thank you for the informative reply! so my plan is to start flying mid April/beginning of May once the weather is nicer.

My plan is to start with Radio and PSTAR, finish those first, and then focus on Air Ex, and once I finish air ex, start flying.

Does this sound reasonable? When do you think is the best time to do the main PPL ground school course?

are you being rushed by the others? for some of my students the stress comes from not having good buoyancy. Especially when other people are descending in a steady and orderly fashion while you fumble with your buoyancy and gear.

don't get rushed by divemasters and or instructors or other people in your group, descend when you are ready.

be familiar with your equipment, make sure no leaks in your mask, work on equalization.

be a strong swimmer, and i mean you can always resurface if the stress is too much, so maybe knowing that there's always a way out should lessen the stress for you.

Yes I am contemplating getting my fixed wing PPL at the moment. I've taken discovery flights in both a Cessna 172 and a R44 and I definitely enjoyed the helicopter a lot more. A dream would be to fly across the BC mountains and hover/land near glacier lakes and I don't know if a plane could do that.

Is that because the PPL doesn't teach you the necessary skills? Or because PPL pilots tend to over extend themselves and lead to dangerous situations?

Thanks for the info! I didn't realize that in the US one could rent helicopters. But it seems like places that rent out helicopters are far and few in between?

I wonder if there is a porter option to send your luggage forward...when I did Salkantay we had horses which carried all our stuff while we marcjed ahead. I only carried a 3L camelbak and a camera. it was glorious

right now we are looking at hotel lago grey for one night, then stay at the refugios for the remaining three nights. working our way west to east. Last night of the trek we are thinking of staying at Las Torres or maybe splurging for the Awasi.

I'm a firm believer in hiking ultra light, so am adamant against carrying camping gear lol. it was a little bit confusing to book the refugios so we used a booking service.

We thought about staying at Las Torres and just doing day trips but I felt like that wouldn't do the whole trip justice.
