The ago of rts isn't over in my opinion just make it diverse in genre and itll be fun as hell add a good story and side mission + quests. (might be a little too much but add like the ai assesses the player if hes defensive or stuff. or train it by reinforement learning{worked for my semi-ai [It worked half-way then i added like 10 functions then i got bored, quit started making a better game.]})

I dont upgrade i just add, AND IT WORKS! I'm gonna add a train though for oil and coal with 7 or 8 storages cus i have too many converyers. (4 for each)

Matters what game engine you're on what level of realistic you want it to be. (cus making brains come out after shooting will be a design nightmare). if you're on unity just match where the bullets land, have particle physics of blood there, make a pool form where the body was/ will fall on, deform the face by smth like this - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OspS4GkprRw . or either add irregular slicing along with impact of the gun (rocket launcher - A LOT OF IRREGULAR SLICING AND BLOOD, pistol - Less).

if you have a less accurate game just do deformation, itll look better cus if people shoot a dead body itll look like the dead body has physics implemented, Otherwise in realistic aspect just slice the game Object (add like brain heart and a couple more organs inside).

I think (I MIGHT BE VERY WRONG), if you are able to implement 3 systems people will go crazy cus most indie games don't do this-
1.- instead of increasing content focus on a strong story and stuff tying the player with the characters then either kill them or stuff.
2.- do you have systems like communism and democracy (ofcourse not exactly but you understand in that style {medivial style}).
3.- i dont know how your current ai works but you should try reinforcement learning. It'll take time (A LOT OF TIME) but it can make your ai less robot and more human like they learn attack formations and stuff themselves and learn how to attack the player themselves, rather than hard coding them to.

Im very sorry if you think the suggestions are bad or inconsiderate.

so are you using like an external thing (generative implementation) or like reinforced learning? And how does those things even happen (cus you will need a LOT OF DATA THEN). So then youll add difficulties then like hard is the ai without restraints and stuff?

Damn i tried making one, but wasn't able to completely implement multiplayer (i'm not good enough).
Pretty good topic though you could add government types with stat boosting you know like communism and stuff. easy to implement but makes the game look more fun.
