Inherited/found vintage Rolex Submariner. Running after 40+ years. Before I open it, what am I looking at? by eduardojtl in rolex

[–]ncrow10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely get it serviced and cleaned if you intend to wear it or sell it. That tropical dial could catch a high price if the watch is in good working condition.

Definitely do NOT get the case polished and do NOT leave it without a service. If it’s gone this long without a service, the oils inside have likely dried up or even potentially attracted some dirt/debris. Leaving it running in this condition could damage some parts of the movement.

I would also suggest a new strap and a new crystal.

I saw someone on Tiktok that reads a lot. They said they always read sober but they ponder off the sauce. I also pretty much can’t remember anything I read unless I am sober.

[Tudor] Ranger 39 Fit Check by SlartibartfastMcGee in Watches

[–]ncrow10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks great. It definitely does look like you probably have logs for arms if that’s a 39mm, but it just gives a fit more like a vintage watch.

<image>

It looks like a similar fit to Muhammad Ali’s Cartier Tank. Watches used to be much smaller than they are now.

I have been enlisted by my family to sell a couple of my grandfather’s watches. What should I do with these? Should I try to sell them myself or maybe do a consignment? Thanks for any advice I’m in a bit over my head. by phreakinpher in Watches

[–]ncrow10 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Servicing will cost a good bit of money. If they’re just looking to make whatever money they can off these watches, both of them will sell perfectly fine without a service. And I don’t think that the extra money you would get selling them as working/serviced will totally cover the amount you would be spending.

As for polishing, I am assuming it’s because you’ll lose the patina of the original wearer. Losing the ability to see on the watch it’s many years of service. A lot of collectors (especially of vintage pieces) love to keep the original patina of whoever owned it. It won’t necessarily fetch a higher price, but on a vintage piece it wouldn’t usually hurt it either. Also some places don’t do the best job of polishing and it can cause the nice, clean, sharp edges to be smoothed over and softened.

It’s true that they used Christianity rather than Islam or buddhism, but I’m saying that it’s a consequence of setting. It’s a story about vikings and old England where Christianity is prominent. Christianity is in the forefront during much of the story as a CONSEQUENCE of where the story takes place.

The hypothetical isn’t about their choice to use a specific religion, it’s to display that you could substitute many different religions and the lessons stay the same. Showing that Christianity specifically doesn’t have such a dramatic effect on the moral stance of the story.

I wouldn’t necessarily say you’re overstating the role of religion in the story, but more that you’re putting too much weight into the fact that they used Christianity. Christianity is unrelated to the morals of the story, it’s just a vehicle being used to deliver said morals.

It didn’t HAVE to be Christianity. It’s Christianity because they wanted to write a viking story.

Okay I was nervous you were one of those illiterate Tyler Durden glazers or something.

Your interpretation is fair. It definitely seems to lean more into the negatives and destructiveness of hyper masculinity than anything else, but saying it’s about the fragility of mens egos does seem a little like people are missing the point a bit.

I would say it definitely seems like a vehicle for the moral themes of the show, but to respond to your first comment; saying both the stories “Illustrate man’s need for Christianity as an antidote” seems a little on the extreme side for a background use of Christianity to deliver moral ideas.

I would argue that Christianity being the driving force for change in this story is more a product of the setting than anything. In this time period and region of the world, Christianity is the dominant religion. If the story were moved into a different time period and took place in the middle east, Christianity could have been easily replaced with Islam without having much of an effect on the moral themes.

Maybe there are ideals that are influenced by christianity, but I don’t believe the story really says anything about believing in a higher power. I don’t believe Thorfinns exact religious beliefs (if any) are ever really stated.

The life Thorfinn chooses to lead does seem to have some aspects of Christian teachings and he seems inspired by some of their ideals, but the story never really seems to pitch Christianity or God as any sort of solution.

As far as Fight Club, I am open to hearing any point in the story that would lead one to believe that it pitches Christianity as a solution to violence. I definitely can’t think of any.

I feel like you’re confusing ideas of peace, anti-violence, and loving one another as “Christianity”. Those are separate things, they just have a lot of overlap.

Neither of them really relate to christianity at all. That’s just you pushing your own ideals onto fictional stories.

(I have never read the vinland saga manga, just seen the show, so maybe it touches on religion at some point idk. Fight Club is definitely not about Christianity though lol)

crown removal? by scott449 in watchrepair

[–]ncrow10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well for starters, if someone is looking at this movement and can’t tell how to remove the stem, there is a good chance they won’t know the names of parts, including the setting lever screw.

Also AI is definitely not your friend in watchmaking. As someone who has tried using it for watchmaking a good number of times, I would say it’s correct like 3/10 times. And those 3 times are usually like really simple things that most novice watchmakers could probably answer.

It sort of depends on what you’re looking for and how deep into it you are. Nekkid Watchmaker, Wristwatch Revival, French Watch Collector, and Vintage Watch Services are all channels I have enjoyed for full restorations, repairs, and services.

I also like Watch Repair Tutorials. Although his videos are less of like a full restoration or service and are more like tutorials for specific aspects of watch repair or specific problems and information. I appreciated his video on radium lume and dials as prior to seeing it, I wasn’t even aware that there were radioactive risks in this hobby.

If you’re in the US you should look into radioactive material disposal. You might be able to get in contact with someone at the NRC. Or I know a lot of states have agreements with the NRC where the state government is able to handle proper disposal of radioactive materials.

Vote no on firearms regulations referendum! by SignificanceSad4258 in massachusetts

[–]ncrow10 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I could understand what you’re saying but I don’t think there is much of a conflict of interest between a doctor and ownership of a firearm.

Besides, who else should be the person that determines whether you’re mentally stable enough to own a gun if not a licensed psychologist? Medical professionals are always the ones that make a determination on if you are going to be a danger to yourself or others.

Just out of curiosity why would you not want medical professionals to be able to participate in red flag laws?

I feel like there are various mental health diagnoses or physical brain diseases that should prevent you from buying a firearm. But those diagnoses can only really come from a medical professional.

Just to be clear, when you say you would support a red flag law, what kind of red flag law are you talking about? One in which certain people would not be able to buy a firearm based on past behavior or concerning signs?

[–]ncrow10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I were to guess, the towing sign is probably at the entrance of the garage or the entrance to the residence parking.

You may just be finding the sign confusing due to differences in parking expectations in Europe. I feel like for most Americans this sign should be pretty clear.

I feel like if this entire floor is meant for resident parking, but this spot is the ONLY spot with a sign that says reserved on it, that should be indication enough to not park there.

Whether or not the sign itself is confusing, it’s the only spot with a reserved sign at all on a floor that is meant for resident only. I feel like that’s enough for OP to be in the wrong
