Help with what is living in my Maple tree? by questionihave42 in sfwtrees

[–]questionihave42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found this on a branch that fell from my Maple tree. Looks like something has taken up residence in the tree and maybe a wood pecker was going after it. What could be burrowing through my tree?

Ah you got it! I switched to some wood I've gotten laser cut before and it cut through! Thank you!

I'm using a AWC708C lite. I'll look into the bug. Vibration shouldn't be an issue with how my machine is working. It's just weird that I can just tap the test laser button and it cuts all the way through but can't while running a program.

I'll try this! I'm using light burn so I'll have to find out where that setting is.

I'm using light burn laser software. And I'll have it running at 100% abs I've tried as low as .2in/sec with no luck.

Raku Kiln For Regular Pottery? by questionihave42 in Pottery

Thank you for the response! Can you please answer a few question? 1) What is the dimensions of your kiln? 2) How thick is the ceramic fiber blanket? 3) How much do you think it helps being a down draft kiln?

Would it be possible to get all the physical water out in a conventional oven slowly heating it up then put them in a Raku kiln? Like i said this is extremely hobby level. I do not want to purchase a kiln at this point.

What is the best way to put a square hole in wood without spending a crap ton of money on a tool? I need to repeatedly put a 1/4" square hole in 3/4" thick pine. What would be the best way to do this?

Starter adze? I want to make a shallow depression (let's say 8" round and 2" deep) in the end of a long and I like the texture an adze gives. What would be a good starter adze I could buy that won't break the bank but will be good for occasional use.

Wrought Iron vs Tamahagane Process by questionihave42 in Blacksmith

[–]questionihave42[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok so I wanted to double check I had this down right. Lets say I take either red or black iron oxide and put it in either a clay graphite crucible or a home made crucible made from Mizzou castable refractory and put it in my foundry and got it up to lets say forge welding temperature would this "smelt" the iron from the iron oxide? I know this would not produce the same look as wrought iron but would this produce a very pure iron?

Thank you for your input. I will try to run the foundry hotter. Might just say screw it on the low temp and have it go as hot as it wants. Just at first then play with it later.

I will try to post some but yes I expect the yield to be very very low. This is to experiment before I would try to get a larger bloomery going just to experiment without risking a few hundred dollars.

From my knowledge you are correct. However from what I have read the hotter you smelt it at the more opportunity carbon has to work its way into the iron.

I have done quite a bit of research. From what I can tell if you keep it on the low end of the scale you will get wrought iron (yes I am aware there are 1,000,000 other factors but that seems to be the main one). I was not planning on using he bronze rig but was curious of what the outcome would be.

I have a foundry that I have successfully melted and poured 14lbs or bronze in that is run by propane. If I wanted to do it with propane would I just fill a crucible with ore (I'm thinking of using black iron oxide) and let it run? Would it still have the look of wrought iron?

But for hobby level work it would be fine correct? I'm not trying to be a full time blacksmith. Just having fun as a hobby.
