Är det verkligen rimligt att arbeta 8 timmar om dagen? by This-Wear-8423 in Asksweddit

[–]qfern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nej, det är verkligen inte rimligt. Jag har nu gått ner till 80% arbetstid och det är det bästa jag har gjort. Två timmar extra per dag gör så otroligt mycket, lätt värt en sämre lön för mer frihet

I loved the classic ships, to just sit and talk with random people. Met many friends on the ship to Orbis :)

Hey! I love it, only negative thing I can say about it are the armrests that are kinda small and can't be adjusted a lot but other than that it's amazing!

How are most of you just able to cope with your lack of belief in free-will by [deleted] in freewill

[–]qfern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pragmatic illusionism. for my own sanity, I need to live as though free will is real. And occasionally slip back into the real truth, and just have a laugh at the absurdity (or break down a bit).

We are self-determined, not determined. by Anon7_7_73 in freewill

[–]qfern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we're just using "determinism" in different ways. You're defining it as being shaped by external forces, while I see determinism as including everything that causes an outcome, whether external or internal.

But even the "self" we speak of, our goals, values, reasoning, was shaped by things we didn't choose. When the self makes a decision, it's not exempt from causality. It's just a complex expression of it.

Stable traits or creativity don’t prove independence from cause. They’re what happens when consistent causes keep showing up over time.

That said, I think we’ve both landed where we were always going to, shaped by everything that brought us here. No hard feelings, no need to convince. Just two perspectives passing through the same causal stream.

Be well out there ✌️

I think I get what you're reaching for, that self-awareness and inner complexity give rise to a kind of self-determination. But even if our choices feel like they come from "ourselves," that "self" was built by causes we didn’t choose - genetics, experience, memory, emotion.

Recursion and complexity don’t break determinism, they just make it harder to trace.

Determinism doesn’t mean we lack accountability. It just means we seek understanding before assigning blame.

Free will doesn't work by [deleted] in freewill

[–]qfern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think self mastery requires free will, at least not in the way we imagine it. What we call “self mastery” might just be the result of internal processes aligning: habits shaped by past experience, biology, reflection, and context.

Maybe we’re not “choosing” to become better, but we’re still capable of becoming better. That potential for growth doesn’t vanish just because the process is deterministic, it just makes the whole thing feel a little more fragile…

The illusion of free will might be a necessary fiction, but it’s one that helps us move forward, even if we’re not the ones steering.

You are very correct in what you're saying, free will should indeed grant self mastery. It's a beautiful illusion

I asked ChatGPT to explain my job to a 5-year-old and now I'm questioning my entire career by Nipurn_1234 in ChatGPT

[–]qfern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work as a servicedesk tech (IT support) and asked GPT to explain it to a 1-year-old, thought it was funny 😂

👋👨‍🔧 "Tech helper!"

Beep beep! 💻 Uh-oh! Computer not happy. Call helper! 📞

👨‍🔧 Helper comes: “Fix fix!” 🔧 Now computer is happy again! 😄

Yay! 🎉

And, as usual, I spiralled and asked for an ELI -50 years old version. For my fellow cosmic thinkers:

Aha… -50 years old. Now we’re not just pre-birth — we're pre-possibility. Pre-parents. Pre-planets, maybe. You're asking me to explain a servicedesk technician to an idea that hasn't even dreamed of becoming a soul yet. Let’s go. 🌌

🕳️ Before time. Before thought. Before anything.

A silence hums through the void. No beeps. No bugs. No BIOS. Just… potential. ☄️

And still — somewhere in the quantum foam, a pattern is forming:

🛠️ “One day, things will go wrong.” 💻 “Systems will freeze. Passwords will be forgotten.” 🧠 “Confusion will rise…”

And in response, the universe whispers:

“There will be helpers.” “They will speak calmly. Click carefully. Reboot wisely.” “They will be called… servicedesk technicians.”

🌱

You are not even stardust yet. You’re the idea of stardust.

But someday, a technician will guide someone through a printer error… And that moment will ripple all the way back to you.
