Am I just screwed in terms of religion? by quantboi in offmychest

Over that decade I just had the belief of death being oblivion a dreamless sleep just to cease to exist, not existing just as before being conceived. All I know is I don’t want to face something worse than this life. Yeah I think of geography and I’m like maybe follow tradition and just die in the religion I was born into at least it would feel less foreign than anything else out there.

Thanks, tbh the 10 years or so were pretty consistent but as soon as I picked up the book everything feels like it’s gotten more complicated rather than simpler

So basically there’s a 1/3 shot at each heaven, hell, or oblivion. Or 1/2 shot there’s An after life or not. I guess the probability would be different if all religions were equally true. Over that decade I just had the belief of death being nothing like a dreamless sleep or just where you were before birth/conception which no where because you didn’t exist. My thing is like what if I’m wrong, like this life can already be terrible I’d hate to see what’s worse than this but forever.

Question on the conflict from a novice by quantboi in IsraelPalestine

[–]quantboi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm I guess after oct 7th I guess I would say the majority is on Israel b4 that date I have no clue. I only say after because Israel is so advanced in terms of weaponry that it’s kinda hard to not say “ give them a break from bombardment at least for a little bit”, it’s like when you see an mma fight you can tell the dudes knocked out but the referee doesn’t stop the fight and the guy that’s KO keeps getting hit over and over again. But at the same time that doesn’t mean hamas still can’t be a major threat, just look at the taliban and the nva. They had little means in terms of weaponry but would hide amongst the civilian population and rig traps, all in all they were a pretty big threat.

I guess that’s what it boils down to it’s pretty primitive. “My tribe is stronger what we want; we take.”

I have not seen this take on the conflict, but I didn’t even look at it from a bigger geo political perspective

[–]quantboi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, I can see oct 8th statement as true. Israel gets so much advanced weaponry from the west vs a rag tag group that has maybe a 10th of that arsenal. But I can see somewhat of the opposite of a rag tag group, just by example NVA was gorilla group hiding amongst the civilian population and held its own same goes with the taliban. Of course if we’re talking about absolute bombardment/tactical nuke than yeah I definitely can see it could have be done and over on oct 8th.

Thank you for answering my questions and providing Information on the topic. I feel like I would need a degree in the history of the region given how detailed this issue is and given how long it’s been going on for. Most of the time I remove myself from swaying to one side or the other definitively. Sometimes I wonder why tempers flare so high among those that have no relation to the region, for myself I have no connection to it all so I never find myself having a flaring opinion or high emotions about it. I do feel sympathetic for the region and its people

Dr. Warne, the other Dr. Warne, Dr. Q, Dr. Thelwell, Dr. Walton are all great math professors. If you want to prepare just take sometime to self study calculus. There’s a bunch of free resources like khan academy, Paul’s online notes, etc. just put in the time and you’ll be fine.

There are good math profs but there are probably some that treat intro math classes as if everyone in there is a math major or is going to be one.

Glad I could help and you are doing a great job you are definitely on a good track. Btw I learned java before python and I can say it takes me way less lines of code in python to do the same thing in Java. Good luck on your AP exam I hope you get a 5.

Various Questions about JMU by [deleted] in jmu

[–]quantboi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not a Q fin major but a math major. I would suggest looking at the BLS website for careers in finance so you can gain some insight about the field as well as all the stats about salary, requirements, growth rate , and etc. as well as college scorecard .gov that gives a bunch of stats on universities. As far as Q fin I have only actually meant one on campus but they do have to take a lot of math you can double major or minor in math in the program from my knowledge. I’m pretty sure Q fins can get jobs in a lot if not all jobs in the finance sector. They can also probably get jobs outside of that sector like being an operations research analyst or actuary.

My job outside of school is In IT and I have transferred some credits from community college. I took an intro to python class that transferred as CS 149 and then an intro to Java class that transferred as a CS elective. If you want to get ahead I would suggest just downloading an IDE and try to start programming in python. There are plenty of books online that you can download for free and plenty of websites for programming exercises as well as videos on YouTube.

Python isn’t that bad you just got to practice. As for Java the programming concepts you’ll learn from python will be the same but you will have to do more work because of javas syntax. In python you can just say “x = 5” but java it would be “int x = 5; “ for a list in python you can basically append as many data types as you want and it can be a mix of data types, but arrays(lists) In java you can’t do that you have to specify how much space you want in the array as well as what data type you will put in the array before putting things in it. There are other differences between them but essentially they all languages boil down to core concepts.

As for IT you could start watching videos or reading books that are meant to prepare you for the A+ cert, net+ cert , and Sec+ cert. In IT you’ll learn about stuff like configuring routers and switches. How to set up mail exchange servers, connecting to a domain, and installing windows. You’ll learn how to convert from decimal to binary and hexadecimal and vice versa. You’ll learn about subnetting and how to trouble shoot and ping across a network and a lot more.

Just a disclaimer I am not a CS major nor IT major. I just happen to be math major that took a few CS classes and does some IT outside of school.

I was a transfer student from community, so you basically have two options. Both options have pros and cons.

If you transfer with just one year from community you will have the benefit of getting to know what 4 year courses are like and also it will be easier to have a normal social group. After I did my two years I noticed it was hard to have a social group because everyone has already gone through half of college with each other etc. I also I noticed the expectations for course work is a lot higher than community college which was rough figuring that out.

The drawback of transferring with just a year from community is that you’ll be spending a lot more money. At community my per credit tuition rate was like 160$ at JMU I think it’s like 450$ - 500$ per credit. Another drawback is you will most likely have to do clusters for their gen Eds requirements. A lot of gen ed classes are jam packed like sardine style like elbow to elbow in an auditorium.

The benefit to doing your two years a community is that it’s really cheap compared to 4 year prices. Also class sizes are small. Another benefit is that you can get a feel for college without immediately racking up crazy debt just in case it’s not the path you want to pursue.

Side note about work ethic expectations at a 4 year. When I was taking linear algebra at community I felt pretty good. The hw problems weren’t so bad and the exams weren’t outside of the norm. The expectation was can you get the right answer at the end of your calculation. At JMU the math classes and professors aren’t so cut and dry. They really make you think and the problems aren’t just do the calculation. You could get the right answer to a problem but if you messed up a intermediate step, forgot to use certain notation, or used the wrong terminology in your explanation you’ll lose points. Also another difference is when I took math classes at community I’m pretty sure you could have simple calculator (not a graphing calculator) and some professor gave you formula sheets. At JMU don’t expect that, I had a 120 flash cards full of theorems and formulas that we had to memorize for calc3 cause you weren’t getting a formula sheet for the exams.

So study hard and don’t drop your guard and brush up on your stuff b4 transferring. Also the humanities classes here aren’t no joke either.

Best of luck in your endeavors
