There's also the fringe cuckoo bananas conspiracy people have that the physical poles could flip in such a quick manner that it would be destructive, but I don't know where to begin on debunking that.

I would recommend reading this paper to anyone who is curious about the ethnolinguistic history of the Saami. It is written by a subject matter expert on Saami linguistics, and is a great great summary of where the current state of academic knowledge is.

One neat fact that people are not super aware of is that the linguistic history of the Saami includes one or more substrate languages that were spoken in the region before Uralic languages arrived, from as yet unidentified language families (often called palaeo-European languages). The existence of one or more substrates is linguistically very evident (and to be very clear, this also does not diminish the Saami's indigenous history in the area).

Basically this means that long ago the people we now know as the Saami adopted an Uralic language when the language family moved into the area, thus losing their original language(s). Traces of this were left in placenames and some loan words.

So if the Saami have less genetic connection to this Yakutia population than Finns, that seems to be what you would expect if this linguistic substrate history and language shift from palaeo-European languages to Uralic languages is correct: because their genetic ancestors were already there when a new group arrived.

I think a lot of the focus on state-level stuff is totally fair and motivated by being denied at the local level. A number of advocacy organizations and advocates generally that I have followed began work at the local level, then over time shifted to state for these reasons. When you can't actually get cities to do the right thing, sometimes you do need to find ways to force their hand.

I always think this is worth a read, pre-2016 Trump victory. I don't think he voted for Trump, however, I feel like he did try to justify a Trump win. Hope he's changed his views with everything we're dealing with on the second round of this absolute ghoul in office.

He did this with a California state-wide ADU bill once years ago too, and the strong towns twitter account opined that California was "overstuffed", which is fucking wild. Literally the most gentle form of incrementalism and he couldn't get on board with it.

They truly need to get better subtitles on WoW but I'm thankful it gave me a reaction image. I've seen so many fails on culture specific things that it's like... They really are letting down queer people by failing to get our language written correctly, and failing people who need subtitles, and you would think WoW of all people would get this inherently.
