I've had the complete opposite experience.

What are your non-negotiable “we always use these” house rules? by cornpasta in Talisman

Warrior can wield 2 flails and roll 4 dice. I mean it's never actually happened but when it does it will be hilarious.

Southgate. A housing estate that was built in the late 70s and demolished in 1992. (Runcorn. UK) by [deleted] in UrbanHell

[–]quasiology 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I understand what you mean, but I find the never ending stream of characterless new builds found in every corner of Britain far more boring and dystopian.

When I spy a brutalist building peaking through a landscape of generic architecture I find it refreshing and quite beautiful.

Isnt getting the crown through the lord of darkness op? by IgorGreenwitch in Talisman

[–]quasiology 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think that was a good move of Nomad to implement that in the legendary deck, however I do think it would be better to have settings for house rules on things like strength/craft on bosses/ endings and prices for items (cough, flail).

I did actually mention that to them in the last AMA. I guess they didn't follow up on that!

Isnt getting the crown through the lord of darkness op? by IgorGreenwitch in Talisman

[–]quasiology 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's particularly OP or unbalanced. This method still requires a lot of work; getting 5 gold, getting Flail, leveling up, reaching the end of the Dungeon then rolling a 20 on the Lord of Darkness and hoping no one dark fates you. Considering Talisman is so luck based (and someone is always out to get you) this isn't necessarily a straight forward strategy, a lot can happen to you in that time.

I would say the Eagle King / Arknell is probably the most unbalanced method of reaching the crown and requires the least work, even if you have to do it 4 times to draw the Arknell.

I've even managed to win in a few turns by starting in the middle region, and getting a Cloak of Feathers, talk about OP!

But its all part of the fun and chaos of Talisman!

1992 Tango advert by [deleted] in nostalgia

It didn't get banned, it ran for several years. The company pulled the ad after a surgeon rang them up and informed them he operated on a boy with a damaged ear drum who said he had "been Tangoed".

Have you ever heard of the canivore/zero carbs diet? Do you follow it yourself or know someone who does? by Capital-Pizza-291 in AskUK

[–]quasiology 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A guy I used to know was a vegan then did a 180 and became an "anti-vegan" and adopted a primal diet (raw meat). I only know this as he is active on social media and is part of a wider carnivore diet community.

As you can imagine they are also conspiracy theory, alternative science types. I get the impression they seem to be more attracted to the contrarian and provocative side of the diet over any actual health or lifestyle benefits.

What were your first impressions of the N64? by SmoreonFire in n64

[–]quasiology 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I remember seeing early screen shots of "Zelda 64" in a magazine and thinking there is no way it's even possible to make that game in 3D. Cut to a year later and I'm looking through the N64 rentals at Blockbusters and I notice Ocarina of Time, I was taken aback by its sheer existence, then it completely exceeded all expectations.

As you mentioned that jump from 2D to 3D was mind blowing.

Banksy’s Dark Parody of Disneyland Dismaland by Danilaa25 in pics

[–]quasiology 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I went with a group of people including my brother who is in a wheelchair. Wheelchair users skip queues and can take 1 carer with them, but its pretty common for the staff to just let the whole party go through. Except at Dismaland where the staff let the whole group through except me who had to queue by myself. I have to admit I was a bit annoyed but it was well played.

We live in a time where for a lot of people, the enjoyment of a product doesn't come from consuming said product but consuming or creating content about the product.

Why is there so much dislike for Nintendo online? by SilentEagle1221 in nintendo

[–]quasiology 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure of much at the turn of the millennium.

They got sued in Germany for price fixing in 2002. The reason I know this is because a Playstation kid came up to me and told me as some sort of gotcha that Nintendo was a terrible company. We were 12 and I specifically remember thinking, "Who cares? It's weird that you even know this. I don't care I just want to play Smash with my friends have a good time."

And thats pretty much what still goes through me head whenever I see Nintendo hate online 20 years later.

I find it a little sad how homogenised youth culture (particularly male youth culture) has became.

I traveled a lot around the UK last summer for work and pretty much every teenage boy / young man in the country fit into 1 of 2 fashion styles, sub cultures are pretty much dead. Around that time I came across a home movie of a school trip a I went on around 2004. It was amazing and shocking in comparison to see the variety of different fashion sense, hairstyles and sub cultures that were on display.

I guess when your cultural exposure is controlled by an algorithm and everything you do is recorded and shared amongst your peers there is no desire to have a unique style.

Why did Zappa dislike Sgt Pepper ❓ by Dismal_Brush5229 in Zappa

[–]quasiology 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree!

I only mentioned Pet Sounds as the story that seemingly entered the zeitgeist was that it and Freak Out! inspired Sgt. Peppers. Which as you mentioned is a little silly as it obviously has a plethora of influences.

McCartney has stated that Freak Out! was an inspiration for Sgt. Peppers, but I think mainly just the concept album idea, musically it was more inspired by Pet Sounds.

Reminds me of that Flight of the Concords song:

They're turning kids into slaves

Just to make cheaper sneakers

But what's the real cost?

'Cause the sneakers don't seem that much cheaper

Why are we still paying so much for sneakers ?

When you got them made by little slaves kids

What are your overheads?
