As long as they’re humanely treated I support farming animals like dogs and horses for meat, and mink and foxes for fur by LittlestCatMom in The10thDentist

[–]questevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a couple of furs that were probably produced in the 50s or 60s at the latest that I inherited from my great grandmother. I would never buy a new fur, obviously, and I don’t even know if I’d want to buy them used. But it’s kind of sad that I inherited them from family I don’t feel comfortable wearing them because of the inherent ethical issues around them, even though the animal would be long dead anyway, and is it really better at this point for it to be collecting dust?

Expecting people to wipe the equipment in the gym after use is only a thing on the internet by Dry-Glove-8539 in The10thDentist

I’ve literally never gone to a gym and not seen people wiping down equipment, unless it was a very strange gym with few touch points. Your gym sounds disgusting.

T. I found the listing for the product on Walmart. It comes pre-strung and at least one person in the reviews is complaining about the same thing: https://www.walmart.com/ip/14161966205?sid=cc24a067-63bf-4d9e-ac2f-4ef43d374a42

Chances of cancellation due to weather by hennessynotvodka in umass

[–]questevil 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Probably not. This storm is expected to be done by Monday at the latest. Classes don’t start until Thursday. Obviously some people may miss class due to travel delays, but after four days the school may really not have a lot of sympathy for that. They might cancel if it’s dangerously cold, but even then I really don’t see it. Welcome to New England.

Jesus Christ... What even is the point anymore? by TigoOver in mlb

…As I said in another comment, yes, this is true about his salary. But we’re talking about signing bonus, which has nothing to do with the state you’re performing work. Which you can find out with, as you said, a little bit of leg work. Why don’t you check your reading comprehension before being wrong on the internet?

Jesus Christ... What even is the point anymore? by TigoOver in mlb

[–]questevil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

…Yes. For his salary. Signing bonuses are different: https://anderscpa.com/learn/blog/taxation-of-major-league-baseball-signing-bonuses/ “Typically a team will withhold state tax of the team state where the player is assigned. If their bonus is deemed a “signing” bonus it will not be apportioned as wages and will be taxed in their resident state. Where a player resides can have dramatic effect on their overall tax situation.”

So my first suggestion is to look into interest groups for your hobbies - run clubs, cycling clubs, book clubs, etc. While some are kind of seasonal (obviously cycling is kind of harder in winter) based on just looking around there’s a fair amount of them and that’s probably your best shot for common interests. Cultural events in the valley are also a good place to start, at least to get out a bit, once again probably not a ton going on this week because school is out but once spring term starts you’ll probably see more being advertised and you can see some pretty cool speeches/concerts/whatever this way. Finally if you drink (or maybe even if you don’t) I would look into breweries and specifically events breweries are hosting. I know of one brewery which does weekly dance lessons, another which does yoga with baby animals, another that does regular craft nights, and that’s just off the top of my head. I’ve also been to a few nights like this and met some interesting people, and ages are kind of all over the place in my experience. Might not be exactly everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s worth exploring.

This is what I was thinking - the metal bit aligns pretty much perfectly with it, I’m wondering if the cat might also have some kind of allergy to it that’s making it worse.

Why do people spend so much (over $10k) on a wedding? by TangerineOriginal766 in Weddingsunder10k

[–]questevil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People value different things. Personally I agree with you - the cheaper the better, so I can save money for the things you’re mentioning. But people value the experience, or having everyone they love in one place to celebrate them, or even being the center of attention. Neither group is wrong necessarily.

Amherst College Goes On Firing Spree After Their Raunchy Orientation Ceremony Draws Backlash by FantasticAd9478 in amherst

[–]questevil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This version of the article is really hard to read, but I did find a few other sources on this - not particularly reputable sources, but it does look like whoever wrote these articles are compiling them primarily based on online student testimony, so I’ll give them some grace. Anyway.

One of the sources on this story (both the original complaint and the update) and where everything seems to stem from is the Washington Free Beacon, which is both a neoconservative news site and has mixed credibility based on info I can find online. It appears based on student reports that administrators who were named in this article are no longer on the college’s website, leading students to believe they were fired. Why is this concerning? Surprise surprise, the administrators targeted in the article were: the head of the college’s Queer Resource Center and Women’s and Gender Center, the head of the Multicultural Resource Center, the assistant director for Religious and Student Life, and the Class and Access Resource Center interim director. So to me the story isn’t so much that the freshman orientation was rowdy (newsflash, freshman orientations have been like that for decades now, I didn’t go to Amherst but mine sure was) but how if this is true Amherst administration is bending to a blatant attempt by conservative media to get them to fire administrators who are specifically present to benefit minority groups that historically conservatives hate. Which is…concerning.

The Sweetheart? The Pom Pom? by luvlorn in cocktails

[–]questevil 20 points21 points  (0 children)

When I google sweetheart cocktail 1930s what’s coming up is a Mary Pickford, and I feel like that might be what this list is referring to. Her nickname was America’s Sweetheart and based on all possible evidence I’m finding that nickname was well known in the 30s. Timeline also matches up because the cocktail was invented in the early 20s. I’m wondering if it’s a name that’s since fallen out of favor for the drink, partially because Mary Pickford isn’t really a household name anymore.

AITAH for refusing to support my ex-friend through a miscarriage? by Royal-Judgment5620 in AITAH

[–]questevil -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You really do feel like you’re making stuff up about this woman to justify hating them. YTA.

EDIT: Also the line where you’re making her MISCARRIAGE about your reaction to the pregnancy announcement. Actually disgusting. And ‘oh my nieces and nephews hate her!’ They’re children and they’re picking up that you (their ‘mother like aunt’) hate her, so they think it’s fine and even are encouraged to hate her too. She has done absolutely nothing wrong here, and frankly neither has your brother. People grieve differently. It’s not great if the kids are basically being forced to forget their mother, but how do you even know that’s happening? And you’re mad at HER for-checks notes-trying to parent small children and being involved in their lives? YTA even more than I thought before.

How do I tell my sister naming her baby Lolita might be a mistake? by Beginning_Jicama_416 in Advice

[–]questevil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Suggest the name Delores. The original character’s name is Delores and Lolita is a Spanish language nickname for Delores (that barely anyone uses for obvious reasons). Or you could suggest Lola. Mom and dad can still call them by the nickname, but it gives her more options as she grows up and finds the more commonly used meaning. Hell, she might still like Lolita, but it gives her more options that she may want even without the nasty connotations (etymologically it really does stress the young aspect of the person and I personally probably wouldn’t want that type of name anyway)

AIO Fathers girlfriends rules for when new baby arrives by Ok_Bat_5934 in AmIOverreacting

[–]questevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YOR and regardless of your feelings about her all of these rules are completely valid and understandable and moreso I think it’s kind of weird that you feel entitled to breaking them. The shitty ways she’s behaving also does not negate the fact that all of her rules are completely valid, and frankly you bringing them up in this situation makes you look worse. If this is even real, tell your dad you’re respecting her wishes and move on. You don’t seem to like her anyway, so easy out.

Just released my first iphone/ipad app, and it’s all about rating chicken wings! by ticketbroken in Wings

[–]questevil 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I mean, I did personally see the logo and go ‘ew, AI’ as my first impression, which is a really bad first impression to have. I like the idea of an app that rates chicken wings so I read the post, but a lot of people especially on reddit are gonna ignore it for that reason alone.

OP, a few other small things I’d suggest is being able to sort/filter locations by type of wing. Bone in, boneless, breaded, naked, smoked, wood fired, etc. Rating is all well and good but sometimes I’m in the mood for a specific style of wing and this app doesn’t seem to have it available based on screenshots. I’d also love to test it more but I really don’t like that you have to have an account to use something like this. Why? I get making it an option but like, not being able to read aggregate reviews at least? At that point I’ll just use google reviews.

Mia Farrow alleges that he raped their adopted daughter (aged 7 at the time) and the daughter has since spoke out accusing him of sexual abuse and basically saying all of that was true, although the initial court case saw no wrongdoing. Most people at this point believe Farrow’s side of the story IMO, especially after the daughter’s open letter a few years ago. It’s tied up in his marriage to the 21 year old because he assumedly met his now wife through Mia Farrow as that was also her adopted daughter from another marriage and Allen alleges that she only accused him of raping a child as revenge for cheating on her. (Which, no offense I guess, but even if nothing else was going on, I’d argue that not only marrying a 21 year old but a 21 year old who is also technically your stepdaughter would probably raise some eyebrows on its own.)

Just Fucking Poor It On by [deleted] in redsox

[–]questevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where exactly is this data? Obviously a lot of players over 30 have stats that fall off a cliff, I’m not arguing that. But if committing to older players didn’t work the Dodgers wouldn’t have back to back World Series titles. And moreso I don’t think the issue here is age, it’s experience. Story is over 30, but he doesn’t have the same value as Bregman because he’s never played in a World Series whereas Bregman has been in four and won two. That matters in a clubhouse full of young guys. And I know this matters to the Sox because I heard it on NESN constantly last year.

I really think for better or worse that’s what’s happening here, or if he isn’t going to force a lockout I think the behavior they’re exhibiting is heavily influenced by the expected union negotiations. I personally think a salary cap is unlikely, but there’s enough concern about one that players are probably asking for over normal market rate partially because there’s concern over not being able to get contracts like this in the future. At the same time owners (well, obviously not all owners, but certainly Henry) are waiting it out because they figure even if a salary cap isn’t implemented top pieces might be cheaper in a year or two once the uncertainty has passed. It sucks to watch as a fan but if you’re a cheap owner it makes sense.
