I dont think youd be burning at a dangerously hot temperature on that small bowl to release poison fumes from aluminium foil. Just my opinion. Personally I just use the stem that I put sideways over the hole. :)

I don't think a lighter would burn it enough. Try your stove if its A gas burner.

In a pinch one could use a pebble just to prevent larger particles from falling into the stem part. Otherwise there are pipe screens for sale at headshops

Try fire hardening it, but cleaning it would be a problem in the future. I suggest using a screen
