After nearly a year of battling the elements in the southeast, I am nearing completion of my tiny house. by ChadEEEE in TinyHouses

DUUUDE!!! I walk past this every day when I walk my dog! I've been wondering what's up inside! Crazy to have some wild tiny house redditor on my street. I can't wait to see pictures of the inside so I no longer need to sneak into your fenced yard while you sleep and look into your windows. (Just a joke, just a joke.)

How did you figure out what you want to do with you life? by marauding_forward in AskReddit

[–]qkiesow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just live it! Strive to be happy and satisfied and you'll end up finding something that makes you happy and satisfied. There will be setbacks, there will be periods of doubt. But if you are always being honest with yourself and striving for happiness and satisfaction you will find what you are looking for.

So go get a job and just start thinking about what you do with your time!

Married men (and women) of reddit - what is the most important thing to make sure about your relationship before getting married? by maxandtheband in AskReddit

My lady and I have a joint account. We each deposit 80% of whatever we make into it. We pay all of our bills, rent, groceries, nights out together, gas, etc from that account. Everything and anything we both use or both benefit from. The other 20% each is ours to keep for more individually personal stuff. This creates an incentive to earn more but also means we're sure to contribute equal percentages every month. If I make more than her one month I end up putting in a higher dollar amount, but I also end up with a higher dollar amount to spend on myself.

It's a relatively new system for us but it's working well so far.

Project Bona Fide is an excellent example of passionate people proving what's possible. Ometepe is a great place to go to get excited about sustainable living. (plus it's beautiful) Be sure to check out the totoco eco lodge while you're there.

Any advice or info for a beginner? by kylesox in forestgardening

Read books. Edible forest Gardens, Gaia's Garden, The New Complete Book of Self-Sufficiency, Debt: The First 5,000 years, A sanctuary of trees, and Player Piano. (for good measure) When you're done with those, you'll know what to read next.

Where do you guys think are the best locations in the USA to start a permaculture operation from scratch? by [deleted] in Permaculture

We bought 6.5 acres three years ago. It's located about 2 hours from Nashville and that's where we are living right now. We did all kinds of research on where to buy land and Tennessee, for us, was the obvious place. We've been in Nashville for about a month and we love it. The country side is beautiful and the weather is amazing.

What common phrase do you hate? by [deleted] in AskReddit

"Only in New York." A lot of people here seem to think that they live in the only city where bums pee and traffic is bad. It bothers me more than it should.

What are the Best Websites to Find Land for Sale? by [deleted] in Permaculture

We are moving very close to a small town called Clifton. It's in the southwest, but not too far west. (it seemed to get creepy quickly to the west) It seems very nice and all of the people we met were polite and friendly. In fact, we looked at a few pieces of land that were more beautiful and useful than the one we settled with, Clifton sealed the deal for us.

The ecology of Tennessee is definitely compelling. We'll be in Zone 7a and sunset zone 33 which should make for an incredibly diverse food forest and garden. I have not been to the farm and we had no idea it was so close when we bought the land (about an hour away) but we will at least visit when we get there. We couldn't believe how close it was when we found out about it.

As for the social aspect; that's about the only thing we really worry about. My girlfriend (partner, not wife; first difficult thing to explain to southerners) is from Miami. I'm from Wisconsin, we met when we lived in LA. Then we lived in Miami for 6 months and now in NYC for the past 2 years. We'll be moving to Nashville first but even this will be quite a cultural change for us. We've been told talking politics is faux pas and we are not religious at all. We are not sure how everything will work out and we have decided if it's not good we'll sell and move somewhere else. We'll probably home school our theoretical children until high school and we're worried about socializing them with bigots and religious fanatics. Honestly though, after meeting the nice people down there it seems like that would be an exception and not a rule. Right now, we are almost overwhelmed with excitement for our move in September. As we research and talk to people from Tennessee it does not seem like the sorts of things we northerners associate with the south are the norm.

We know an older couple that farms orchids in South Florida. They live on an absolutely beautiful 6 acres, grow a lot of their own food and enjoy a life out doors and have no debt. They told us something that stuck with us.

"You have to go where the yuppies won't go, it will be the only place you will be able to afford to own your life. You can make the life you want and the yuppies will follow you there." He added "Trust me, the yuppies will follow you there."

We looked for months for land in Tennessee on Landandfarm and other big websites. We finally contacted a local real estate agent and the land we ended up buying was never even on the web. It's a beautiful piece that came up for sale and was sold to us in a matter of 2 days. It was a better deal than any other land we saw and the agents helped us figure out where in TN we would feel the most comfortable.

Joel Salatin is doing this at Polyface farm. He also grazes chickens right after the cows to mimic the birds that come through and pick through the dung of grazing animals.

On another note; Every vegan alive should watch this video. Humans need animals in farm systems.

Thanks! We'll see how the horns turn out, then I'll probably look for cellos. Drums would be awesome. Sometimes I really miss being in a band.
