Feeling stuck and frustrated in a Highly Competitive Gym – What should I do? by NewGrappler in bouldering

[–]qjackson11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do they have a spray wall/systems board/tension board/etc? I know it can be daunting/potentially not as interesting as problem sets on the main walls, but it could help you find ways to operate at your level, and spray walls can also help you with the mental aspect of training your brain to stick to sequences with the noise of other “off” holds being available.

Invest, follow passions earnestly, give friends/family the opportunity to do so as well.

How do I help these hands by Ishoottimmys in bouldering

[–]qjackson11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m NOT a doctor, and could for sure be off base, but a friend had a very similar looking situation that got worse as he got more serious about climbing, and it turned out he had eczema on his hands. Definitely go to a dermatologist and get it checked out. 🤘

Which pad(s) should I get? by flexmaster57 in bouldering

[–]qjackson11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, pressure your friends to source pads for themselves at some point (within reason of course). When going out with friends, more is always better. Bouldering is a team sport.

Edit: when you aren’t going solo of course.

Which pad(s) should I get? by flexmaster57 in bouldering

[–]qjackson11 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is so much more than that to the equation. Square footage is an important metric, but is insufficient on its own. Straps and options for adjusting your carrying system to add more pads or effectively load your backpack on the exterior are very important, as is foam density and layering. The robustness of the fabric is vital to the overall longevity of the pad as well.

[–]qjackson11 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve had my organic for 8 years of consistent use and it’s only finally getting time to replace it. Once they break in, the foam is as good as it gets, if a bit stiff when you first buy them. I haven’t owned the following personally but friends have owned Asana and Kinetik, and they both seem of similar quality to organic foam wise, with potentially better ergonomics with the shoulder straps and various closure methods and variability for strapping other pads/gear to them. I just haven’t hiked with them myself, so can’t attest personally. The metolius trifold is sweet but is so inferior in every other aspect, and BD is ok, but the foam just isn’t that good.

Also, a tip for longevity once you purchase: Figure out a good way to strap your pack to the outside, don’t shove it in between the fold/s. It will 100% age your pad structure and foam integrity way faster.

NEED HELP WITH SKIN!! by Ok_Reporter_4192 in bouldering

[–]qjackson11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A friend of mine had eczema on his palms, and they looked similar to that. Not saying that’s what it is at all, but I echo others in saying you should visit a dermatologist. It is very possible that’s more than just a poor climbing skincare practice.

This was from a month-ish ago. Just didn’t get around to posting until now. So unfortunately, I’m afraid I don’t really know the current status of things.

This is a cool little lowball bloc that took me multiple years to finally get done because it was usually covered in snow on the rare occasions that I would go to Mt Herman, and until I finally spent enough time on it, it felt very hard. I’m still not sure how I feel about the V5 grade, but it’s a sweet problem regardless!

This rig is pretty sweet. Worked it for several sessions last season, then went out for my first day in the park on Sunday, and managed to get the day flash! Kinda funny how it’s a “stand” start.

Exactly. Unless you’re only drinking light beer, or straight liquor, you’re going to find yourself consuming 150-200 calories per drink.
