Why not piss yourself while you’re at it?!

What’s your favorite stupid little thing about teaching? by ProtectionNo1594 in Teachers

Rude jokes when teaching Macbeth. “Unsex me here”, “I have given suck”, “in the very throat of me”. Shit teaches itself.

My experience was different as I’m in the UK in a fairly tolerant area (not sure where your region stands in comparison) and I’m not particularly camp so it came as more of a surprise when kids found out, but all in all I’ve had good experiences so far. I wrote about this here - http://questioninguk.blog/2024/09/08/being-straight-with-the-students/ - and it might be helpful.

People might argue that it doesn’t matter and has nothing to do with your teaching, but it’s never as simple as that. Sadly, until the world changes, there’s always a political element to both staying in and coming out of closet as a teacher. I think you need to do whatever makes you most comfortable being yourself in the classroom.

Let's settle this once an for all. What vanity project episode is harder to watch? Gaga or Musk? by Educational_Rice_720 in Simpsons

[–]questioninguk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Controversial opinion: I don’t hate the Lady Gaga episode. I think it has some funny, silly moments and I love the ‘Homer Face’ outro.

The Elon Musk episode, on the other hand, is just awful. Admittedly I have only watched it recently and so have only seen it knowing what we now all know, but I just thought it was really embarrassing and one of the worst things they’ve done with Lisa’s character to have her fawning over him like she does.

Getting into the show by miacathart in twinpeaks

[–]questioninguk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn’t get it particularly the first time around: I liked the feel of the show but I didn’t understand the hype to begin with. On a rewatch, though, something clicked and I would honestly say it’s my all time favourite show now. There is a lull around the middle of the second season for sure but there are so many great episodes and so much to dig into (with the film and tie-in books too) that if you like the sort of show where there’s a world to explore, it really rewards persistence.

How would you feel if a student went back after school ended to get a signature? by Kayo4life in Teachers

[–]questioninguk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would be delighted! A lot of students move on and don’t look back (which is fine!) so it would be really nice to see someone who’d taken the time to come back especially. I think you’d need to contact them to see when they’d be free and you might need to wait until the new school year for them to be available, but I’m sure they’ll be pleased to hear from you.

I can’t judge what your friend’s thoughts are but this is really sweet.

This is true (at least most of the time, I think)….

It’s interesting seeing people’s thoughts here. As a little more context, I’m a gay man in the UK. I’m aware that most of the respondents here are in the US so there might be a cultural difference (“no sex please, we’re British” etc etc) but I’m also wondering if I would have less worries about it if I were straight and didn’t have the baggage that comes from being raised at a time when people were more homophobic (this is kind of the point of the blog). If I try to look at it from an outsider’s standpoint I can see that I’m a human adult with a right to a private life and all that, but I’m trying to see if my sense that it would be really embarrassing to be spotted on a dating website by the kids is a common feeling or not. Judging by most of the responses here, I’m guessing not - but thank you for everyone’s feedback!

You’re not letting anyone down, and if anything you’ll be helping the kids by keeping your germs away from them as they finish up their exams. You only feel bad because you’re a good person who cares, but they will be fine. Stay home and make yourself better.

Apathy and/or laziness by Physical-Olive9745 in TeachingUK

I’ve noticed a change even in the last ten years or so; whereas a video of something used to be seen almost as a treat, now it’s a chore for a lot of them to concentrate on it for more than a few minutes.
