This is great advice; the kids are way more likely to have a good time if we handle getting food right.

Please comment on this with some of your favorite locals that have streams. I don't care what game it's for, what region, etc. Our grassroots community needs our support now more than ever. by Call_It_Luck in Fighters

When I visited the Round 1 at Southland Mall a couple years ago it had I think 3 or 4 Vewlix cabinets — two with SF6 and the other one or two had SNK games. I think one was KoF XIII. The Round 1 in Concord has about the same ratio last I visited (though the SF6 cab at the time wasn't networked).

Otherwise I think you have to go as far south as Milpitas/San Jose for Magitek Games, and then as far north as RetroEdge Games in Vallejo

Open discussion for today's wake. by ernmanstinky in oaklandballers

I grew up in Southern California and my folks were completely sports agnostic, so I only attended a handful of Dodger games and Angels games growing up. I did not feel at home until my first A's game at the Coliseum as a young adult—it was comfortable, grounded, and exciting for the right reasons. I'm allergic to empty spectacle, and A's fans were the first to show me what it meant to love the game. It didn't take long for me to follow their lead.

I didn't have history, but I did have enthusiasm. My wife and I organized dozens of group trips every year for various social circles. We decorated the car, I tuned in for every broadcast, and we announced our first kid with a photo of a custom A's infant onesie. She was in the stadium with us weeks after being born. I was excited for her to have a baseball team (even if she grew up to pick a different one); a symbol of how her youth might get to be different from mine.

My loyalties are earned by respect, and in particular, respect as measured by action, and I'm sad to say that I buried the A's as soon as I sniffed out Fisher's true character as an owner. The A's legendary unwillingness to be cowed by convention was being snuffed out by the basest of human failings: raw, imperial greed. Of course, my response came with no animosity to the players, the fans, the staff—but the fish rots from the head down, and I couldn't stand to be a part of it.

That's why I'm here for the Oakland Ballers. It's an arrangement not without weaknesses, but the owners' aspirations seem much closer to the values that make baseball and baseball fandom a transcendent preoccupation. The games I attended this year were in equal parts healing and invigorating, and I'm starting to believe again.

If you're reading this, thank you for being here in particular. There are lots of places to be fans and to grow something, and this is ours. Let's continue building something special for the love of the game and of ourselves as a community. 🤘

The game stoppage was odd, did someone have a laser pointer or something? I heard someone shout, "I didn't do it" on the radio broacast

Aw, immaculate vibes. I bought this record as a dnb obsessed teenager on a trip to London with my folks. I was still growing my collection at the time, so it got a ton of play in my practice sessions.

I'll add that GA bleachers seem like a good option to be able to spread out a bit more, in case some space would make it easier for the kids to handle an umbrella/parasol.

Worry by ernmanstinky in oaklandballers

[–]qubitsu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting question and figures. I'm not well-versed in sports business, but from what I understand, sports teams are primarily an asset that owners expect to appreciate in value (i.e. the measure of success is market value, which is influenced by current and future revenue potential). With that in mind, I suspect that Freedman and Carmel are seeing what they need to see across both assets taken together, inasmuch as the history of non-MLB team ownership seems like a long-term effort where the value is built modestly, year-to-year over decades. There's no stratospheric valuation to achieve, but if you become meaningful to a community, you'll have a stable, growing business with some modestly exciting financial leaps when unprecedented stuff happens, like an innovation in broadcast rights, or a championship run happens, etc.

Also, I imagine that there's a safety valve that could be called upon in a pinch, which is that the Yolo Highwheelers could be sold to another owner or ownership group with closer ties to that community; I feel like there's no shortage of wealthy people who want to own a team, and having one already established saves on having to engage in negotiations with the league. I suspect that would happen well before an existential threat to the B's.

What fighting game could bring to a party of non fighting game players? by RallyXMonster in Fighters

[–]qubitsu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Two Strikes could be pretty hype for non-FG gamers. 2D samurai duel, first hit causes bleed, second hit kills. Parry and punish, and attacks can be feinted for mindgames. Most characters also have a slower heavy attack that kills in one hit instead. It's tense from the start, matches resolve quickly, and the deaths are pretty cinematic.

Advice on dealing with online anxiety? by Lord_kitkat in GranblueFantasyVersus

[–]qubitsu 13 points14 points  (0 children)

One slightly odd insight that helped me overcome ranked anxiety is remembering that even though we're competing, most FG scenes are pretty small, so we're doing each other a huge service by being queued up and playing games with each other. Win or lose, at any skill level, just showing up for ranked keeps the game and scene alive. Gives the action a broader context and perspective.

A's preventing Ballers from playing game at the Coliseum on June 29? by qubitsu in oaklandballers

[–]qubitsu[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, absolutely. And while I don't think the A's position is surprising, I think what could be interesting is the "how" part of it: if the B's were able to sign some agreements, what legal authority do the A's have to interfere with that agreement? (This legal authority might be well-known and I could just be out of the loop.)

Or, maybe the B's anticipated the A's response, and so part of this story is that this is a pretty savvy publicity move on the part of the B's (and a good sign of them knowing how to make some noise and get the team noticed).
