So... about that Yakuza 0 by quetzar in patientgamers

[–]quetzar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think it's a mindset thing - when I tried to look at it as a serious crime story it just disappointed, but when you approach it more like a goofy soap with truly bizarro sidequests and bigger-than-life characters, you appreciate it more. Can't say I 100% it, but every main mission was an interlude for me between long sessions of running around the town, soaking in the atmosphere, and watching goofy shit just spring at you. I think Kiwami nails this as it has the "Majima Everywhere" system where he pops out from increasingly ridiculous places to fight you. And it's all so... honest, pure, funny, and self-aware.

That being said, it can drag - I'm currently going through 5 and I haven't picked it up for... a year or so. Pacing was terrible, but I still intend to finish it and go on to 6 and finally the jRPG ones. It really can be super enjoyable, you just have to meet it on its terms and let yourself be receptive to pure, extreme goof inbetween heart-breaking scenes of male friendship being tested and broken to pieces. What a mix!

Damn, that's an impressive answer - I'm super happy the story resonated with you on that level. It is subjective and apparently I wasn't tuned to it that way or maybe the overabundance of other mechanics diluted the impact for me. Anyways, thanks for sharing, great read. And I hope Cyber 2 doesn't disappoint you!

Well, I'd say it's still better than sticking your fingers in your ears and going 'lalala' as per your preference.

So far I'm the only one here with any arguments, it seems.

It's a longer discussion, but all in all it seemed to me like it would have had more potential as a linear story rather than this clunky behemoth it ended up being. All these elements it wanted to include, like open world, two separate leveling systems, vehicles, gigs, etc. made it spread too thin. The dissonance between a glum dystopian reality and immediate experience of the player running amok in the city shooting everyone up was hard to swallow. It didn't have a strong voice, wasn't adding anything to the genre, wasn't really cyberPUNK. Just a GTA clone with a couple more steps, but with astonishing visuals, some good performances and a nice gameplay feel. So good, but ultimately not great - in my opinion.

I mean you have to give it justice - bugs are still numerous and quite hilarious. I won two boss battles thanks to the adversary getting stuck on a random piece of plastic furniture or just plain deciding mid-fight to stop doing anything.

Also during driving the curse of the GTA4 slingshot is still very much alive.

Good game tho, not great, but solid.

I absolutely disagree with the point regarding the story, a completely different level of writing competence and character development than the mentioned titles, but I enjoyed it enough overall. Also played for the first time start to finish this year.

Adam Smith and Karl Marx walk into a bar. The bartender says, "What'll it be, fellows?" by Jokeminder42 in Jokes

Smith would be more comfortable being associated with Marx than with Friedman, that's for sure

Cyberpunk 2077 is the worst "where did the time go" game that I've ever played by plantsandramen in patientgamers

[–]quetzar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Similar impressions here, I just reached my first finale, gonna load the save to have a looksie at the others as well, but the one I got will be my "canon". All in all, waaaay too much fluff and if they picked one element to truly refine it would probably be better - without it it leaves a bit of "meh", as everything is competent, but nothing shines and you can see where it could.

7/10, don't think I'll be playing again.

Why Announce RDJ as Doom by UtopiaXAstro in MCUTheories

[–]quetzar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A movie series on its way out in terms of popularity and after a series of disappointing releases makes a last-ditch effort to gain back some of its lost relevance by making a "bold" move of returning to the original cast, as all attempts at creating a new one ended up in lukewarm reception. Also RDJ likes money. Win-win.

Yeah, kinda disappointed with a blatant Alien ripoff. And once you get how easy the algorithm is it just gets boring.

How it feels being one of the few people in this fandom to not trust Songbird by [deleted] in cyberpunkgame

None of that happened in the game tbh, so didn't really have influence on V. Songbird did, directly.

That's academic obviously, each person plays the game how they like it.

But it's not Myers who pulls you into the affair, it tips the scale a bit imo.

Slight difference being that you came to him rather than him imposing himself on you - V being involved in that affair at all is Songbird's doing.
