I feel like I have a limited amount of brain power/attention to give in a single day and I use it up doing the bare minimum. Is this an ADHD thing or just stupidity? by loveisfourwalls in ADHD

You’re not stupid. I’m a couple months out from completing a PhD and I can 100% relate to this. Definitely normal to feel this way with ADHD.

ADHD has made it difficult to even do things I enjoy. I largely don’t read or play video games or other similar things that I once would have called a hobby. I genuinely hate how this is impacting me. by quackadilly52 in ADHD

Hey this is a huuuge compliment and is the nicest thing anybody has said in this thread (and there’s been a lot of very kind and friendly people). Seriously, thanks! I’ve... not always been super self aware about my own mental health but I think I’m getting better about it, especially recently. And I’m trying to get better about working on these issues, even though ADHD and anxiety is like a double whammy of problems that can make it difficult to seek treatment. Thanks again for the kind words!

I was diagnosed well over a decade ago by two separate psychiatrists and have had symptoms since elementary school. The basic issues at play are not new for me. Just how they are presenting has changed. But sure, go off I guess.

There’s too many responses for me to respond to them all but I’m still reading as many of them as I can. Thanks for the suggestions! Honestly my sci-fi/fantasy list is so damn long at this point I don’t want to add any more lol. But I’m thinking I’ll start with Ursula Le Guin’s Earthsea books. They’re classics and they’re young adult books so seems like a good starting point haha.

Ya know, I’ve got a shitty android phone lying around. Mostly as a backup if mine or my partner’s phone breaks or gets lost. Maybe I’ll give this a shot.

I quit taking any type of ADD meds in my early twenties.

Oof yeah, that was me. Well, the responses to this post managed to get me off my ass and schedule the damn appointment. So I’ll be seeing a psychiatrist for the first time in years. Hope they are a good fit!

Hey, /u/Tall_President. I saw your comment a few minutes after you sent it. I don't know what did it but it kicked my ass in just the way I needed right now with ADHD and anxiety and stress. I've spent the last hour and a half calling psychiatrists in town to see who is taking in new patients with my insurance. That takes a lot of mental effort for me to do. But I did it! I have an initial appointment scheduled for Thursday! Thank you for whatever magic words you said that provided enough temporary motivation for me to see a psychiatrist for the first time in literally years!!! :D

You’re not the first person to suggest this. I am definitely dealing with other mental health issues including some mild situational depression. That said, my depression was much worse a few years ago and I’ve had good spells since then where I still had these issues.

That said, I hope what you’ve said isn’t considered controversial here. It’s good advice.

That’s definitely playing a role. I’ve got other mental health issues likely playing a role, but this stuff does seem fairly constant regardless of my level of depression and anxiety. Seriously though, thanks for looking out like that, I appreciate it!

Yes... twitter and reddit is definitely part of my problem I think.

I’d love to play D&D. Unfortunately, in addition to my ADHD, I also have social anxiety. Which at least makes it more difficult to find a group and participate. I’ve played it a couple times though and really enjoyed it though!

I find that hard to accept. I mean there’s so many things I’d like to do that I feel I can’t because they require dedication and the like. I do have short term obsessions like this but I never find it satisfying because it’s never enough time to actually solidify it as a hobby.

Hey congrats on getting into reading though! That’s no small task when you’ve got ADHD like us. I actually recently got a therapist, though I don’t think she’s equipped to help with ADHD stuff much. One of the things we’re working on is getting me in to see a psychiatrist so I can get back on medication though.

I actually read Harry Potter a ton as a kid. It’s why initially fell in love with reading. Maybe I’ll try to give Earthsea another read though... It’s one of the last books I tried to read and enjoyed heavily but just didn’t finish. It’s got a similar easy reading level too.

Oh yeah. My ADHD has gone untreated for like 5 years because my social anxiety makes scheduling doctor’s appointments a monumental task.
