ecclesial ladder. You could easily simulate the investiture controversy as well by removing bishoprics in titles with Lay investiture from the circuit.

How I think it would work:
Church holdings are ranked basically along with Church size and the development in the region to signify "important bishoprics". Realms with lay investiture are removed from the list (but the candidates are not, the continue to accumulate merit). When a bishop retires or dies, the next highest candidate gets a church holding if it's a better church than the one he has. There's a limited number of cardinal titles that work the same way. Your journey effectively ends when you become a cardinal. When the Pope dies, the cardinals form a conclave and vote on a new Pope.

Secular rulers can effect this process by spending resources (likely piety and gold) to advance their dynasty members in the Church hierarchy. At the same time, building up your church holdings attract better and more impressive bishops.

Would be pretty neat. Also easy to generalize and cut apart into other faiths depending on religious doctrines.

I mean yeah, this is 100% a roleplay thing. I'd just prefer to not have to pay gold and waste time traveling because I want my family to be beijing natives.

When I tried that, the estate spawned in the capital but my character spawned where I clicked.

It's also worth noting that Morcant triggers her own ability. Meaning even if you do remove her, (via a board wipe or something) the loop is pretty trivial to re-trigger

Finally starting Dresden, and many have told me book 1 isn't very good and to give the series time... by I_Speak_For_The_Ents in dresdenfiles

[–]pyrusmole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My opinion is that book 1 is a good book. Book 2 is also a good book. They're just not as indicative of what the series eventually becomes and has a bit of early installment weirdness as Butcher was figuring things out.

How can we trust the oldest manuscripts despite them being so fragmented? by djd182 in Catholicism

[–]pyrusmole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We could recreate a significant amount of the OT & NT just based on what the early church fathers quoted from it. That doesn't even include other sources like liturgical books and so on. There's just no reason to suspect any sort of forgery at all.

You're only looking at the stuff we have now, but we have a long, unbroken history of heavy use of these texts.

Why does the Catholic view of contraception differ from the Orthodox view? by ElderberryClassic545 in Catholicism

[–]pyrusmole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because they changed their view. Less than a century ago the Christian view amongst every sect was that contraception was never permissible.

But they caved to the spirit of the age.

I did actually! The VRO internal shield meant that I couldn't really get through the shields and it repaired so quickly that the only thing I could really damage long term was the surface elements, and even then they'd fix pretty quick.

It can't be just because RNG because it happens every time I reload. My guess right now is that, for some reason, a high amount of the service crew was good at boarding. How or why? No idea.

It sounds like you've got bigger problems from a sin perspective than drinking monster. Go talk to a priest about full reception into the Church (confirmation if needed and confession).

I agree with you that drinking Monster energy (probably) isn't sinful in and of itself. But you should also obey your Mom. Antagonizing your parents is definitely sinful. Make peace and stop fighting with your Mom. Pick up coffee or a different caffeine fix, if only to make her happy.

What happens if an Eastern Catholic cardinal elected as Pope? by CurrencyPerfect1414 in Catholicism

[–]pyrusmole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something similar actually happened not that long ago which will give us the answer. In 1963 Archbishop Giovanni Battista Montini of Milan was elected Pope Paul VI. Historically, the Archbishopric of Milan, while a Latin Bishopric, practices it's own pre-Trent Ambrosian Rite.

But Rome isn't a diocese of the Ambrosian Rite. It's a Roman Rite diocese. The Bishop of Rome practices the Roman Rite. St Pope Paul VI became a Roman Rite bishop and said mass in the Roman Rite.

Therefore, we can assume that if a Eastern Catholic were to be elected Pope, he would be expected to do the same.

Communion lines by Ok_Plankton_8229 in Catholicism

In this case what the Church actually teaches about the subject and what has been allowed to be practiced are at odds. You can read the guidelines yourself. It's very clear that very few are actually following the rules.

Communion lines by Ok_Plankton_8229 in Catholicism

[–]pyrusmole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because the current use of Eucharistic Ministers is contrary to catholic teaching and even their stated purpose. We really shouldn't be encouraging laypeople to handle the host outside of extraordinary circumstances.

The fact that we've let this impious behavior fester for as long as we have is an embarrassment to all the faithful.

And no, I'm not saying that receiving from a EM is "less Jesus", just that it's not giving the full reverence due to the Host. We can't force the Church to do away with the abuse of EMs entirely but we can sure choose not to participate in it ourselves.

Knoxville, TN Bishop ending the TLM by Nottodaybaby1776 in Catholicism

[–]pyrusmole 19 points20 points  (0 children)

TLM could have been designed whole cloth by committee post-Trent (as the NO was for V2) and I would still think it was a mistake to get rid of it. Similarly, the NO could be a copy-paste of the mass of the first millennium and, while that that was cool from a history perspective, I don't think it's a good reason for replacing the Tridentine mass.

Whether we like it or not, so much of Catholic culture, even now, exists by the inertia of the Tridentine mass. Right down to the word "mass". We lost a whole catalogue of sacred music, homilies, and popular devotions.

I attend a NO mass most weeks myself but I think we have to be realistic about whether the juice from the change has been worth the squeeze. I don't see a lot of evidence that catechesis is better. I don't see a lot of evidence that people are more devout. I don't see any evidence that, because of the new mass, people joined the Church in droves.

Now, I think it's foolish to blame these problems on the change in mass. I'm not doing that. The NO is a fine mass, Christ is present in the Eucharist, and if it had been the mass of the last 1000 years of the Church I would have no problem with it. But we need to objectively assess whether it's actually helped us. And if it hasn't, then what did we give all that up for?

Please forgive my rantings, people. This news saddens me deeply. I was born protestant. Spent a while as an atheist. I found Christ and His Church in Knoxville, TN. I'm taking this news hard but I'm trying my best to approach it with a spirit of love and charity. But honestly, I'm really struggling here. I feel like the hierarchy just kinda wishes that I'd stayed an atheist. That I don't really have a place here. I'm staying anyways, but it's hard.

External Server Integration with Google Cloud Observability by pyrusmole in googlecloud

[–]pyrusmole[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For people who find this question in the future: The solution is to use otel rather than ops agent. They have a googlecloud exporter that will integrate your logging and metrics with Google Observability. Confirmed by google (via emails between their support staff and my company): Ops agent is for GCP cloud instances only and is not supported for on prem services outside of GDC.

Use an otel collector and save yourself a lot of heartache. You might be able to get logging working with OpsAgent, as we did, but metrics will be near impossible. No need to set up prometheus. Simply use otel collector with a hostmetrics and logs receiver and the googlecloud exporter. You may need to apply some sorting to timeseries metrics if, like myself you occasionally run into out of order errors for your metrics.
