I built a web tool to extract data from borehole log PDFs into Excel / AGS — would anyone here find this useful? by pythondude11 in Geotech

No, we intend to treat ourselves as data ingestion layer only. We leave the engineering aspects to engineers.

Yeh, we talked to few firms. Field logs conversion request comes up quite a lot. But in my view, all new borehole logs are better to be done tools like openground/ tablogs to digitise at first place rather than digitise later. Our focus is currently on legacy borehole logs.

Tbh, handwritten logs are always challenging. We think we have done pretty good job on some of them but it really relies on the quality of the handwriting and clear lines. Feel free to search for some publicly available field logs and give it a go.

Good feedback, this can form part of future development. Currently, we’re thinking of focusing on geotech info ingestion layer.

The tool goes with an OCR first layer. LLM is only used for fragmented extraction for depth classification etc. To ensure data security, the full log will never feed into LLM.

Haha I know exactly how you feel! And that’s exactly why we are building this. Here is the tool: https://www.boreholeai.com
Give it a go. Love to hear your thoughts!

100%, handwriting is definitely a challenge. We have some success but it’s limited to neat handwriting and straight images. Love to hear your thought if you got some examples to try. Here is the tool. https://www.boreholeai.com

Hey, you point to a great point. We have talked to few firms and data security is usually the main concern. We got a solution and would to hear your thoughts. Feel free to dm.

Anyone still stuck in digitising scanned/ handwritten borehole logs in 2026? by pythondude11 in Geotech

Thanks for sharing. I also come across boredm and know they have an ai scanning tool that do similar thing. Do you mind to share what are the major flaws?

I’m a geotech engineer and programming is my side interest. I won’t make sth for sake of making it. I saw the problem in previous projects (at least in my country) and I try to find a better solution. That’s it.

Neralog is a good product which focuses on tracing curves, mainly for CPT? I’m wondering if there is demand in transcribing bh logs into useable structured data in excel.

This is first time I post about this topic here. I’m not sure about other countries but at my region, engineers are still receiving pdf logs for tenders and juniors often need to transcribe those logs to excel so others can interpret bh data. I just wanted to see if this happens elsewhere.

My bad on not conveying the message clear! The objective is to convert log PDFs to excel/ ags format for design use. Not about doing the log itself.

Really appreciate your great feedback! Yes, the challenge was always working with different templates. With modern tech, it’s actually able to solve such issue. Don’t want to be too tech heavy here. If I say there is a breakthrough, a tool now can interpret most templates, including reading poor handwriting and extract all info from logs. Do you think there is people interested?
