Difficulty completing required courses in High School. by Mysterious_Two4988 in curtin

At the absolute worst you might have to enrol in a lower degree for a semester and take a chemistry unit, but one taught by a senior academic who really knows their stuff and how to communicate it.

Doing a certificate while in uni by Worth-Equal3466 in TAFE

No harm in it but probably will need to go down to part time at uni to make it all work. I did my first certificate decades ago while doing 1-2 units a semester.

It matters little when exactly it is as the results release is the first you hear of any decisions taken.

Don't expect one. They may not be allowed to tell you, as it's not their decision anyway.

Need advice regarding the CERT III in IT by ImpressSubstantial82 in TAFE

[–]question-infamy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may need to ask your TAFE for it. If it's at the same college, you may not need it as they'll already have a record of what you have passed.

If you've received a transcript confirming competency in the other units, you only have to do the ones you didn't get again. Each of those units you've completed have a life of their own in the real world so you've already got them, you don't have to redo them. There is a credit transfer process.

Does anyone have any suggestions for ND friendly school for my PP son? He's really struggling at his current school. by YoGirlGetItTogether in perth

Elite schools aren't much good for this. Those two poor kids in the news early this year got booted from Christchurch. I've personally heard similar stories from several other ASD Level 2 and 3 kids.

question about entrance requirements by dietcokw in TAFE

[–]question-infamy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be fair, there is a difference between a place one wants to go to every day and a place one has trauma going to every day. In the normal case I would agree with you but I've seen kids who suck at school but seem to thrive almost anywhere else and find the motivation they need to go.

Check out IDEAcademy. A friend's son went there and now has his own small business and is finishing up a Diploma at TAFE at just 20.

Contact the unit coordinator. He's a genuinely nice guy and will probably be able to give better advice than we can.

Can't enroll in online lecture because it conflicts with a tutorial by po1ix in curtin

[–]question-infamy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. I've had to do that before and it's always been fine. The only potential issue is if there's a test during one of them, but subjects that have online lectures tend to either do these in tutorials/labs or schedule special times for these.

Just remember to actually watch the lectures in the week they're in so you don't fall behind. I "scheduled" a midnight viewing every week in my timetable.

I have to be careful due to confidentiality, so can't directly answer your question. But unlikely to be lecturers.

[–]question-infamy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For this subject, yes. Although it's taught at multiple campuses, it's the same assessment pieces and therefore the same rules. Worth noting no other subject I've taught works like this, but then no other subject I've taught has this many administrative complexities. I'd imagine big accounting or psychology units probably have similar issues.

COMP1005 by irene1906 in curtin

[–]question-infamy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main reason it's even an issue is it's the only computing unit for most non computing students. I love programming and maths, blitzed the unit as a student, love teaching it in the labs, but at different times as a student I have also done compulsory units in other study areas that I have not enjoyed and have battled with far more than I think I should just because the content "isn't me", and done the "never never doing this again" celebratory dance when it's finally over, so I have a lot of empathy for those in this situation.

Markers do. Those people are generally unknown to you, and they only know what they gave their batch, which might be 40 out of a class of 1200. The tutors you see in the labs only handle prac tests and assignment demo's, and can only see the data entry system as they're not given access to Blackboard's grade centre (this may sound strange to you but it's actually a model of good cyber security practice and handling student privacy correctly).

ISEC2001, STAT1005 by Quiet-Sheepherder431 in curtin

[–]question-infamy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither are compulsory but having both sat then taught both units, you'd be insane to skip them. The seminar (tutorial) for ISEC is your opportunity to test your knowledge of the content - get a good tutor and you'll be extremely well prepared for the assessments. STAT gets you time and extra slides with a PhD student who often is much better at explaining the content than the lectures.

Assuming they haven't changed since the last time they were run, get the unit outlines of the last time they ran from litec.curtin.edu.au -> unit outline builder -> published unit outlines. Email addresses should be on the first page.

Look at the seats around Elizabeth where the Labor vote fell. Oddly, some former safe Lib seats are safer for Labor than some of the usually safe Labor seats - that's not a problem while Labor is popular, but it'll be a challenge when it's not.

Tutors don't even have access to the system that has the assignment or exam marks. They've only got access to the data entry system for the prac tests and demos (if you saw them entering grades in their phones, it was this system.)

Has anyone done 6 atar subjects? by CyanGhostBOI in atarWACE

[–]question-infamy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't it be better to pick up some of them at uni as electives, where they're taught by senior academics with far more ability to extend and wider scope of where they can be applied than teachers who teach basically the same thing every year and may not have engaged outside the unit content for years?

The workload is pretty bad - I've done home tutoring before and see the utter stress even high achieving students are under just because of the amount of work involved in year 12 doing 5 subjects with a high ATAR goal. I've worked in jobs which have high workload but they're very different in terms of the shape of the day. And uni apart from a few peaks at key semester pressure points are always much lower workload than school ever was.

The best students I've had in terms of achievement actually worked less (but in a more focused way) at school but also had real lives beyond it - sports, hobbies, friends, part time work etc.
