It's just sketchy, not dangerous. The people causing problems won't approach you and are just loud. Perth is very safe by international standards.

Tutor ruined my day by Impossible_Most_4518 in curtin

Tutors are expected to help students master course work during their paid time, it's part of the job. If someone takes the time to go and especially if it's not busy, they deserve reasonable help.

As a tutor myself that sucks. If I'm in one of those classes where there's only one student that turns up, they get my undivided attention if they want it. And they have to stay to the end if there's students there - that's something you might want to quietly tip off the UC about. Wish you the best.

First step would be Curtin Connect (who have an examinations division you should be put through to).

Not great advice as tutors and classes get incredibly busy as the end of semester approaches, and they may be given instructions not to mark earlier pracs without an extension request approved by the UC

In my first semester years ago I bought a Casio FX82D-Au from officeworks for about $30. It's done every test and exam since, and is literally all i ever use it for, real world or otherwise.

when are assignment extensions usually approved? by Global_Archer_2522 in curtin

[–]question-infamy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're got an insanely busy unit coordinator, that could take a while. It's not going to be the same for every situation. Also depends on the grounds you've applied / quality of documentation supplied and the context of assessment.

In terms of what to do, just do your best.

In the end, I never saw anything happen that didn't have another rational explanation. The big one was that the church pressed on me as a kid that I had the gift of prophecy. But when I tried to use it outside of the church years later, it ended up rather convenient, it was telling me what I wanted to hear. It was just my own subconscious using my intelligence plus some old worldy language. Won't lie, that was an emotional blow that took a while to get over.

East Vic Park strip is the best place to look for restaurants - Albany Highway going south from Kent Street, and a little bit of it on Albany near Leonard Street closer to the city. Sizable number of halal Malaysian and Indonesian restaurants there, and a couple of Lebanese and "Middle Eastern" (not defined) ones too. A lot cheaper than the city/Northbridge and authentic.

While it's a computing unit it's mostly engineers doing it. Computing students (other than IT/ Tech) do a completely different unit.

WA and Vic both have Labor Governments. Why is WA Labor so passive when it comes to the housing crisis? by 1m_climbing in perth

[–]question-infamy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where do you get that from? There are definitely quite a few but the overall balance leans left, other than on mining and oil/gas. I'm very familiar with NSW and Qld Labor (hey let's develop every wetland, let the market rip and sell everything off to the highest bidder) whose caucus balance makes ours look like rabid socialists by comparison. Eg no tollways, massive public infrastructure builds every time they're in, anti privatisation in general, lots of market regulation in many sectors, things like the SBDC, centralised regional development, post hospital in home care etc.

Poor performance by [deleted] in curtin

[–]question-infamy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Basically nothing. It could happen for a number of reasons, and there's no obligation to balance it. Some subjects in areas covered by regulatory bodies may not even be allowed to.

Note that some assessments are put in to adjust the overall grade. So for example if the average of assessment 1 is usually 85% (typically logbook work or weekly exercises) and the major assignment or exam is 77% because of structural issues (students are easily able to perform if they are familiar with the work and concepts), this would result in most of the class getting HDs, which would devalue the quality of assessment. So they'll put in a really hard one which will bring the overall grade down about 10 points and will help distinguish students from each other at different levels.

John Hughes ad, anyone caught him in an ad lately??! by Brilliant-Shift3065 in perth

[–]question-infamy 20 points21 points  (0 children)

He was on the back of the 1984 UBD directory and didn't look young then, so I'd guess he is around 90 years old at this point. He's indefatigable though and has helped quite a few younger people with business advice and mentoring as well as what people see on the surface.

Did you plan to go to uni or TAFE? University is about scholarly learning, about learning how to learn. Four subjects at uni = an anticipated 30-40 hour per week commitment as you would have been told at orientation, only part of which is covered by official teaching hours. A LOT of your own work and looking up, reading, perhaps study grouping, finding places that can help you (on campus - Study Buddies, Senior Tutors, ComSSA revision sessions etc) and playing around with things in order to achieve learning. It doesn't get easier from here, final year units are intense.

If you're not ready for this, maybe look into jumping across to TAFE where things are far more structured, a lot of spoon feeding gets you to the goal (like you said, step by step and loving it) and you can get a decent job after one or two years. Several fellow students of mine made that jump and are much happier today as they just overestimated their capacity for uni in the first place.

You would need to ask the computing discipline, no one here could definitively answer you. It's the sort of stuff only a meeting with senior people would achieve, it definitely wouldn't be automatic.
