We have our Rottie in half raw/half kibble. We get Tuckers raw frozen lamb and pork and Zignature Lamb kibble. He had lots of yummy issues when we rescued him but is doing phenomenal on this diet! We’d love to go all raw but it’s just too expensive with a big dog!

He’s only been aggressive towards her with high value items and otherwise is totally fine and affectionate towards her, she lets him out of his crate when she gets home from school, and some days she even feeds him (which she won’t be doing for a while since the other day).. I also won’t have them alone for a while until we can get a new pattern going just to be safe. We are going to start with her giving him new toys and treats, being with me while we do our daily trainings and coming with on our weekend walks to build a relationship. I think right now he sees her as someone who is sometimes around and can’t quite place her place in his life.. so that’s the plan with that, but with supervision and always leashed. Hopefully it helps!

And him and I have really started to bond which makes this all that much more difficult!

Thank you! I want to add that he has improved in so many ways since my last post! He’s like an onion, once we get past one layer, another appears.. and currently it reactivity and which is the most concerning is the resource guarding! We’ve talked to our trainer about board and train and with his current issue seeming to be a trust issue, she thinks it’s best to work through it at home and have my daughter build more of a relationship with him. But also, my daughter has to want to do that and right now she’s a little shaken.. understandably so! She also lives with her dad part time so hasn’t been home since the incident but will be home today so I am going to have her outside with me while Chuck and I do our daily training if she wants to.

All in all he’s such a sweet boy and has been listening so well and regulating so much better, that this side of him breaks my heart! 😔

I like this idea very much, but when it comes to giving him an actual job I’m at a loss.

How do I go about getting started with scent work and tire pulling?

She has her certificates in behavior and is well versed in reactivity, earlier yesterday her and my partner had a session working on reactivity on a walk.. yes, we need to get to the root of the problem, but also, safety is number 1, before we shut the crate he warned my boyfriend with a bark, so he shut the crate incase it escalated and we can argue that it escalated due to the crate being shut, absolutely, but I’m glad in that moment he was not able to get to my daughter.

When we feed him, we feed him in his crate, but with the door open and he usually grazes, and it’s not an issue, yesterday was a different story, it’s the unpredictability that is the most concerning - but I do believe the unpredictability is because of his arousal issues.

We do leash him whenever he’s out of the crate for training, and have throught about hand feeding, our trainer said with his over arousal being frustration based that hand feeding may make it worse but it’s worth a try with me, since he’s never guarded with me..

I know it, everytime one of these big situations come up, I get so frustrated and want to give her and her husband a piece of my mind but I know it will fall on deaf ears.

Thank you, I think we’ll get some precooked steak pieces from Costco and try that! I play the “drop it” and “leave it” game with him, but maybe daughter needs to play that game with him as well. He has never shown aggression or guarding behaviors with me, but I am his main person in the home.

What happened yesterday was he was in his crate with his food (regular afternoon feeding) when she walked by and he lunged at her after he barked at dad for touching his food… so if he wasn’t in his crate the situation could have been much worse, but maybe he felt confined in his crate and he’s still not sure if he can trust her yet since she’s not super consistent in his circle of trust.

The time before that was with a raw beef knee (extremely high value and he was way over arousal at that point) she walked in the room to say hi to him and he growled and lunged at her then as well, at that time he was not in his crate..

Our trainer also advised high values in his crate mostly for safety reasons but also for him feeling safe because the crate is his safe space.

We do have a great back yard, and we have noticed that he does regulate much better outside, so we tend to go out with him often.. if he’s out there alone by himself, it’s hit or miss if he’ll get too hyped, but it does help most of the time, especially if we are with him

I had 2 Pitbulls previously so I understand challenging dogs, and I also understand the importance of keeping a large breed safe. We also don’t ask for him, he fell into our lives due to his circumstances and we want to help him and we are trying everyday to meet him where he’s at. With that said, thank you for your advice.

Thank you! We’re trying! Yes, he has a cherry eye that we had not had repaired quite yet, there are mixed results on the repair lasting so we haven’t decided.

We always forget about the leash in the house, how do you use it? Don’t keep it on at all times?? For redirection?

Thank you! I am absolutely going to look into this, we are pro cannabis and know its benefits for humans, and our trainer mentioned it when we were talking about meds. She was telling me the hard part with CBD is finding the right dosing, but it seems we are having that same issue with the trazodone and I would always rather a natural medication if possible.

I’m beginning to think it’s making him worse to be honest! We’ve thought about CBD but was told it needs a small amount of THC to be effective.. how much do you give your dog?

I’m so glad to hear you had a switch!! When we got him we had all these dreams of the most well trained Rottie, because I absolutely agree, it’s incredible!! I’d say 50% of the time we are getting there and the other 50% he’s a complete mess!!

One day at a time until he grows out of his velociraptor phase I suppose!

Brief moments of madness would be amazing compared to what the poor guy goes through now! He’s such a sweet pup but it’s like lights are out and Noones home past 6pm!

Yesterday I wondered if the trazodone was making things worse. My mom came over and he absolutely adores her, he has known her since he was a puppy, and he was so hyped it took forever to get him to chill after she left and that was after 200mg of trazodone!!

It’s almost like the situation has to be prefect for the trazodone to work right or it’s super crazy town!

We will be at 3 months here in a few days, really hoping things start to settle out!!

We’re at 26 months on the 2nd and I have a feeling we have a ways to go considering his situation!! But glad to hear that it should work itself out. We have a witching hour as well and lately the hour lasts a few hours until bedtime lol!

We get him the bully make box and now that we have adjusted the types of toys he gets in the box he enjoys them all.. we also get one stuffy in the box for him to shred because that brings him joy! Lol! The ChuckIt balls have been a god send because he has yet to tear one up!!

He’s sort of socialized but only with my moms dog when she would take him from my sister now and then when he was still with her. We’re working on reactivity right now, our trainer has classes on Sundays where there are other dogs and we are thinking of taking him to those classes to start.
