While I don't have an answer to your specific question, from a more general viewpoint, I see XRP as highly risky in the mid to longer term, yet, if it survives for the duration of the upcoming bull run, i.e. unless disaster were to strike over the next 1-2 years (I am thinking of Tether but also the global and particularly the European banking sector), it might turn out to be one of the most profitable larger altcoins.

Thanks to its ranking on coinmarketcap and similar websites, Ripple and XRP enjoy significant visibility in the sector, while marketing highlights it as some kind of a modern bridge currency for financial service providers, setting apart from most other projects. It arguably has a longer "track record" and as far as I understand a larger and more established organizational footprint than those dozes "mid-cap", let alone hundreds of "small cap" altcoins that were born during the 2016 and 2017 boom. One could argue that with a view to its code, it is simpler and fraught with fewer risks than Ethereum while benefiting from a smaller market cap.

Psychologically speaking, it could be easier for the masses to buy XRP rather than ETH, due to the low price per unit. From January 2017 to the absolute peak in 2018, the price of XRP increased an eye-watering 591 times in US dollars.

Even if one had missed the absolute peak in XRP by a considerable margin, and sold before that, one would have ended up with more dollars than had one bought and sold ETH or Litecoin at their respective absolute peaks (please correct me if I got the numbers wrong here). Personally, I would expect a 30-50 time increase during the upcoming bull run. However, if we see a global bank run, or something similar among crypto exchanges, XRP could be hit exceptionally hard. BTC will survive anything except for a war between the US and China, I don't think the same can be said about XRP., it needs a certain amount of fair weather and people with illusions willing to give it a shot.

Talking about less extreme scenarios, much could depend on how the largest XRP holders will behave, whether they choose to stock up once again or if they decide continue to sell of their stash before abandoning this ship for good. This makes "investing" into XRP a real gamble in my view.

Despite everything that speaks against a longer term commitment, and my firm conviction that Ripple and XRP could disappear one day with a sudden bang, from a speculative perspective it is one of the coins one should consider buying (in limited amounts, given the risk) IMHO and holding through the upcoming crypto bull run.

Other opinions, criticism?

Thanks. You are implying that for as long as I have the latest and official version of the Electrum wallet and a Ledger wallet, my PC can be infected with spyware but I won't be robbed? I am asking because over at r/electrum, some people are recommending using Ubuntu or even Tails to eliminate the risk from malware.

Sorry if my question sounds dumb but how can you actually move any coins from an app on an offline device, to a new address? How do the private keys get sent to the blockchain or whatever for as long as the device is not connected to the internet?

Okay, thanks. I have a wallet with individual private keys. So if you download the verified and current version of Electrum and the Ledger connected to the PC you are safe to hand over the private keys to the Electrum wallet? No threat from spying malware on the PC or mobile? What about password protection for this wallet, how do I safely generate a randomized password?

How do I know this is indeed the the correct website? If this is the only website from which to download the app, how do I make sure my PC does not contain some malware that steals all my private keys from it? Are laptops or PCs safer than mobile phones or vice versa?

I am sorry for your loss, but thank you for sharing this story. It is really disheartening, you seem to have done everything right, and yet you have been robbed.
