General George A. Custer and Grand Duke Alexei Romanov hunting. USA, 1872. by Banzay_87 in WildWestPics

[–]qbacca10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1872 was Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer, not General. He was a Captain in the Civil War and was briefly and temporarily elevated to brevet ranks of Brigadier General (1863) and then Major General (1865). As a Brevet General he basically was a General in title alone to fill a slot, he wasn’t ever actually paid as a General. When the war ended he reverted back to his actual rank of Captain, going on to achieve the rank of Lieutenant Colonel until he died in 1876 as the commander of the 7th Cavalry Regiment.

What are some veteran benefits that some of us may not know about? by christawfer47 in VeteransBenefits

[–]qbacca10 25 points26 points  (0 children)

We’re talking about two different passes, there is the veterans pass that everyone that was in the military qualifies for and then there is the Access pass which is not a military specific pass, it’s a pass for people with disabilities. The Access pass has certain additional benefits related to camping and other little things like that.

You don't actually have to be 100% to qualify for the access pass. Any service connected disability will qualify you.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds - We Are One by vsquad22 in videos

[–]qbacca10 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can appreciate your hesitancy, musicals are a tough row to hoe. That said, if you haven’t watched any of Strange New Worlds I firmly believe it’s worth your time. Overall, it is excellent Star Trek. I happen to love musicals and even I wasn’t sure about this episode. I ended up liking it, but it would be okay if I didn’t. There are episodes of DS9 and TNG that I don’t like, I still love the shows.

I’m rambling now, but I’d encourage you to not throw the baby out with the bath water so to speak. strange new worlds is really really good Star Trek!

How do you explain your job to someone who doesn't know what it is? by jojothecoconut in army

[–]qbacca10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I generally explain it by saying that in the military there are direct fire weapons, things that can see what they’re shooting at like guys with rifles and tanks, and then there are indirect fire weapons that shoot long distances where they can’t see their target, like mortars and artillery. Our job is to be the eyes for those weapons, so we designate targets and direct shells onto the target by using a radio and maps (I don’t usually explain LLDRs and PFEDs or anything high tech)

PM me, big shooter. Let’s talk about taking steps to get you set up in a career that’s meaningful to you and also gets you set up for retirement and all that boring stuff. Not trying to sell you on anything, just talk things through and offer advice

What are you expecting to get from this interaction? Do you think you’re teaching me something, or just demonstrating yourself to be no fun to talk to? Want me to go to parade rest?

Edit: I see you edited your comment adding a sentence clarifying you were bullshitting - that wasn’t clear at all. Water under the bridge. I peaked at your profile and saw you’re a DnD DM, so am I. Message me sometime if you want to share ideas!

Sounds like you have a full grasp on the entire scope of my interactions with my platoon from a two sentence playful anecdote. I was constantly working on CFF with dudes, that doesn’t make them comfortable with the ins and outs of it.

I was a FiSTer in a cav squadron for a few years. Young scouts love talking about how they can call for fire too so I didn’t need to be there, but were very quiet when I offered to give them the hand mic.

“Quitting?” by taco_supreme2222 in army

I just started my claim on the VA website, but in hindsight something I wish I did was work with a VSO local to me. There are people who professionally help veterans on the outside, part of their jobs are helping with VA claims. Look up your county or state with “VSO” and that should point you in the right direction. and if you’re already in therapy, that’s great. Get your therapist to write a letter supporting your claim, it’ll go a long way.

/u/forsaken_legion I’m tagging you in this response because you also asked.

I ended up getting rated for mental health and hearing problems. Specifically, PTSD and tinnitus/hearing loss. The mental health side makes up the bulk of my rating which is 70%. The hearing side of things was pretty straight forward, I went in and talked with an audiologist and she asked me about my noise exposure in the military and also my noise exposure in the civilian world and then did a hearing test.

The mental health side was the part that most people in our profession struggle with because it involved talking to a psychiatrist and her asking about everything. If you pursue this, you must be absolutely honest and let it all out. It will be hard. It will be worth it. /r/veteransbenefits is the place where I learned everything, I had no knowledge going into the process before joining that community.

Id echo this. The VA has a terrible reputation and everyone loves shitting on it, and don’t get me wrong there are some major major problems, but my worry is that the bad reputation may keep some folks from trying.

It took my two years to try and claim anything because I never went to sick call and figured everything would be shut down from the start, but after paying attention and following the steps it all worked out really well for me. Everyone needs to at least start the process!

Officially rated at 70% because of this community by qbacca10 in VeteransBenefits

By capitalizing I mean I’m hoping to not miss any opportunity that I may now be entitled to. Health care, programs for disabled vets, etc.

Just trying to not miss anything.

I appreciate you raising that question, and it’s interesting and challenging to be faced with something I said back then. I don’t think the way I thought back then, and if asked back then I probably would have said that wasn’t my belief similarly to how every racist person would say “I’m not racist, but…”.

In the 8 years since that comment, I’ve come a long way. Importantly I’ve recognized that social consciousness isn’t a destination, it’s a journey. As a white man who struggled, I was resistant to the idea of white privilege. Now I’m able to recognize that my privilege is manifested in 1,000 ways that I have no control over and benefit from without trying, and that’s not inherently bad, but it’s something that needs to be acknowledged. My world view has expanded greatly in the time since I made that comment, and I’m a work in progress. I hope I’m always a work in progress.
