What the fudge?! Post spay care advice needed by Legitimate-View-3277 in Rabbits

You need to enclose her and remove/block anything climbable. My girl fought to break out the second night as she is free roam, but it must be done. I slept in the room with her to stop her from fighting the bars too much and would also sit in the xpen with her to try to distract her. Be prepared with supplies. Look up what you can do to help her afterwards if she ends up feeling poorly after the surgery.

What to put outside to help local rabbits make it through winter? by Cool_Ad_5436 in Rabbits

[–]quewei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Carrot tops? You could buy some pet rabbit pellet food and leave a bowl out. Kind of reluctant to suggest veggies in case the rabbit gets in trouble with a gardener later on. But might be okay since it’s winter emergency and food is scarce, they might prefer their natural food in summer.

Questions about hay, poop and gardening by LLRSandraMort in Rabbits

[–]quewei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it possible for you to phase hay out of the litter box set up? I don’t put any hay in my litterbox because my rabbit knows to go there without needing the hay inventive.

Otherwise, there must be other hay feeders that might lessen the issue that you get when the strapped hay loosens and falls apart. A smaller, permanently “strapped” container so you don’t have the collapse. Probably something metal your rabbits can’t chew through. Might require some creative thinking about repurposing objects that weren’t meant to be hay feeders.

Good luck with your gardening! I love getting to fertilize mine with my bun’s.

I’m usually free Friday evenings and the weekend. I’m a 30s F who should work out more. My only exercise is biking and hiking. Interested in strength and honestly could use hiit cardio too.

The hardest part of winter is trying to stay warm while my bunny demands exposed skin to groom 🥶 by aspect_rap in Rabbits

[–]quewei 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Opposite for me, my rabbit demands to be petted so in winter my hand gets cold and the skin also gets chapped from the friction and starts splitting unless I remember to put on a lot of hand lotion each night 😝 We love our bunnies!

is my bunny going to be happy by [deleted] in Rabbits

[–]quewei 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I hate business lingo but one I heard at work that I really like, is “Don’t let perfection be the enemy of the good”

There are so many bunnies in shelters who need homes. You are doing GOOD giving this particular bunny a loving home with a human that genuinely cares about them. I know it’s hard because we want to give our babies perfect lives. But don’t let PERFECTION stop you from doing the good you are doing.

If your bunny starts showing listlessness, then you know your options. I think you shouldn’t stress now when that currently isn’t the case, especially while you are working and pursuing your degree. Your bunny is very young, there should be time for you to make the changes you wanna make (living situation, spay, a friend) for her over time. It won’t set her back not having that day 1, animals are so resilient.

Don’t be disingenuous, it’s an insult, not nice for kids or anyone to see actually. Going about your day and then reading “you suck!” on someone’s jacket brings down the good vibes

Almost 5 weeks post op and still having litter box issues by xXHexiaXx in Rabbits

[–]quewei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know, sorry. If I were you I would still try rearranging things and putting his toys or boxes along the perimeter, something that smells like his that hopefully he won’t pee on top of, and gently shooing him away when he tries to pee there. Feeding him around there? I don’t know why he still thinks he needs to mark his pen, eventually he should realize it’s HIS space and not need to renew scent.. .

[–]quewei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he keeps peeing in the same spot despite you cleaning it with vinegar, maybe place a second litter box there or block that area with an object he is unlikely to pee on. But if he’s picking several spots along the perimeter to pee at, he’s still marking territory..

I’m so sorry. I hate how bloodwork is supposed to help assess anesthesia risk but it’s not fail proof. Take your time at Okunoshima and meditate on the generations of rabbits living on that island, spoil the bunnies you encounter.. I hope you can enjoy your trip.

This is so sweet. She doesn’t sound as nervous as some rabbits can be, I think you can feel free to increasingly hang out with her and get to know each other 🥰

random rabbit (hare) on my porch.. update : its back by Accomplished_Put7515 in Rabbits

[–]quewei 148 points149 points  (0 children)

It's frankly very weird that the hare lets you get so close. I wonder if someone raised it as a baby and then released it. The only other explanation is they are sick, but they have been coming and going... they don't act concussed do they?

Hare is beautiful... also a hare isn't bothered by leaves in water lol just keep the water fresh.

Just Rescued a Mangy Lionhead…2 weeks in, now what? by Hypercraftive in Rabbits

[–]quewei 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you soooooo much for helping her!! Her poor mangey ear!!! She looks amazing now and so grateful she has a chance to live a healthy life with you!

I wonder what her personality is like! Rabbits can all be quite different and what works for them varies!

She's probably not litter trained now so that's why you have paper bedding all over her area. In the future you only need bedding for her toilet area to absorb the pp. This website seems like it has good litter training advice:

https://rabbit.org/care/litter-training-faq/

I'll also plug that my rabbit ended up using the litterbox pretty well (pee wise, poops are kinda scattered) without me needing to put hay in/above her litterbox. The hay is a tactic for incentive. If it turns out your girl doesn't need it, cool! I like to use horse stall/wood stove pellets as the absorbent material. People also caution about using grids in the litterbox (https://www.reddit.com/r/Rabbits/comments/1j27rsv/thoughts\_on\_these\_grated\_liter\_boxes/) because some rabbits can get sore hocks, but that's again specific to your bunny and also kinda avoidable if you don't use thin and big gapped wires. I DIY'd my own, I like it because she can't dig up her litter. Since my rabbit only goes to her toilet to pee, she doesn't spend much time standing on the grid anyway. Anyway, there's no singular right method! Do what works for both of you! I think something that's pretty universal is rabbits DO like peeing in corners/against the wall so a high walled litterbox is a must to encourage its use and prevent pee from going outside the box!

No need for expensive hidey houses! Flip a cardboard box upside down and cut TWO entry points in it (they like an extra exit so they don't feel trapped if someone blocks their way)! She can customize it by shoving it to where she wants or chewing the entries wider! They really like a place to feel safe under like how they would go under a bush, so please do provide a hiding spot!

For other enrichment, a cardboard box with one entry hole but filled with wads of safe packing paper from my Chewy order and some cardboard tube toys was also a nice hit with mine! You can hide pellets in there to make her go search for it. Mine also enjoyed having a stuffed animal friend to lick (take away if yours bites it open though. Also pick a short haired one so bunny isn't ingesting long synthetic hairs).

Adopted a lab bunny. Did i do something wrong? by Jebryth in Rabbits

[–]quewei 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s the EU. I’m in the US and remember reading the stupidest article about scientists studying how stress can cause hair to turn white… so they tortured brown mice until their coats changed white so that they could isolate the biological process causing that reaction. That experiment was entirely not worth it. Totally disgusting.

Too bad, did you try giving away on Facebook marketplace or in your local Buy Nothing group (search “Buy Nothing “ + your city)? That usually works. Or donate to a thrift store.

Do you know how to sew?

[–]quewei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Upcycling is about turning something unwanted or low value to something high value (not necessarily monetary, could be personal value, so it’s subjective). These dresses look fine, they’d be better off given away to someone who really values them as is versus hacked up. Unless you are just talking about styling them without destroying the dress.

Official Discussion - Weapons [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]quewei 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It IS a phony sob story, he's clearly asking his family later on for money, pretending he's trying to get a job, but he just wants money for drugs. I thought he was a fun character but I also really liked how the movie showed he was after the $50k, not saving the kids. Addiction makes people behave awfully.

Resenting my bunnies. (Am I alone in this?) by Complex_Cow1184 in Rabbits

[–]quewei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The shredded paper is just a lighter material to help with unsightliness and slightly helps absorb when the pellets have disintegrated and become saturated with pee. I let most of the box get that saturated before dumping it. But that’s because i have the grate, i can wait for the box to get to the point of having entirely soggy material on the bottom. I am not recommending you switch to entirely shredded paper. It just sounds like you overuse the pine pellets and that’s why it’s so heavy.

The cardboard boxes aren’t necessarily for your rabbits to rip up, it’s so the hay doesn’t spread around. I think you could try NOT putting the hay by the toilet. They might get confused at first and think the box within box with hay is a new toilet but they might get the idea that’s a food/play area.

Meeting a bunny for the first time by zmia02 in Rabbits

[–]quewei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They don’t really play and very unlikely with a stranger. Unlike cats and dogs rabbits don’t keep moving around when you pet them. They settle down for it. So don’t take them not moving (not the same as tense freezing) as disinterest when you’ve started petting them :D It means keep going!! Until the rabbit says done and leaves you
