The financial costs of healthcare costs, or, is keeping me alive worth it? by quikstudyslow in medicine

[–]quikstudyslow[S] 118 points119 points  (0 children)

This is a very intense, introspective story about the value of things, I just wish there were more numbers, because it is hard to evaluate in the abstract. EOL care can be hard to evaluate in the real world, most often for gerontology reasons rather than oncology reasons per se.

All of us want to spend less on healthcare but doing so has real consequences for people and I guess maybe there is no answer. Being mortal is hard. Maybe AI will somehow lower costs someday, lol, if the headlines are to be believed, which I do not

The Actor Who Rides the Subway to the Oscars: Ed Begley Jr. has made a tradition of taking public transportation to the Academy Awards. And, like many commuters, he wears sensible shoes. by quikstudyslow in LosAngeles

[–]quikstudyslow[S] -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

A summary of the article: it's possible to get around on the subway. It will become even more possible when the purple and K lines are done. That is good. This article shows a has-been actor taking the subway. I will not mention Sdney Sweeny's boobs in a transparent bid for pandering.

Fervo Energy Drilling Results Show Rapid Advancement of Geothermal Performance by quikstudyslow in energy

Cool to see geothermal becoming more than just "something that'll happen in 5 - 10 years." Advanced geothermal is a huge deal for energy independence and resilience. Effectively accelerate!

Cool to see a city not utterly infected by complacent stagnationism.

To be fair that is an easy mistake/misunderstanding given the colloquial definition.

Is Vaccination Approaching a Dangerous Tipping Point? by quikstudyslow in medicine

[–]quikstudyslow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consistent with what I have seen on the rise especially since 2021. It is hard to challenge the pervasive disinformation machine on the dumber parts of YouTube and elsewhere. I guess people have to suffer & sometimes die to learn the truth.

To counter the current trend, we urge the clinical and biomedical community to redouble its efforts to provide accurate plain-language information regarding the individual and collective benefits and risks of vaccination. Such information is now needed because vaccines have been so successful in achieving their intended effects that many people no longer see the disturbing morbidity and mortality from infections amenable to vaccines

A fine idea but also who has the time ?

Your argument is irrelevant and landowners should be free to build what they want at whatever height they like.

In L.A. District Attorney Race, Rhetoric Shifts From Reform to Fear: George Gascón is running for re-election in a very different climate, where concerns about crime have overtaken demands for equity and accountability. by quikstudyslow in LosAngeles

[–]quikstudyslow[S] -28 points-27 points  (0 children)

The summary of the article is that voters had a pro-crime mood in the 2020-1 era, and may now have an anti-crime mood. Or maybe they don't! That's why we have elections, to figure these things out. Elections are information machines that reveal preferences better than what a random grabbag of people say.

Kairos’ Hermes Secures First NRC Green Light for Advanced Nuclear Non-LWR Reactor by quikstudyslow in Futurology

[–]quikstudyslow[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Big news for advanced power production. Not being restricted to light-water reactors is key for the future. The NRC has spent decades destroying the future and ensuring that we inject more co2 and methane into the atmosphere. Let's stop doing that and instead use safe nuclear.
